Reptiles Reptiles have some things in common which make them very different from any of the other vertebrates. The first difference you can notice is with their skin. Reptiles have rough scaly skin. You can see this clearly in the two photographs on this page. Reptiles also lay eggs to produce their young. This is similar to birds for example, but very different to mammals. Combine this with the scaly skin and this makes reptiles unique. Reptiles are cold blooded. This means that they can not control their own body temperature. For them to warm up they need to bask in the sun. Reptiles vary in size, shape and colour, but have all these things in common which makes them very different from the other groups.
