Agreement Rules

A subject and verb must agree in:• Number (singular to singular; plural to plural)• Gender

STEPS:

1. Determine the subject and whether it’s singular or plural

2. Determine the verb and whether it’s singular or plural

3. Keep the tense the same!

Example

The boy stand in the corner.Subject—boyVerb- stand

Are these singular or plural?Do they agree?*change the verb, not the subject*keep the same tense

Agreement Rules

A pronoun must agree with its antecedent in:• Gender• Number• Antecedent means “comes before”

STEPS

1. Determine the subject or noun. Is it singular or plural? Male? Female? Or Object?

2. Determine whether the pronoun used to refer back to it is the same gender and number.

Example

The boy in the corner has his book with them.

Subject- boy

Verb-has

Pronouns- his, them

Do these agree in gender and number?

Pronoun Types

• Indefinite

Singular--- someone, everyone, everybody, somebody, one, none, neither/nor, either/or, some (if followed by a singular object)

Plural---Some (if followed by a plural object), few, all, many

Singular—myself, himself, herself, oneself

Plural—themselves, ourselves

• Personal

Singular—I, he, she, it, you

Plural—they, we, us, them
