Overview Northern Italy boasts some of Europe’s most extraordinary art, including the World Heritage-listed mosaics in Ravenna and Leonardo’s celebrated Last Supper in Milan. Many of these masterpieces, such as Piero della Francesca’s tiny Flagellation in Urbino, are set in remote but stunning locations, with panoramic views over the Italian countryside. This 15-day tour traces the development and artistic expression of Italy’s Renaissance courts, growing from small city-states to become major cultural centres. Local dukes – rising to power and wealth from modest circumstances – sought to express princely virtue through magnificent buildings and works of art. In Urbino, we survey enigmatic works by Piero della Francesca and witness the emergence of local boy Raphael. In Mantua, Mantegna, Alberti and Giulio Romano completed masterpieces of court painting and architecture, while in Milan Leonardo da Vinci embarked on some of his most ambitious projects. Ferrara, a lesser-known Renaissance centre, was at the forefront of Italy’s adoption of the Flemish style, and in Rimini the Italian reinvention of the classical past reaches an apogee in the Tempio Malatestiano. Such artistic patronage immortalised individuals like Federigo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, and Sigismondo Malatesta, the original ‘soldier-scholars’ of the Renaissance, as well as the great dynasties of Gonzaga (Mantua), Este (Ferrara) and Sforza (Milan). The prestige, style and taste of these Renaissance courts – perfectly preserved in the provincial towns of northern Italy – would spread throughout Europe and become the standard by which elegance and gracious living were judged.

Your tour leader Dr Kathleen Olive has more than 15 years’ experience leading tours to Italy. She has a PhD in Italian literature, regularly presents popular lectures and courses at the Sydney WEA, Nicholson Museum, and for the Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society. Kathleen speaks fluent Italian.

Kathleen has a specific interest in Italian culture of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and in 2015 her critical edition of the Codex

Rustici – a commonplace book compiled and illustrated by a 15th-century Florentine goldsmith – was published by Olschki. It was presented to Pope Francis I as an official gift on his first trip to Florence, and the book has subsequently been launched at the Uffizi Galleries, the Vatican Museums, and even at the Custodia della Terra Santa in Jerusalem! Kathleen has led tours exclusively for Academy Travel since 2008, to Italy, Spain, France, Turkey, the USA and, most recently, Japan.

“Kathleen is an exceptional tour leader: intelligent, extremely knowledgeable, flexible, good humoured and eternally patient. She is most adept at managing the dynamics of a varied group of people, and at catering to the needs of individuals within it.”

Tour Highlights

LEONARDO DA VINCI IN MILAN Encounter the genius at work in Renaissance Milan, from our private visit of his experimental Last Supper, to his pensive Portrait of a musician. We examine the invention showcased in Leonardo’s Codex Atlanticus, now in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, and tour his recently rediscovered vineyard, bequeathed after Leonardo’s death in France to his beloved and problematic assistant, Salaì.

FAIRYTALE URBINO Perched in the rolling, lush landscape of Le Marche, Urbino is a legend come to life. Small and perfectly preserved, it boasts a stunning Renaissance palace, a number of significant works by Piero della Francesca, and the jewel-box of Federigo’s studiolo (study) in inlaid woodwork. To walk its cobblestoned streets is to step back into the world of the Renaissance.

MANTEGNA IN GONZAGA MANTUA Elegant Mantua brims with the art and architecture commissioned by its cultured patrons, the Gonzaga dynasty. Andrea Mantegna, uniting Renaissance classicism with a northern sensitivity to colour and detail, was the family’s most astute portraitist. His frescoes in the Palazzo Ducale’s Camera degli Sposi celebrate their magnificence in the 15th century – before the dynasty’s long and spectacular decline.

THE GASTRONOMY OF NORTHERN ITALY Northern Italy is home to some of Italy’s most vibrant food cultures, with varying terrain – the flat plains of the Po delta, the mountains of Le Marche – ensuring a diverse gastronomy and wide selection of local wines. In Bologna, Urbino and near Parma, we meet passionate providores and restauranteurs, who introduce us to the food heritage of these regions.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE IN RAVENNA Ravenna, variously capital of the Western Roman Empire, the Ostrogothic kingdom of Italy and a Byzantine exarchate, preserves Western Europe’s most stunning and complete Roman mosaics. From Sant’Apollinare in Classe’s aqueous light, to imperial splendour in San Vitale and the glowing intimacy of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the rich colours and glittering gold of Ravenna’s monuments are astounding.

Detailed itinerary Included meals are shown with the symbols B, L and D.

Tuesday 29 September Arrival

Your tour leader, Dr Kathleen Olive, will meet the group in the hotel lobby at 5.00pm, and there will be a light dinner in a restaurant near the hotel after a tour briefing and orientation stroll. Overnight Milan (D)

Wednesday 30 September Leonardo da Vinci at the Sforza court

This morning we are booked to view Leonardo’s masterly Last Supper at the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the heart of the residential district developed by Ludovico Sforza for his courtiers. We continue on to admire Leonardo’s impact on subsequent Lombard artists at San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore. After lunch at leisure, we walk to the Ambrosiana, where Leonardo’s lovely Portrait of a musician, along with his Codex Atlanticus and masterpieces by Raphael and Caravaggio, remain at the heart of this dynastic collection. Tonight we enjoy a welcome dinner together. Overnight Milan (B, D)

Thursday 1 October Masterpieces of the Brera

We begin the day by ascending elevators to the roof of Milan’s cathedral, which offers spectacular views over the city and a close appreciation of the wonders of Gothic stone masonry. We then continue to the Pinacoteca di Brera, a world-class collection of northern Italian art, bringing together many of the works produced in the Renaissance courts we will visit. We admire Mantegna’s Lamentation of Christ and Piero della Francesca’s representation of Federico da Montefeltro’s court in his Holy Conversation, as well as numerous artworks by Bellini, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio and Rembrandt. The afternoon is at leisure in the gallery, or to indulge in some shopping. Overnight Milan (B)

Friday 2 October Frescoes & food in Emilia-Romagna

We depart Milan today by private coach, bound for Mantua. We stop in Fontanellato, a small town dominated by the

Tour start & finish time

The tour begins in the lobby of our hotel in Milan at 5.00pm, on Tuesday 29 September.

The tour concludes after breakfast in our hotel in Bologna, on Tuesday 13 October.

extraordinary Rocca di Sanvitale, the looming – and moated! – castle of a provincial dynasty. Inside, a small, elegant chamber frescoed by Parmigianino shows the horrible fate of Actaeon, who stumbled upon Diana while bathing. We also see the optical chamber installed by a Sanvitale lord, to spy on his subjects as they went about the village! After lunch in an excellent country restaurant, we continue on to Mantua, where the evening is at leisure. Overnight Mantua (B, L)

Saturday 3 October Mantegna in Mantua

We spend the morning exploring the early Renaissance monuments of Mantua, including a guided tour of the Ducal Palace. This vast agglomeration of medieval and Renaissance structures now houses fine works of art, including Andrea Mantegna’s celebrated Camera degli Sposi or “bridal chamber”. We also see the early church of Sant’Andrea, designed by Leon Battista Alberti, and the later Teatro Bibiena, which embodies many ideals of Renaissance humanism and scientific endeavour. The afternoon and evening are at leisure. Overnight Mantua (B)

Sunday 4 October In Ferrara with the Este

Perhaps today the least well-known of Italy’s Renaissance centres, Ferrara was the final word in 15th-century innovation. The Este were among the first to invite Flemish artists, such as Rogier van der Weyden, to their court and encouraged Italian artists to perfect the “new” oil medium. At the Palazzo Diamanti, we see how locals such as Cosmé Tura adapted northern models to Italian concerns. The Palazzo Schifanoia is, at the time of writing, closed for earthquake repairs, but should it re-open we will visit it to survey glorious frescoes depicting the court of Borso d’Este, executed by Francesco del Cossa and others. Ferrara has a long Jewish Italian intellectual history (novelist Giorgio Bassani was a local, for example), and in the afternoon we pay a visit to the newly-opened Museo dell’ebraismo italiano. It hosts temporary exhibitions exploring the rich history of Jewish cultural life in the Italian peninsula. We return to Mantua in the late afternoon. Overnight Mantua (B)

Monday 5 October Villas and gardens of Renaissance Mantua

We begin the day with an excursion to the garden of Sigurtà, located outside the town of Mantua. This English-style garden – with roses, tulips and a charming labyrinth – has passed through the hands of a number of patrician families, and has been open to the public since 1978. It has won recognition in recent years as one of the most beautiful parklands in Europe. Returning to Mantua for lunch at leisure, we have a guided tour in the afternoon of the Palazzo Te, an extraordinary pleasure palace on the outskirts of Mantua, near Alberti’s Renaissance temple, San Sebastiano, and Andrea Mantegna’s well-preserved house. The Palazzo Te was decorated by one of the finest Mannerist

painters of the 16th century: Giulio Romano, a student of Raphael’s, who plays as easily here with grand mythological narratives as with erotic jokes and manipulations of perspective and proportion. The evening is at leisure. Overnight Mantua (B)

Tuesday 6 October Piero della Francesca and Rimini

We depart Mantua this morning, bound for Urbino. En route we stop at the coastal town of Rimini. In the 15th century it was ruled by the Malatesta family. Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta had a horrible reputation – for poisoning wives and supposedly terrifying his enemy, Pope Pius II, with his cruel rapacity – but he also had Leon Battista Alberti design his classically inspired Tempio Malatestiano, and Piero della Francesca create a fresco for its interior. After exploring Rimini, we continue to Urbino and arrive in the afternoon. There is a light dinner near our hotel tonight. Overnight Urbino (B, D)

Wednesday 7 October Fairytale Urbino

This morning we tour the principal sites of Urbino, a small hill-town which was transformed by the benevolent rule of Federico da Montefeltro. We visit the Palazzo Ducale and its celebrated intarsia-work studiolo, and the Galleria Nazionale, with Piero della Francesca’s tiny Flagellation. In the afternoon we take an optional walk to the Parco della Resistenza for panoramic views over the town. The evening is at leisure. Overnight Urbino (B)

Thursday 8 October The republic of San Marino

San Marino is the world’s smallest and oldest republic. It consists of three ancient castles perched on sheer cliffs rising implausibly out of the flatlands of Romagna, and a tangled knot of cobblestone streets. Today we take a guided tour of the town and enjoy its extraordinary views. We then visit the ancient fortress town of Gradara, with its iconic castle, Dantesque tales of illicit love, and official status as one of Italy’s most beautiful towns (or borghi più belli d’Italia). We return to Urbino in the late afternoon. Overnight Urbino (B)

Friday 9 October On the Via Aemilia

Today we follow an ancient Roman road from the Adriatic and thence to Bologna, stopping in the small town of Cesena along the way to tour an extraordinary monument of the Italian Renaissance. Cesena, now a sleepy provincial town, is part of the region known as the Romagna, hotly contested in the Renaissance by the papacy (particularly Alexander VI’s son, Cesare Borgia) and local lords from the Malatesta and Montefeltro dynasties. In Cesena, the Biblioteca Malatestiana is an extraordinary monument to the humanism of these provincial figures. After visiting the library, we continue to Bologna where we enjoy a group meal near our hotel. Overnight Bologna (B, D)

Saturday 10 October Bologna in the Middle Ages

Today we explore the medieval and Renaissance heritage of Bologna, witnessing the transition between styles in the city’s centro storico, from the splendid complex of the Sette Chiese based on Jerusalem’s Holy Sepulchre, to the medieval theology of San Petronio’s frescoes and the drama of Christ’s Passion in Santa Maria della Vita’s famed terracotta sculptures. After lunch at leisure, there is the option to continue to San Giacomo Maggiore, in the university district, where we see how rulers in less-important centres, such as Bologna’s Bentivoglio family, used artists like Lorenzo Costa to strengthen their local profile through explicit reference to their grander connections in Ferrara and Milan. You might wish to visit the city’s art gallery, the Pinacoteca Nazionale, or the excellent Museo Medievale. Overnight Bologna (B)

Sunday 11 October “Dark Age” glory in Ravenna

Today we travel to Ravenna, capital of the Byzantine Empire in Italy from the 5th to 8th centuries AD. The churches and baptisteries of this town are decorated with the finest Late Roman mosaics, gorgeous compositions reflecting a variety of religious and imperial themes, and we spend a full day exploring their contexts. We return to Bologna in the late afternoon, and the evening is at leisure. Overnight Bologna (B)

Monday 12 October in Modena

Today we make the short journey to Modena, once a trading outpost on a significant medieval road and the eventual base of Ferrara’s Este dynasty. Our walking tour of the historic centre includes the cathedral, where we survey Wiligelmus’s sculptural reliefs on its façade, one of Romanesque art’s most important achievements, and also enjoy a tasting of the certified local product: balsamic vinegar! Our farewell lunch is in a celebrated Michelin-starred restaurant. The later afternoon is at leisure, for last-minute shopping or packing. Overnight Bologna (B, L, balsamic vinegar tasting)

Tuesday 13 October Departure

Our tour concludes this morning, after breakfast in our hotel. Departing group members have made individual arrangements for their onward travel: please check your documentation for more information.

About Academy TravelEach year Academy Travel organises around 60 journeys to Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia and the Americas, each focusing on a distinctive historical, artistic or cultural theme. The aim of every Academy Travel journey is to combine the pleasures of independent travel with the benefits and shared enjoyment of a group. Academy Travel is an Australian-owned travel company, founded in 2004. The company’s staff includes both academic experts and travel professionals with over two decades’ industry experience. We also have our own office in Rome which organises our tours in Western Europe. This means we have direct control over the selection of hotels, restaurants, coaches and local guides, guaranteeing superior quality.

Years of experienceAcademy Travel was founded in 2004 by a team with decades of prior experience in small group travel. On average, our tour leaders have over 11 years’ experience, some with 25 or more years. To ensure quality, we have our own office in Rome, Italy and a network of trusted suppliers around the world.

Great itinerariesAcademy Travel works hard to create itineraries that provide a balanced experience – walking tours, museum and gallery visits, live performances, city and countryside. We’re proud to be constantly innovating, from opening up new destinations, creating tours around festivals and special exhibitions, to providing unrivalled depth in our residential tours.

Like-minded groupsOver the years we’ve been in operation, we’ve developed a loyal band of Academy Travellers, some of whom have travelled with us more than 10 times. They say the small groups (maximum 20, average 17) and distinct themes of our tours attract like-minded travellers and create a relaxed, convivial atmosphere.

Long staysFeedback from our clients consistently tells us that creating itineraries with three and four-night stops, or even longer, is far more appealing that rushing from place to place. Wherever possible, we plan our tours around a limited number of stops, making your travels more relaxed and more meaningful.

Special EventsA private viewing of the Sistine Chapel? Tickets to a sold-out concert by the Berlin Philharmonic? A world-famous art fair? Access to private homes and gardens? Behind-the-scenes visits? Many of our tours feature access to places and events that are usually not offered on most group tours.

Expert tour leadersWe work closely with a team of academically qualified and highly experienced tour leaders. They don’t just ‘rattle off the facts’ – they help us plan our itineraries and, on tour, freely share their deep knowledge and genuine passion. Most of our tour leaders are still teaching at an advanced level and many are still undertaking academic research.
