THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

TENNESSEE ANNUAL CONFERENCE

THE BUSINESS OF THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2016

PART II PERTAINING TO ORDAINED AND LICENSED CLERGY

(Note: A (v) notation following a question in this section signifies that the action or election requires a majority vote of the clergy session of the annual conference. If an action requires more than a simple majority, the notation (v 2/3) or (v 3/4) signifies that a two-thirds or three-fourths majority vote is required. Indicate credential of persons in Part II: FD, FE, PD, PE, and AM when requested.) 17. Are all the clergy members of the conference blameless in their life and official

administration (¶¶604.4, 605.6)? The clergy of the Tennessee Conference all serve by the grace of God. The character and

conference relations of all clergy members have been reviewed by Bishop William T. McAlilly, the Cabinet, and the Board of Ordained Ministry. Our clergy are in good standing and their ministries are appreciated. May God forgive us when we sin, strengthen us in our weakness, and perfect us as servants of the gospel.

Bishop McAlilly, members of the BOM and clergy in the TN Conference, I am pleased to share that the Team for the Order of Elders, Order of Deacons, and the Fellowship of Local Pastors and Associate Members has been actively at work this year around our covenantal living together as clergy. We continue to urge our brothers and sisters in ministry to remember that . . . . We have a sacred calling as United Methodist clergy. By virtue of our baptism and ordination or licensing, we have entered into a covenantal relationship in a community of clergy (active and retired Elders, Deacons, Associate Members, Provisional Members, and Local Pastors). Our mutual covenant seeks to create a community marked by and lived into with respect, honesty, integrity, compassion and encouragement. In all interactions with one another we seek to offer mutual support and care as friends in ministry. As clergy in set-apart, representative, accountable leadership ministry, we must continually commit to grow in holiness, in faithfulness to our calling to make disciples of Jesus Christ and in trusting relationships with each other. We rely upon the grace of God to maintain our covenant with each other. (from the Tennessee and Memphis Conferences Clergy Covenant Living) Our primary task over the past year has been to plan the Clergy Sabbath Retreat at Montgomery Bell State Park, April 18 -20. Having heard the desire for more time to rest through evaluations from the 2015 retreat, we planned “The Case for Sabbath – Ministry over the Long Haul” to offer true Sabbath rest with opportunities to worship together as a body along with a couple of plenary sessions with leaders, Billy Vaughn, Lee Ramsey and Bishop Bill McAlilly. Feedback has been positive regarding the many creative Sabbath opportunities offered. We will once again involve interested persons who would like to help with planning for next year’s worship experiences. Put May 7 – 10, 2017, on your calendar for our next gathering to rest and be revived at Montgomery Bell State Park. In an effort to encourage clergy to form and/or join a Covenant Group with colleagues, eight of our clergy brothers and sisters in the TN and Memphis Conferences are in training with Billy Vaughn and Lee Ramsey of the Methodist House of Studies at Memphis Theological Seminary to be Covenant Group leaders. A second class of leaders will be trained this fall. If you are interested, please contact one of the co-chairpersons of the Orders or Fellowship Team to register. There are several reasons to celebrate this year. Nan Zoller will come now to offer a report specifically from the Order of Deacons.

You can’t tell a deacon when you see one. Not at first glance anyway. But when you look further, you’ll see deacons living out a calling which emphasizes the ministry of ‘diakonia’, that is ‘service.’ In tonight’s ordination service, you’ll see us in our ‘diagonal’ stoles… representing the towel Christ used when he washed the disciples’ feet. You’ll see that stole represented on pins and posters and powerpoints, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the creation of the clergy Order of Deacon. You may also see the bowl and pitcher, again representing the servanthood of Christ.

We embrace another phrase that directs the ministry of the diakonia: a bridge between the church and the world. That’s why many deacons serve ‘in the world’, leading others toward--and living out our call to --Kingdom life here on earth. Other deacons serve within local churches toward the same goal.

Jackson – and others – have used this phrase as a greeting in his memos to our Order: ‘to all who serve Christ in the spirit of diakonia.’ While I’m speaking mostly for the Order of Deacons, we celebrate and support those serving within the ‘diakonia’ family: diaconal ministers, deaconesses, and home missionaries.

Our General Conference has defined and redefined this ministry of service through the years, and now in 2016 we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the clergy Order of Deacons. While this sounds like a name-change only, we became a fully ordained Order with Conference Membership and closer collegial relationship with Elders, Associate Members, and Local Pastors.

But, God and the General church aren’t finished with us yet. Through the years, we have become part of the clergy pension benefits, and in this conference, insurance benefits. We meet both the academic and BOMEC interview requirements of all the ordained. The most recent chapter was written last month at General Conference, when limited sacramental permission from the presiding Bishop was approved.

This last quadrennium‘s work with the Orders Team of the two conferences has expanded our relationships and appreciation for our connection. In addition, deacons are intentional about mutual supportive relationships and in March met over lunch for fellowship and with Victoria Rebeck of the General Board regarding the history, the challenges, and the visions of the ministry of the deacon.

We count it a privilege and a blessing to serve with all God’s people here in the Tennessee Conference.

Jackson Henry and Nan Zoller, Co-chairs.

Sixty years ago, on May 4, 1956, the former Methodist Church granted full clergy rights to women. After a day of back and forth legislation (perhaps not unlike that which occurred at the 2016 General Conference), it was finally voted that “women will now be welcome to apply for full membership in the Annual Conferences and will have Full Clergy Rights, rights equal in every way to the men.” It was 20 years later when clergywomen were elected to General Conference for the first time. (from the General Minutes of the 1956 Methodist Church General Conference) Two hundred years ago, the 1816 General Conference mandated the creation of a course of study for all aspiring clergy. From that point forward, a standard of learning had to be achieved, in addition to mentoring, for leaders to be ordained or licensed by the Methodist church…Today, through Methodist seminaries, extension sites and satellites, the Course of Study provides education and formation for 30% of pastors in the united States, and as much as 70% of pastors outside the U.S. This educational process has created an affordable, empowering pathway for licensed pastors across the globe, expanding the numbers of those who are equipped for ministry. We are especially appreciative of the leadership and support of Bishop Bill McAlilly along with the leadership and guidance provided by Tom Laney for the work of the Orders and Fellowship Team. We continuously give thanks for one another as co-chairs of the Orders and Fellowship for this last quadrennium, and we look forward to new leadership among these groups during the next four years. It has been a privilege to work as a team along with our counterparts from the Memphis Conference these past four years to explore ways to deepen our covenantal connection as Methodist clergy. Team members have lived in covenant with one another as we have worshipped together, prayed together, shared “how is it with your soul” check-ins, planned together, and closed with Holy Communion regularly. We covet for all our clergy brothers and sisters the support of being in covenant relationship with colleagues as a way to sustain and nurture faithfulness in ministry.
