RETSD PROGRAMMINGADULT LEARNING CENTRESThe division has two adult learning centres that allow the continuation of high school education. The program is designed to suit the adult who wants to upgrade, and credit can be given for prior learning in accordance with provincial guidelines.
ADVANCED EDUCATIONRETSD offers advanced courses and programming for students who are academically talented and motivated. Three of the senior years schools offer Advanced Placement (AP) and one offers International Baccalaureate (IB).
ALTERNATIVE • ACADEMICThere are two programs for senior years students at risk of dropping out of school. These programs help students earn credits and develop the needed skills, knowledge, concepts and attitudes to be successful upon re-entry to a regular senior years school setting
ALTERNATIVE • BEHAVIOURAL
The division has programs and services that provide support for students in alternative settings, as well as in schools. These programs and services are for children and youth who are experiencing behaviour and/or emotional difficulties that prevent them from functioning successfully in a regular classroom setting.
ARTSThe visual and performing arts are an important aspect of programming within RETSD. At the middle years level, band and art are the key option areas; to support choral development, there is a divisional choir. At the senior years level, there are a variety of arts options.
CAREERSThe senior years schools provide information and programming related to career exploration. Guidance is provided to assist students in developing a career focus. These programs involve extensive partnerships with the community, and students are provided with opportunities to become involved in the workplace in meaningful ways.
EARLY LITERACYEnsuring all children become successful readers and writers is a key goal. To support this, early years schools have Reading Recovery™—an early intervention program for Grade 1 students. The division also offers a reading tutor program and a speech-language development program.
INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONRETSD accepts visiting students from around the world for its International Education Program, providing a diverse range of innovative, challenging and internationally accredited academic and technical-vocational programs. All six senior years schools and several of our middle and early years schools provide the opportunity for international students to study at a location specific to their academic needs, interests and aptitudes.
LANGUAGESThree language programs are currently offered in the division:
• French immersion
• English-German bilingual
• English-Ukrainian bilingual
The French immersion program is offered in both dual-track and milieu settings at the early, middle and senior years level. There is also a late French immersion program with a Grade 6 entry point.
The German and Ukrainian bilingual programs provide approximately half a day of instruction in German or Ukrainian with the other half of the day dedicated to English instruction. Typically, mathematics, science and English language arts are taught in the English language.
STUDENT SERVICESThe division provides appropriate educational programming for all students based on a continuum of supports and services and a framework for service delivery. Students with learning, social/emotional, sensory, behavioural, physical, cognitive/intellectual, adaptive, communication and health care needs are supported to reach their academic and social potential. Teachers, resource teachers and counsellors in collaboration with divisional specialists/clinicians develop student-specific plans to meet the student’s learning and behaving needs.
TECHNICAL-VOCATIONALSelect senior years schools within RETSD offer a wide variety of courses and programs in the technical-vocational area to assist students in becoming skilled in the trade of their choice. Programs include autobody, automotive technology, baking and pastry arts, carpentry, culinary arts, electrical, fashion technology, graphic design/advertising arts, hairstyling, metals fabrication, nail technology, photography and refrigeration and air conditioning.

MIDDLE YEARS
SENIOR YEARS
GENERAL INFORMATIONSCHOOL BOUNDARIESStudents may attend the school of their choice, rather than their designated school, subject to the following conditions:
1. There is space available (determined on an annual basis).
2. They provide their own transportation to and from school.
LANGUAGE PROGRAM CATCHMENTS
French ImmersionThe division has designated catchment areas for French immersion programs. If parents want their child to attend a French immersion milieu school when they live in the catchment area of a dual track school, or vice versa, this will be considered as an in-division, out-of-catchment school of choice. Transportation is not provided.
Munroe Junior High School is the designated late French immersion school for the entire division. Transportation is not provided.
English-Ukrainian BilingualBernie Wolfe Community School serves as the catchment school for the Transcona area (K–8), while Springfield Heights School (K–5) and Chief Peguis Junior High (6–8) serve as the catchment schools for the River East area.
English-German BilingualDonwood and Princess Margaret elementary schools, Chief Peguis Junior High and River East Collegiate are the catchment schools in the River East area.
Donwood is the designated school for the Transcona area.
Donwood also serves as the designated school for out-of-division students applying to enter the English-German Bilingual Program through Schools of Choice.
REGISTRATIONStudents moving into the area may register at any time during the school year.
Kindergarten registration begins the first Monday in March for the following September. If children are five years old, on or before December 31, they are eligible to start kindergarten in the fall of that year. Proof of age (e.g., birth certificate) is required at the time of registration.
Early years schools are closed during July and August. School offices are open the week before school begins in order to accommodate new registrations.
Middle and senior years students choose their courses in March and April for the following September. Contact individual schools for information on programs and registration.
Offices in middle and senior years schools are generally open 10 days prior to the beginning of the fall term.
If you are unsure which school your child should attend, you can access the “School Locator” on the division website home page (www.retsd.mb.ca) or on the Registration page where you can also find school registration forms for download. As well, this information may be obtained by calling the RETSD Administration Offices at 204.667.7130.
TRANSPORTATIONAll K–Grade 6 and rural grades 7–12 students who reside more than 1.6 km from their designated school are eligible for transportation.
STUDENT SERVICESRETSD provides a continuum of student supports and services. Professionals specializing in the areas of education, speech language pathology, psychology, social work, reading, occupational therapy and physiotherapy are available in the division. All support services are accessed through your local school.
