    RHNEEN PRIMEUR 2009

I can say that without a doubt it is the finest overall vintage in the north since 1999,

INTRODUCTION2009 was a fantastic vintage throughout France and the Rhne valley was no exception. It iswithout doubt a very attractive vintage producing wines of stunning depth, luxurious textureand fine balance. The wines will bring immediate pleasure to those not willing to wait but

will also age gracefully. Most importantly the quality is well spread across the range offeringgreat value for money.

RHNE 2009 VINTAGE REPORTSince 1998 the Rhne Valley has been blessed with a succession of highly rated vintages.Even in this context however the 2009 vintage is an exceptional year. A wet and cold winterfollowed by an equally wet spring ensured that the soils maintained the sufficient levels ofwater needed for the dry summer months that followed. Flowering took place at the end ofMay/beginning of June and was even, promising good yields. Summer was very dry indeedwith very low rainfall. Vines were put under considerable stress, particularly in the Southbut they were saved by a very welcome short rainfall in mid-September. The Mistral, whichblew in at the same time, helped to concentrate the grapes. The warm and stable weatherfrom August through to October gave the growers the rare opportunity to choose when topick their grapes. The best domaines managed to pick early and their wines reveal a greatbalance between the opulent ripe fruit, freshness and the ripe yet prominent structure. Most of the 2009s will be drinking very early but will be capable of medium to long termageing due to the high levels of friendly, mature tannins.

Northern Rhne2009 is one of the most pleasurable vintages to taste young in recent Northern Rhnehistory. Even the most serious cuves are already showing their charm and a great sense of

harmony. Tannins are soft and well integrated, the fruit is opulent and ripe and yet thewines still maintain their freshness and elegance. There is a wonderful sense of terroiracross the Northern Rhne wines. Even adjacent vineyards are displaying great differencesthanks to perfect growing conditions and little intervention from the growers.

The star performers in 2009 have to be Cte Rtie and Hermitage. But this is also a perfectvintage to stock up on good value wines. Our team was amazed by the level of purity andconcentration of fruit along with the fine nature of the tannins present, even at the basiclevel. Most of the wines will drink very early but the intensity of fruit and good structure willensure that they keep very well in the cellar for years to come.

I can say that without a doubt it is the finest overall vintage in the north since 1999, and probablysince 1990. (Robert Parker, Oct 2010)

Southern Rhne2009 for the Southern Rhne is an excellent, early drinking vintage showing benchmarkpower and elegance. Many of our Southern Rhne producers said it was comparable to across between 2000 and 2005. The wines have opulent, ripe fruit, like the 2000s, but this ismarried with the freshness and excellent structure found in the 2005s. The difference wefound was that the 2009 tannins are much finer and riper than in 2005. As a result, thewines can be drunk early but also have great ageing potential.

The yields in the South were severely affected by the very dry summer and most of ourproducers have reported a 30% reduction in yield. Cool nights however ensured good levelsof acidity to balance out the superb density and concentration of fruit. There is also greatvalue to be found in the domaines basic cuves in 2009, from Chteauneuf-du-Pape rightdown to Ctes du Rhne level. We particularly liked the wines from the higher altitude,

chalky soils of Gigondas, which showed an extra level of vibrant energy in fruit and superbfreshness and minerality.

one could argue that 2009 may end up to be nearly as profound as 2007. (Robert parker, Oct2010)

    LA FERME DU MONT

Stphane Vedeau is a dedicated and conscientiousyoung proprietor. He established La Ferme du Mont in

Courthzon, in the southern Rhne, because of theunique terroir that he found there. The soil at La Fermedu Mont has a high mineral content with a noticeablylow PH and the vineyards have an excellent exposure tothe southern sun. As a result the wines produced havean immense concentration and are incredibly well

balanced. Stphane appears intent on making a top-flight reputation for himself. RobertParker seems to think he already has, regularly giving him over 90 points for his wines, as hehas done for this 2009.

    /case In Bond Drinking From

Chteauneuf-du-Pape Ctes Capelan 2009 285 2012Dark opaque fruit infused with vanilla oak and garrigue notes dominate the wonderfully aromatic nose. Thepalate is profound and dense, with layer upon layer of fresh forest fruits, griottes and cherry preserve. Full-bodied and powerful, this wine is still airy and effortless, carried by copious quantities of minerals andfreshness. This must be one of the stars of 2009 vintage. (RP: 93-95, JR: 16.5)
