•Adjust the distance between theseat and the pedals.Your seat should be as far back aspossible while still allowing youto depress the clutch pedal fully. The seatback should be adjustedso that your arms are slightly bentwhen you hold the steering wheel.

•Adjust the position of your headrestraint. For maximum safety your headshould be as close as possible tothe head restraint.

•Adjust the height of the seat. This adjustment allows you toselect the seat position whichoffers you the best possible vision.

•Adjust the position of the steeringwheel.

It is advisable not to tilt theseatback too far back toensure correct operation ofthe seat belts.

Make sure the seatback iscorrectly locked in position.

You are advised not to putanything on the floor in thedriver's footwell under heavybraking asit could slide underthe pedals and prevent their safeoperation.

Incorrectly adjusted seatbelts may cause injuries inthe event of an accident.Even pregnant women

should wear a seat belt. In this case, ensure that the lap belt is notexerting too much pressure on theabdomen.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTSThese are:

Seat belt pretensioners.

Force limiter.

Air bags for driver and frontpassenger.

These systems are provided to actindependently or together when thecar is subjected to a frontal impact.

There are three possibilities, depending on the force of theimpact:- protection is provided by the belt

only;- the pretensioner is triggered to

rectify belt position and take upplay in the belt;

- if the air bag and force limiter aretriggered, they provide additionalprotection in the event of the mostsevere impact.

Side air bags are provided toactivate in the event of a severeside impact.

Front seat belt pretensionersThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.

If the car is subject to a severefrontal impact, piston 1immediately retracts the seat beltbuckle pulling the seat belt tightagainst the body and therebyimproving its efficiency.

• Have the entire restraintsystem checked followingan accident.

• No work whatsoever may beperformed on the pretensionersystem (computer, wiring, etc.).

• Only qualified Renault Networkpersonnel may work on thepretensioner system to preventincorrect triggering of the systemwhich may cause injury.

• The electric trigger system mayonly be tested by a speciallytrained technician using specialequipment.

• When scrapping your car, contact your Renault Dealer fordisposal of the gas generator.

Warning concerning theservice life of the airbags

The pyrotechnic systems in airbags and pretensioners have alimited service life. Thesesystems must be replaced eachtime they are activated but at thelatest after they have been inservice for 10 years. This workmust always be undertaken by aRenault Dealer.

The seat belt pretensioners andthe air bag operate together. Ifone of the systems has passed thedate when it is due for renewal, itwill alter the overall safetyprotection provided.

Air bags for the driverand front passengerThese may be provided for thedriver and the front passenger.

The presence of this equipment isindicated by the words “Air bag” onthe steering wheel and thedashboard, and a label on the baseof the windscreen or on the sunvisor.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)

Air bags for the driverand front passenger (continued)Each air bag system consists of:- An air bag and gas generator fitted

in the steering wheel for the driverand in the dashboard for the frontpassenger.

- A computer for both systems, which includes the impactdetector and a monitor controllingthe electrical trigger system for thegas generator.

- A single warning light 1 on theinstrument panel.

OperationThe system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on(ignition key in position M:“Ignition on”).

If a severe frontal impact occurs, theair bag(s) inflate(s) in approximately30 milliseconds, cushioning theimpact of the driver's head againstthe steering wheel and the frontpassenger's head against thedashboard. The air bag then deflatesimmediately so that the passengersare not impeded in any way as theyget out of the car.

The air bag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. Thisexplains why, when the air baginflates, it will generate heat, produce smoke (this does not meanthat a fire is about to start) andmake a noise upon detonation. In asituation where an air bag isrequired, it must inflateimmediately and this may causesome minor, superficial grazing tothe skin.

FaultsWarning light 1 illuminates on theinstrument panel when the ignitionis turned on and then goes out aftera few seconds.

If it does not illuminate when theignition is turned on or if it flashes, there is a fault in the system.

Consult your Renault Dealer as soonas possible. Your protection will bereduced until this problem isrectified.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)All the warnings below are given so that, if the air bag is activated, it is not obstructed in any way and also to prevent therisk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the air bag inflates.

The air bag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the air bags and seat belts are integralparts of the same protection system. It is therefore essential that the seat belt is worn at all times. If seat belts arenot worn, the occupants are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. The risk of minorsuperficial injuries occurring when the air bag is deployed may also increase, although such minor injuries arealways possible with air bags.

The air bag does not offer protection against light or moderate frontal impacts, side or rear impacts or if the car turnsover.

Air bags for driver and passenger• No work or modification whatsoever may be performed on any part of the driver and passenger air bag system

(computer, wiring, etc.) except by qualified Renault network personnel.

• To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid incorrect triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified Renault Network personnel may work on the air bag system.

• As a safety precaution, have the air bag system checked if your car has been involved in an accident, is stolen orbroken into.

• When selling or lending the car, inform the user of these points and hand over this handbook with the car.

• When scrapping your car, contact your Renault Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).

All the warnings below are given sothat, if the air bag is activated, it isnot obstructed in any way and alsoto prevent the risk of seriousinjuries caused by items which maybe dislodged when the air baginflates.

Warnings concerning the driver’s air bag• Do not modify either the steering wheel or the steering wheel boss.

• Do not cover the steering wheel boss.

• Do not affix any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone bracket, etc.) to thesteering wheel boss.

• The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified Renaultnetwork personnel).

• Do not sit too close to the steering wheel. If you sit with your arms slightlybent (see “Adjusting your driving position” in section 1), it will ensure thatthere is sufficient space for the air bag to inflate properly and to be fullyeffective.

Warnings concerning the passenger air bag: location 1• Do not attach or glue any objects (pins, logo, clock, telephone mounting,

etc.) to the dashboard in the proximity of the air bag housing.

• Do not place anything between the dashboard and the passenger (animal, umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).

• The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as thereis a risk that serious injuries may be sustained. As a general rule, keep allparts of the body (knees, hands, head, etc.) well away from the dashboard.

IT IS FORBIDDEN TO FIT A REAR-FACING CHILD SEATON THE PASSENGER SEAT WHEN THE CARIS FITTED WITH A PASSENGER AIR BAG.

CHILD SAFETYIn all countries there are regulationsgoverning the use of restraintsystems for children and babies.

In Europe, children under 12 yearsof age or a height of less than1.50 m(1) (approx. 5 ft) must travelin an approved seat that is suitablefor the height and weight of thechild.

The driver is responsible forensuring that this equipment isused correctly.

Remember that a collision at30 mph (50 km/h) is the same asfalling from a height of 10metres. Expressed in other terms, transporting a child without arestraint is the equivalent ofallowing him or her to play on athird-floor balcony which doesnot have any railings.

(1) Always comply with the laws of thecountry in which you are travelling. They may be different to theguidelines in this handbook.

Under no circumstancesshould babies or children beallowed to travel sitting onthe knees of anotherpassenger in the car.

If a head-on collision occurs at 30mph (50 km/h), the resultingmomentum of a child weighing 30kg (66 lbs) will be the same as thatof a one tonne projectile: you willfind it impossible to hold the child, even if you yourself are wearing abelt.

It is particularly dangerous to putthe belt round your child when heor she is sitting on your knee.Never use the belt for more thanone person at the same time.

Child restraints for which approvalwas obtained after January 1992offer a much higher level of safetythan those approved before thatdate.

It is therefore advisable to select achild restraint that complies withEuropean regulation ECE 44.

Restraints that comply with thislegislation must be marked with anorange label bearing the letter Efollowed by a number (whichstands for the country where it istype approved) and the year inwhich the type approval wasgranted.

The standard classifies childrestraints in five categories:

Category 0: from 0 to 10 kg (0 to 22 lbs)Category 0+: from 0 to 13 kg (0 to 28 lbs)Category 1: from 9 to 18 kg (20 to 40 lbs)Category 2: from 15 to 25 kg (33 to 55 lbs)Category 3: from 22 to 36 kg (48 to 80 lbs)

CHILD SAFETY (continued)The right choiceThe safety of your children is alsoyour responsibility.

To ensure that your child has themaximum possible protection, werecommend that you use seatsobtained from a Renault Dealer.

Restraint systems for all thecategories are available. Thesesystems have been developedin consultation with themanufacturers and have been testedin Renault vehicles.

Consult your Renault Dealer andask him to help you install it.

Category 0 and 0+A child's neck is very susceptible toinjury up to the age of two. There is arisk that a child in a front-facingseat will sustain neck injuries in theevent of a frontal collision. Renaulttherefore recommends a rear-facingseat giving all-round protection andfitted with a safety harness (figure 1).

Category 1Between the ages of 2 and 4, achild's pelvis is not fully developed.Restraints using the car'sthree-point belts are not adequateand there is a risk that the child willsustain abdominal injuries in theevent of a frontal collision. Itis therefore advisable to userear-facing seats (figure 1), bucket-type seats (figure 2) or seats withharnesses.

To avoid any risk to your safety, we recommend that you useRENAULT approved accessories because they are suitable for yourcar and are the only accessories for which RENAULT will provide awarranty.

CHILD SAFETY (continued)

Category 2 (15 to 25 kg)(33 to 55 lbs)The type of restraint most suitablefor the pelvis of a child agedbetween 4 and 7 is one that can becombined with a three-point seatbelt. This is a booster seat (figure 3)with belt guides to ensure that thebelt will be worn flat over the thighsof the child.

A booster seat with a height-adjustable seatback and a belt guideare recommended as this will allowthe belt to be worn as close to thebase of the neck as possible but noton it. A bucket-type seat (figure 4)must be used for cars where the rearcentre seat is equipped with atwo-point belt.

Category 3For children aged over seven, abooster seat with belt guides isrecommended to ensure that thecar's three-point seat belt will beworn flat over the child's thighs.

A booster seat with aheight-adjustable seatback and abelt guide are recommended as thiswill allow the belt to be worn asclose to the base of the neck aspossible but not on it.

If a booster seat without a seatbackis used (figure 4), the car's headrestraint must be adjusted to suit thechild's stature; the upper edge of thehead restraint must be at the sameheight as the top of the child's headand should never be lower than thelevel of the child's eyes.

CHILD SAFETY (continued)

CHILD SAFETY

• No modifications may be made to the originally fitted parts of the restraint system (belts and seats and theirmountings).

• Follow carefully the fitting instructions provided by the manufacturer of the restraint system.

• Always avoid dressing the child in bulky garments and do not place any objects between the child and the restraintsystem.

• The seat belt in the car must be taut so that the child's seat is held in position securely. Check the tension regularly.

• Never pass the belt under the arm or behind the back.

• The harness or belt should be taut and fitted to suit the child's stature.

• Never allow your child to stand up or kneel on the seats while the car is moving.

• Check that the child is in the correct position for the entire journey, particularly when he or she is asleep.

• Use the seat belts to hold the seat in position, even if it is not occupied. Otherwise, if an accident were to occur, it maybecome dislodged and pose a risk to other car occupants.

• Have the seat belts and restraint systems in use at the time of a serious accident checked.

• Never leave a child unsupervised in a car, even if he/she is in a restraint device.

• Activate the rear door locks (if your car is equipped with these).

• Make sure the child does not get out of the car at the side where there is traffic.

• Set your children a good example - always wear your seat belt.

FUEL TANK (continued)Filling with fuelPetrol versionOnly use unleaded petrol.

Using leaded petrol will damage theanti-pollution system and may leadto a loss of warranty.

To ensure the fuel tank is not filledwith leaded petrol, the fuel tankfiller neck contains a restrictorfitted with a valve which onlyallows the nozzle for unleadedpetrol to be used (at the pump).- Insert the nozzle as far as it will go

so as to open the valve.- Keep the nozzle in this position

throughout the entire fillingoperation.

Filling with fuel (continued)Petrol and diesel versionsNo more than two filling operationsmay be made after the fuel feed hasswitched off automatically for thefirst time because there must besufficient space in the fuel tank toallow for expansion.

It is strictly forbidden towork on or modify thefuel supply system(computers, wiring, fuel

circuit, injector, protectivecovers...) in view of the possiblerisk to safety (except forqualified personnel from theRenault network).

SPECIAL FEATURES OF PETROL VERSIONSThe following operating conditions:• driving for a long time with the

low fuel level warning lightilluminated

• using leaded petrol• using lubrication additives or fuel

not approved by Renault

Or operating incidents such as:• faulty ignition, running out of

fuel or spark plug disconnected, causing engine misfiring andjerking when driving

• loss of power

may cause the catalytic converter tooverheat and thus reduce itsefficiency or even destroy it andcause thermal damage to the car.

If you note any of the aboveincidents, have the necessaryrepairs carried out as soon aspossible by your Renault Dealer.

These faults may be avoided bytaking your car regularly to yourRenault Dealer at the intervalsspecified in your Servicing booklet.

Starting problemsTo avoid damaging the catalyticconverter, do not keep trying tostart the engine (using the starter, orby pushing or towing the car)without having identified andcorrected the starting fault.

If the fault cannot be identified, donot persist in attempting to start theengine and call a Renault Dealer.

Do not park the car or run theengine in locations wherecombustible substances ormaterials such as grass or

leaves could come into contact witha hot exhaust system.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF DIESEL VERSIONSDiesel engine speedDiesel engines are fitted withinjection equipment incorporating amechanical governor whichprevents overrevving of the engineirrespective of the gear in use.

Lack of fuelIf the fuel tank has been draineddry, you may start the enginenormally after refilling the fuel tankprovided that the battery is wellcharged.

However, if after a few seconds andseveral attempts the engine fails tostart, contact a Renault Dealer.

Precautions to be taken inwinterTo avoid any problems in icyweather:• Ensure that battery is always fully

charged.

• Always keep the fuel tankrelatively full to avoid watervapour condensing in it andaccumulating at the bottom of thetank.

Vehicles equipped with dieselfuel heaterThis equipment enables diesel fuelto be used without an additivedown to –18°C or, if the vehicle isused regularly for short journeys(cold engine), down to –5°C.

ADVICE ON ANTI-POLLUTION, FUEL ECONOMY, DRIVINGRENAULT is actively participatingin the reduction of pollutantexhaust gas emissions and in savingenergy.

By virtue of its design, moderatefuel consumption and initialsettings, your Renault conforms tocurrent anti-pollution standards.Technical design, however, cannotachieve all. The fuel consumptionof your car and the level of pollutantexhaust gas emissions are verymuch within your control. Makesure that your car is maintainedcorrectly, use it carefully and watchyour driving style.

MaintenanceIt is important to remember thatfailure to respect anti-pollutionstandards could lead to legal actionagainst the car owner. In addition, the replacement of parts of theengine, fuel supply system andexhaust by parts other than thoseoriginally recommended by themanufacturer could alter your car insuch a way that it no longercomplies with anti-pollutionstandards.

Have your car checked and adjustedby your Renault Dealer inaccordance with the instructions inthe car’s servicing booklet.

Your Renault Dealer has all theequipment necessary for ensuringthat your car is maintained to itsoriginal standard.

Always remember that the emissionof pollutant fumes is directly linkedto fuel consumption.

Engine adjustments• Ignition: this does not require

adjustment.

• Spark plugs: the specifications ofthe Renault TechnicalDepartment must be strictlyobserved in order to achieveoptimum conditions of use, performance and output.

If the spark plugs have to bechanged, use the make, type andgap specified for your car'sengine. Consult your RenaultDealer for this information.

• Idling speed: this does not requireadjustment.

• Air and fuel filters: a cloggedfilter element reduces output andshould be changed.

• Injection pump setting: the pumpmust be set to the recommendedvalues.

ADVICE ON ANTI-POLLUTION AND HOW TO ECONOMISE ON FUEL, DRIVING (continued)

Driving• Drive carefully for the first few

miles until the engine reaches itsnormal operating temperature, rather than let it warm up whilethe car is stationary.

• Speed is expensive.

• “Sporty” driving uses a lot of fuel:drive with a “light right foot”.

• Study the road ahead so that youare able to brake as little aspossible, it can be sufficient justto lift off the accelerator.

• Avoid fierce acceleration.

• Do not overrev the engine in theintermediate gears. Always usethe highest ratio possible withoutlabouring the engine.

• Do not try to maintain the samespeed up a hill; accelerate nomore than you would on the level.Keep your foot in the sameposition on the accelerator pedal.

• Double declutching andaccelerating before switching offare superfluous actions inmodern cars.

• Bad weather, flooded roadsDo not drive throughfloods if the depth ofwater is above the loweredge of the wheel rims.

ADVICE ON ANTI-POLLUTION AND HOW TO ECONOMISE ON FUEL, DRIVING (continued)

General hints• Electricity is a “fuel”, so switch off

all electrical equipment which is notrequired.

However, (with safety always inmind), keep your lights on whenvisibility is poor (“see and be seen”).

• Try to use the air vents. Driving withthe windows open will increase fuelconsumption by 4% when travellingat a speed of 60 mph (100 km/h).

• Air conditioning increases fuelconsumption, especially in towndriving. Switch off the system whenit is not needed.

• Never fill the fuel tank right to thebrim as this is wasteful.

• Do not leave an empty roof rack inposition.

• It is better to fit a trailer for bulkyobjects.

• When towing a caravan, fit a winddeflector and adjust it carefully.

• Avoid using the car for door-to-doorcalls (short journeys with long waitsin between) because the enginenever reaches its normal operatingtemperature. Try to group your calls.

Tyres• Inadequate pressures may increase

fuel consumption.

• The use of non-recommended tyresmay also increase fuel consumption.

ENVIRONMENTYour vehicle has been designedwith the aim of caring for theenvironment.• The majority of versions are

equipped with a depollutionsystem including a catalyticconverter, a lambda sensor andan active carbon filter. (Theactive carbon filter preventsvapour from the petrol tank beingreleased into the open air.)

• These vehicles run on unleadedfuel only.

• 87% of your vehicle consists ofparts that can be recycled andalready contain recycledmaterials.

• 95% of the plastic components inyour vehicle are marked with asymbol which allows theprincipal component material tobe identified. These markingsmean that parts removed can besorted more easily, thusoptimising the recycling of eachof them.

In addition, your car meetsthe requirements of Europeanlegislation relating to environmentalprotection.

Make your contribution towardsprotection of the environment too!

When disposing of parts replacedduring routine maintenance(battery, oil filter, air filter, etc.) andoil containers (whether empty orfull of used oil, etc.), do not includethem with household waste.

Dispose of them through specialistorganisations. In all cases, complywith local bye-laws.

GEAR LEVER HANDBRAKE POWER STEERING

To select reverse gear(car stationary)Move the lever to neutral, then liftup ring 1 against the gear lever knobto enable selection of reverse gear.

The reversing lights will light up assoon as reverse gear is selected(with the ignition on).

To release:Pull the lever up slightly, pressbutton 2, then lower the lever to thefloor.

The red warning light on theinstrument panel will light up ifyou are driving with an incorrectlyreleased handbrake.

To applyPull the lever up.

The lever should travel about10 notches to hold the car. Your caris fitted with self-adjusting rearbrake shoes and the handbrakeshould only be adjusted during abrake overhaul.

When the car isstationary, apply thehandbrake fully toensure that the car

cannot move unintentionally.

Make sure the handbrake isproperly released when the car isbeing driven, otherwiseoverheating may occur.

Never leave the steering wheel onfull lock when the car is parked ifyou have power-assisted steeringfitted, as this may damage thepump.

As a general rule, youshould not switch off theignition when in motion, and never on hills

(power steering and brake servowill not function).

2.11

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) (depending on version or option)When braking sharply, the two mainaims are to reduce the stoppingdistance and to keep your car undercontrol. However, depending on thenature of the ground, weatherconditions and your reactions, thereis a danger that the wheels may lockand directional control may be lost. The anti-lock braking system (ABS)has been designed to combat thisdanger.

The brake control system preventsthe wheels from locking, even if thebrakes are applied too sharply, andallows the car to be steered and thusits direction to be controlled. Underthese circumstances it is quitepossible for the driver to steer thecar round an obstacle whilst brakingat the same time. Also, this systemallows you to optimise stoppingdistances, especially whenroadholding becomes difficult (wetor slippery roads, variable roadsurfaces).

Although this system allows you tooptimise stopping distances, theABS system does not allow you toincrease car performance, which isphysically linked to the localconditions of tyre/ground adhesion. The rules of good driving practicemust always be observed (such asdriving at a safe distance from thevehicle in front). The fact that thecar’s safety has been enhancedshould not encourage you to takerisks.

Whenever the system is in use, youwill feel a varying degree of pulsingthrough the brake pedal. Thesetangible signs will warn you that theadhesion between the tyres and theground has reached its limit andthat you must adapt your drivingstyle to suit the road conditions.

FaultsTwo possible situations may occur:

1 - The warning light is

lit on the instrument panel.Braking is still available, butwithout the ABS system. Consult aRenault Dealer as soon as possible.

2 - Warning lights and

are lit on the instrument panel. This indicates that both the brakingsystem and the ABS system arefaulty. Your car brakes may stillpartially operate. However, it isdangerous to brake suddenly andyou must therefore stop as soon astraffic conditions allow. Contactyour Renault Dealer as a matter orurgency.

The braking control provided by the anti-lock braking system is independent of the effort applied to the brake pedal. In an emergency, apply strong and continuous pressure to the brake pedal - there is no need to pump it repeatedly.

HEATING - VENTILATION - AIR CONDITIONING (continued)

Temporary isolation of thepassenger compartmentNormal operation of the heating andventilation system is obtained usingexternal air.

Recirculation of air allows the externalatmosphere to be isolated (driving inpolluted areas).

To change to isolation mode, presscontrol D to start the air conditioningand move control C from 0 to 4.

Air recirculation allows the desiredcomfort level to be achieved asquickly as possible.

This starts or stops air recirculation. Inthis position the air is taken frominside the passenger compartment andis recirculated without admittingexternal air.

Prolonged use of isolation mode causemay mist the windows slightly orcause odours due to the air not beingrenewed.

It is advisable therefore to return tonormal operation (external air) byadjusting control C when you havepassed through the polluted area.

When the air conditioningsystem is operating, allwindows must be closed formaximum efficiency.

If there is an operating fault, consultyour Renault Dealer.

Do not open the refrigeration circuit:this may cause injury to the eyes orskin.

Air conditioning controlsControl D operates or stopsthe air conditioning system.

The system cannot be switched onif control C is set to 0.

Use the air conditioning systemoccasionally in winter to keep thesystem in good working order.

Do not worry about any waterwhich may appear from underneaththe car as this results fromcondensation.

Using the air conditioning system:• lowers the internal passenger

compartment temperature,especially in hot weather, whendriving in traffic or when the carhas been parked in the sun;

• reduces the humidity of the airblown inside the passengercompartment (prevents misting).

Fuel consumption increases whenthe air conditioning system is beingused. (Switch it off when it is notrequired.)

Note: the air conditioning may beused in all conditions but does notoperate when the externaltemperature is low.

• Button D not activated (indicatorlight E not illuminated)The air conditioning is notoperating.Heating and ventilation aretherefore identical to that of a carwithout air conditioning.

CHANGING A WHEEL

• Remove the hubcap (see Hubcapsection).

• Loosen the nuts using thewheelbrace 1, pulling upwards.

• Insert the jack horizontally, thejack head must be slid under thelower part of the bodyworknearest the wheel concerned.

• Unscrew the jack by hand at firstto align the base plate (whichshould be positioned slightlyfurther under the car than the jackhead). Use a piece of wood underthe base plate if the car is on softground.

• Insert the hook 2 of thewheelbrace into the jack 3 andapply a few turns to lift the wheeloff the ground:

• Remove the nuts.

• Take off the wheel.

• Position the spare wheel on thecentral hub and turn it to locatethe mounting holes in the wheeland the hub.

• Tighten the nuts and lower thejack.

• Tighten the nuts fully when thewheel is on the ground.

Park the car on flat, firmground (if necessary, inserta solid support under thebaseplate of the jack), and

turn on the hazard warning lights.Apply the handbrake and put thecar in gear (first or reverse, orposition P for automatictransmission).Ask all the occupants to leave thecar and keep them away fromtraffic.

If you have a puncture, replace the wheel as soonas possible.A tyre which has been

punctured should always beinspected (and repaired if possible)by a specialist.

5.06

TYRESTyre safetyThe tyres are the only contactbetween the car and the road, so it isessential to keep them in goodcondition.

You must make sure that your tyresconform to local road trafficregulations.

When they need to bereplaced, only tyres ofthe same make, dimension, type and

profile should be used.

Tyres fitted to the car shouldeither be identical to those fittedoriginally or conform to thoserecommended by your RenaultDealer.

Maintaining the tyresThe tyres must be in good conditionand the tread must have sufficientdepth; tyres approved by Renault'sTechnical Department have treadwear indicators 1 which are raisedpads moulded into the tread atseveral points.

When the tread has worn down tothe level of these pads, they becomevisible 2: the tyres concerned mustbe replaced now as only 1.6 mmmaximum of tread remains and thisis not sufficient to maintain goodgrip on wet roads.

Incidents which occur whendriving, such as striking the kerb, may damage the tyres and couldlead to misalignment of the frontaxle geometry.

An overloaded car, long journeys bymotorway, particularly in very hotweather, or continual driving onpoorly surfaced minor roads willlead to more rapid tyre wear andaffect safety.

TYRES (continued)Tyre pressuresTyre pressures must be adhered to.(Remember to check the sparewheel at the same time.) Pressuresmust be checked at least once amonth and always before a longjourney. (Refer to the section on“Tyre pressures”.)

Incorrect tyre pressureslead to abnormal tyrewear and unusually hot

running, factors which mayseriously affect safety and leadto:- poor roadholding- the risk of blow-outs or of

throwing a tread at high speed.

Pressures depend on the loadand the driving speed. Adjust thepressures according to theconditions of use. (Refer to thesection on tyre pressures.)

Pressures should be checked whenthe tyres are cold; ignore higherpressures which may be reached inhot weather or following a journeyat higher speeds.

If tyre pressures cannot be checkedwhen the tyres are cold, theindicated pressures should beincreased by 0.2 to 0.3 bar.

Never deflate a hot tyre.

Note: a label (depending on countryor version) stuck on the edge orframe of the driver's door gives therecommended tyre pressures.

Fitting new tyres

For safety reasons, thisoperation must only becarried out by aspecialist.

Fitting different tyres maychange your car as follows:- It may mean that your car no

longer conforms to currentregulations.

- It may change the way ithandles when cornering.

- It may cause the steering to beheavy.

- It may cause tyre noise.- It may affect the use of chains.

Changing wheels aroundThis practice is not recommended.

Spare wheelRefer to the information on thespare wheel and instructions onhow to change a wheel in section 5.

TYRES (continued)Use in winter• Chains

For safety reasons, fitting chainson the rear axle is absolutelyforbidden.

Fitting tyres larger than thoseoriginally fitted makes the use ofchains impossible.

The use of snow chains isonly possible with tyres ofthe same size as thoseoriginally fitted to yourcar.

Special feature of emergency sparewheel for temporary use:chains cannot be fitted to thesewheels. If one of the front tyres ispunctured, it is therefore essentialto fit one of the rear wheels toreplace the punctured wheel and tofit the emergency spare wheel inplace of the rear wheel.

• “Snow” or winter tyresWe recommend that these arefitted to all four wheels to ensurethat your car retains maximumroad holding.

Note: these tyres may sometimeshave:- A specific direction of travel.- A maximum speed which may

be lower than the maximumspeed of your car.

• Studded tyresThis type of equipment may onlybe used for a limited period andas laid down by local legislation.

It is necessary to keep to the speedspecified by current legislation.

As a minimum, these tyres may befitted to the two front axle wheels.

In all cases, we would recommendthat you consult your RenaultDealer who will be able to adviseyou on the choice of equipmentwhich is most suitable for your car.

BATTERY: breakdownIn the event of a fault:Isolate the battery by unscrewingone of the terminals.

To avoid all risk of sparks:- Ensure that the consumers are

disconnected beforedisconnecting or reconnecting thebattery.

- When charging, stop the chargerbefore connecting ordisconnecting the battery.

- Do not place metal objects on thebattery to avoid creating a shortcircuit between the terminals.

Connecting a battery chargerBoth battery leads must bedisconnected (engine switched off).

Do not disconnect the battery whenthe engine is running. Follow theinstructions for use given by themanufacturer of the battery chargeryou are using.

Only a well-charged andwell-maintained battery will have along and useful life and enable youto start the vehicle’s enginenormally.

The battery must be kept clean anddry.

Have the battery's charge statuschecked regularly:• especially if you use your vehicle

for short journeys or for frequentdriving in town;

• When the external temperaturedrops (in winter), the chargedecreases. In winter, only usethose electrical componentswhich are really necessary.

• Finally, you should understandthat the charge decreasesnaturally as a result of certainpermanent consumers such as:the clock, after sales accessories...

When a large number of accessoriesare fitted to the vehicle, have themconnected to + after ignition feed.In this case, it is advisable to haveyour vehicle fitted with a batterywhich has an increased nominalcapacity. Consult your RenaultDealer.

If your vehicle is to be left stationaryfor a relatively long time, disconnect the battery or have itrecharged regularly, in particularduring cold weather. Theequipment with a memory, radioand trip computer will then have tobe reprogrammed. The battery mustbe stored in a cool dry place, protected from frost.

Specific procedures maybe required to chargesome batteries. Consultyour Dealer.

Avoid all risk of sparks whichmay cause an immediateexplosion and charge the batteryin a well-ventilated area.Risk of serious injury.

BATTERY: breakdown (continued)Starting the car using thebattery from another vehicleWhen starting your car from anothervehicle’s battery, proceed asfollows:Obtain suitable jump leads (with alarge cross section) from a RenaultDealer or, if you already have jumpleads, ensure that they are in perfectcondition.

The two batteries must have anidentical nominal voltage: 12 volts. The battery supplying the currentshould have a capacity (amp-hours,Ah) which is at least the same asthat of the discharged battery.

A frozen battery must be thawed outbefore current is supplied to it.

Ensure that there is no risk ofcontact between the two vehicles(risk of short circuiting when thepositive terminals are connected)and that the discharged battery isproperly connected. Switch off yourcar ignition.

Start the engine of the vehiclesupplying the current and run it at amoderate speed.

Attach one end of the positive cable(+) A to the (+) terminal 1 of thedischarged battery, the other to the(+) terminal 2 of the batterysupplying the current.

Attach one end of the negative cable(–) B to the (–) terminal 3 of thebattery supplying the current andthe other end to the (–) terminal 4 ofthe discharged battery.

Check that there is no contactbetween cables A and B and thatcable A (+) is not touching anymetal parts on the vehiclesupplying the current.

Start the engine as you wouldnormally. As soon as it starts, disconnect cables A and B inreverse order (4-3-2-1).

Handle the battery withcare as it containssulphuric acid whichmust not come into

contact with the eyes or skin. If itshould, wash the affected areawith plenty of cold water.Keep all naked flames, red-hotobjects and sparks away from thebattery as there is a risk ofexplosion.Take care when working in theengine compartment as theengine cooling fan may start upat any moment.

FUSES

CORRECT INCORRECT

Fuse box 2If an electrical component fails tooperate, before making furtherinvestigations check that the fusesare sound. Also make sure that thefaulty component is correctlyconnected. In the event of a shortcircuit, unscrew one of the wingnuts on the battery terminals toisolate the battery.

Raise the cover A using the handle 1.

To identify the fuses, refer to thefuse allocation label 4 (shown onthe page opposite).

It is advisable not to use the freefuse locations.

Use the tweezers 3 to remove thefuse.

To remove the fuse from thetweezers, slide the fuse to the side.

A sensible precaution:obtain a box of spare bulbs andfuses from your Renault Dealer.

Check the fuse in question and replace it if necessary with a fuse ofthe same rating.

If a fuse is fitted where the rating is too high, it may cause theelectrical circuit to overheat (risk of fire) in the event of an item ofequipment using an excessive amount of current.
