From Fr. JC Maximilian’s Desk “Viaticum, the Last Sacrament of the Christian”
Last week I wrote about the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, and mentioned that a lot of people still call that sacrament “Last Rites” because of a poor translation of the Latin title of the sacrament. Unfortunately this has resulted in many people thinking that they should only call for a priest to
Anoint them when they are dying. The Church teaches that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is for anyone who has a serious illness or injury. The word is gradually getting around, and just in the past few weeks I have had a couple parishioners call me to anoint them before they had surgery. Having said all that there are two rites, which are associated with the Anointing of the Sick, which are “last rites,” for they are given only when death is imminent. The first of these is Viaticum, which is the Last Sacrament of the Christian. Viaticum is the Eucharist, that is received at the moment of “passing over” to the Father. Receiving Holy Communion in this manner has a particular significance and importance. “It is the seed of eternal life and the power of the resurrection, according to the words of the Lord: ‘He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day’ (John 6:54). The sacrament of Christ once dead and now risen, the Eucharist is here the sacrament of passing over from death to life, from this world to the Father” (CCC #1524). Viaticum does not have a particular ritual in and of itself. It is typically done during the celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; after the person is anointed the Lord’s Prayer is said, then the priest gives the person the Eucharist, and after some silent prayer, prays the final prayer and blessing over the dying person. The final “last rite” is what is known as the Apostolic Pardon. Technically this is more associated with the Sacrament of Penance rather than the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The Apostolic Pardon is an indulgence given for the remission of temporal punishment due to sin. The Apostolic Pardon is given by a priest, usually along with Viaticum. Recall what I said about the Temporal punishment due to sin; that if not completed in this life, the person completes it in Purgatory before going to Heaven. It is the “fixing the broken window” that you were forgiven for breaking. It is the final releasing from attachment in this world so that one can cling to God alone in Heaven. The Apostolic Pardon takes all temporal punishment away, so the person who is properly disposed when receiving it, goes right to Heaven. The Apostolic Pardon can only be given to the person once, so it is done when death is extremely imminent. Currently there are two forms of the Apostolic Pardon: “By the authority which the Apostolic See has given me, I grant you a full pardon and the remission of all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit” or “Through the holy mysteries of our redemption, may almighty God release you from all punishments in this life and in the life to come. May He open to you the gates of paradise and welcome you to everlasting joy.”

Resurrection Parish Religious Education Program SOCIALISM – A NEW HELL ON EARTH, by John Horvatt Part I
Americans are generous people. When God blesses us we naturally want to practice charity and help the less fortunate and poor. However, this charitable spirit is now threatened. There are those who wish to destroy the structures from which these material blessings flow. The new hell on earth could be an America without charity. With the increase in socialist politicians in America, this new hell on earth may not be far away. Socialists do not believe in the fundamental concepts on which charities are based. According to Horvatt,” They are natural enemies of private charity, and above all Christian Charity.” Socialists contend that government, rather than charity organizations, should take over responsibility for charity programs. Essentially, socialism leads to a loss of freedom and complete reliance on Government. This has never worked because, for one thing, eventually, there is likely to be a corrupt government that will make decisions based on greed rather than the welfare of the people. Socialist charity is an oxymoron. Most socialists hold that charity is a capitalist structure used to keep the poor downtrodden. Socialist literature is hostile to charity. Ironically, the greater the charity, the greater the hostility since they do not want charity to solve social problems. They want the government to take control. The socialist Patrick Stall writes on radical Jacobin website, “Private charity will never cure capitalism’s ills.” There are three reasons socialists do not like charities. First, their egalitarian ideology demands economic equality above all things. To them, all inequality is unjust. Charity participates that exploits the worker and facilitates inequality and charity. This is why socialists seek state ownership or regulation of the means of production. It is better to overtax the rich and allow the government to redistribute these “ill-
gotten” funds than to allow the rich to give them freely. Second, socialists don’t like charity because it creates receivers of aid. They believe that by accepting gifts from others they are victims of injustice. Socialists do not allow for misfortunes, disasters or personal vices. Thus, socialists believe charity humiliates the poor. They believe the poor must demand the fruits of another’s success as a right not as a gift. Rather than favor a system in which the needy are dependent on the wealthy, even if the benefits the poor receive from the rich are better, socialists prefer to construct huge government programs to distribute equally scarce tax dollars. Third, Socialists hate the idea of charity because it undermines their concept of history as class struggle. Socialists do not want harmony of the social classes but want to pit one class against another as a means of bringing about major social change. Their system presupposes and desires class strife. Normally, the rich and poor live separate lives with little contact between them. Charity unites rich with poor by creating bonds of affection. The rich extend compassion to the poor whom they seek to help. The poor respond with gratitude to those who help them. These rich personal relationships have historically united the social classes that would otherwise be divided. --To Be Continued (next week).

Respect Life As a pro-life people, our hearts ache for the millions of babies lost to abortion. However, little is heard about the tremendous emotional pain, regret and crippling remorse that many women and men experience following an abortion. These parents are also victims of a culture of death. They suffer a traumatic wound, with consequences that can last a lifetime. As a pro-life people, our hearts ache for them, too. Rachel’s Vineyard is a weekend retreat that offers these wounded parents an
opportunity to walk with Christ through the complex circumstances that led to abortion, as well as the devastating aftermath. Rachel's Vineyard also provides a blessed opportunity for parents to begin processing their grief, and to memorialize their children. There is no judgment. There is just an atmosphere of fellowship, compassion, and healing. If an abortion is impacting you, remember that God loves you, just as much as He loves your child. If you would like to experience a weekend of God's love and mercy for yourself, please contact Judy Warenkiewicz at 732-536-6871. All inquiries are strictly confidential. The next Rachel’s Vineyard retreats are: February 28, 2020 – March 1, 2020 and August 28, 2020 –August 30, 2020.
