REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
HUBERT SELBY jr.
Requiem for a Dream by Hubert Selby Jr. is one of the best books I have ever read.
This book was first published in 1978. The book tells about the fates of four inhabitants of the New York who unable to stand the difference between the dreams of a perfect life and the real world and seek consolation in illusions.
Sarah Goldfarb, who had lost her husband, dreams only of how to get into the TV show and appear in her favorite red
dress. To get into it, she sits on a diet of pills, which change her mind.
Harry Goldfarb, Sara's black sheep of a son, is another main character.
Harry's circle of acquaintances includes his girlfriend Marion, an intelligent, attractive
young girl with a talent for painting but paralyzed with defeatist and self-loathing
feelings.
Harry's best friend is Tyrone C. Love, a young black man who grew up poor in Harlem but would like to escape from the harsh realities
of the street.
They are trying to get rich and get out of life, which surrounds them, selling heroin. Guys
indulge in drugs by themselves too. Life seems to them like a fairy tale, and none of the four is not realize that he had become dependent
of this fairy tale.
Gradually it becomes clear that the protagonist of the novel - Dependence, and the book itself
- the manifest of triumph of depends on human spirit. Requiem for all those who have
betrayed of life for illusion sake and lost a Human in themselves .
I give this book ten out of ten. But I’d highly recommend this book for 17+,
because it contains adult’s themes like usage heroin.
