1 Basic information● The Remote Power Switch (RPS) is used to power on and off the power sup-

ply on up to four systems or devices connected to it on paths via an Ethernet connection. Every system connected in the Ethernet LAN can be configured to trigger the relevant switching operations (multihost capability). Passwords are used to protect against inadvertent or unauthorized access.

● The RPS allows the switching status of the power supply to consumers con-nected via Ethernet to be queried.

● PRIMEPOWER systems with a power control adapter can be powered on remotely by means of a connected RPS.

● If consumers connected to an RPS require more power then the maximum output current permitted by the RPS, safety boxes offering a higher output current can be connected in the outgoing current.

● The RPS is designed for installation in 19-inch racks and comes supplied with the necessary assembly material.

● Configuration, initiation of switching operations, status queries etc. are gen-erally performed on the basis of commands.

1.1 Implementation and system affiliation of the RPS

The RPS was developed primarily for powering on and off PRIMEPOWER serv-ers and FibreCAT peripherals in cluster configurations. The following applica-tion scenarios are envisaged, some of which can also be implemented in paral-lel using the same RPS hardware:

● Powering on/off peripheral cabinets (also those shared by a number of server systems)

– together with server systems

– online

● Powering off error-prone servers online (elimination of nodes in clusters) in order to prevent complete system faults

● Powering on PRIMEPOWER systems

Implementation and system affiliation of the RPS Basic information

● Remote powering on PRIMEPOWER systemsPRIMEPOWER systems provided with a Power Control (PC) Interface, can be powered on remotely by means of a connected RPS (port 5). To do this, the RPS has to be connected to the PRIMEPOWER server by a PC cable. Powering off the PRIMEPOWER server via port 5 is not possible.

● Delayed powering on/off (for example in order to initiate the backup of cache contents to hard disk on RAID systems by disabling a redundant power pack before the second power pack is switched off).

1.1.1 Definitions

Master A Master can be an RPS or a Remote Server (Management) Board

(RSB) in a PRIMEPOWER system. A Master RPS primarily has the task to send switch orders to Slave RPSs via Ethernet. The Master RPS of

one system can be configured as Slave RPS in other systems and thus can also be used for node elimination. But it can not function as sub-enclosure at the same time. RPS and server are connected via a PC cable (cf. table “Product structure” on page 49). Via a Master RPS the connected PRIMEPOWER server can be powered on remotely.

Slave RPS A Slave RPS can receive switch orders from the Master RPS, but it can

also be switched to stand-alone operation. Slave RPSs are used for node elimination.

Sub-enclosure A sub-enclosure powers on the configurated ports as soon as the first

Master is powered on, and powers them off when the last Master is powered off. These ports are indicated during the configuration of the sub-enclosure.

Multimaster Peripheral cabinets that are shared by a number of server systems are

powered on when the first server is powered on, and powered off toge-ther with the last server.

Node elimination By means of node elimination single servers within a cluster are powered

off.

1.1.2 Dependencies and release restrictions

● Based on their power draw, the PRIMEPOWER100N through PRIMEPOWER650 systems from the PRIMEPOWER system family can be switched with an RPS without safety boxes being connected in the outgoing current.

● Server systems can only be powered on in an orderly way with the RPS using its power control adapter. The orderly powering down of the server system must be initiated on a different path.

● In order to power on a PRIMEPOWER server via an RPS, its control panel switch must be set to AUTO or LOCK depending on the system.

● If an RSB has to be used in the form of an internal PCI controller because there is no PC (power control) adapter available to which an external RPS can be connected, the remote power-on function of the server will not be

available. The RSB always should be run with the provided standby power supply.

● The load output ports of an RPS that is used as a master (see example “Master RPS” on page 31) must not be used for powering on and off shared peripherals in multihost configurations.

PC/PW ON/OFF

PRIMEPOWER-specific adapter (power control, 8-pin mini DIN) for checking that a connection exists to a host (even if the connection is without current), for querying its poweron status, if appropriate, or for powering on the host. The control panel switch on the PRIMEPOWER host must be set to AUTO (Taiho) or LOCK (PW650/850) for these functions.

3 Rack installationA carrier plate that can accommodate up to two RPSs (or RCA4 or one RPS and one RCA4) is used for installing the RPS in racks.

The carrier plate only can be installed in the rack from the rear:

● Horizontally in the PRIMECENTER(2) rack (PCR2) using one of the two retaining clips in the clip set 1U (GP70F-ZB211)

● Horizontally in the PRIMECENTER(1)/PRIMEOFFICE rack (PCR1) using the other of the two retaining clips in the clip set 1U (GP70F-ZB211)

● Horizontally in every 19-inch standard rack

V Vertical rack installation in the 5-inch area is not planned.

Before the carrier plate can be installed in the rack, the RPSs (or the RCA4) must be secured on the plate.i

The RPSs (or RCA4) are secured on the carrier plate using their side housing screws.

● On the common inner side of both devices, the heads of the two housing screws are secured in the horizontal slits in the support profile to the center of the carrier plate.

● On the outer parts of the two devices, the housing screws act as clamping screws in the vertical slits of the external support profile of the carrier plate.

Ê Place the carrier plate horizontally on a working surface with its brackets for screwing it down in the rack in front. Set down one of the devices being installed with the front side (the side with the signal ports on the RPS) facing to the front.

Ê Loosen the left housing screw on one of the devices being installed in the left assembly location by approx. 2 mm.

Ê Diagonally lower the device being installed on the left side from above onto the left assembly location of the carrier plate, so that the screw heads insert from the left into the horizontal slits in the support profile to the center of the carrier plate.

Ê Press down the device on the left onto the carrier plate so that the loosened housing screws to the front and rear fit respectively into the rear one of the two vertical slits on the left support profile.

Ê Secure the two screws.

Installing the device in the right assembly location

Ê Proceed as for the left mounting location but place the carrier plate and device being installed horizontally at a 180 degree rotated angle on the working surface (carrier plate brackets for the rack assembly to the rear, front of the device to the rear).

3.2 Installing the carrier plate and RPS in the rack

Ê First screw down the appropriate retaining clips from the clip set GP70F-ZB211 in the case of PRIMECENTER racks.

– On the PRIMECENTER(2) rack (PCR2), this is the clip used in the rack both for the width alignment from 610 mm to 19 inches and the depth alignment. Two thread-rolling M5x10 screws with spring centering wash-ers are used to secure the clips.

– On the PRIMECENTER(1)/PRIMEOFFICE rack, this is the clip used in the rack simply for the width alignment from 610 mm to 19 inches. Two cage nuts and two M5x10 screws are used to secure the clips.

Retaining clips need not be installed in the case of a 19” standard rack.

Ê Tightly screw down the carrier plate horizontally from the rear in the rack using four cage nuts, as shown in the two previous diagrams for the PRIME-CENTER(1)/PRIMEOFFICE racks.

4 Startup

4.1 Setting the cabinet ID

Each RPS cabinet (cabinet, 19-inch rack, extension module, etc.) in the system must be assigned a unique cabinet ID so that it can be located and diagnosed by the operating system (SMAWrsb package). The value can lie between 0 and 63 and must be set with a DIP switch with eight switches, each of which repre-sents one digit of the selected binary number.

Upper switch setting corresponds to “1”.

4.2 Cabling

Ê First connect the signal cable on the RPS.

Ê Connect the mains output ports on the RPS to the devices being switched. Power cables connected to the switched mains output ports on the rear of the RPS can be fed into the rack from the rear through the channel provided for such cables on the upper side of the RPS, so that they can be laid together with the other cables connected to the RPS in an orderly fashion.

Ê Connect up the power supply for the RPS. The RPS is supplied by default with a power cable with a 16A industrial plug (CEE/IEC309).

Assigned box ID: dec=22 hex=16

Lower switch setting corresponds to “0”.

Switches 7 and 8 must be set to “0” at present.

V Please note that devices that are connected to the RPS may conduct increased leakage current (>3,5mA). In this case the use of a power-in cable with IEC320 plug is not allowed.

4.3 RSB login

The RSB in the RPS provides a menu system that has to be used for the initial configuration and can then be used again later for various configuration steps or for test purposes.

The SMAWrsb software package (available for SOLARIS and LINUX) must be installed for the following functions:

● To automatically switch individual channels (AC output ports and PC port) in high-availability configurations

● To configure master/slave configurations

● To configure poweron/poweroff delays

● To flash the RSB with new firmware

The RSB in the RPS can be accessed:

● via the Ethernet port of the RSB via telnet; the following default settings apply here for recently shipped RSBs:

IP 192.168.0.10 Port 3172 10/100 Mbit/s(former RSBs use port 2307)

● or via the serial port (V.24) of the RSB via a hyper terminal

VT100 38400/8N1 null modem cable

Once the RPS has been connected to the power supply, it can take some 90 s until the RSB is ready - the green RSB LED then remains lighting permanently.

After operational readiness Ctrl-J must be entered.

4.3.1 Telnet login

Ê Start the hyper terminal emulation with the following settings for the COM port:

● COM port parameter:

– baud rate: 38400

– data: 8 bit

– parity: none

– stop at: 1

– protocol: hardware

● Terminal emulation: VT100

● ASCII configuration: transmitted lines end with line feed

Ê Wait until the RSB responds (up to 10 s)

4.3.3 Initial LAN configuration of an RPS in a PRIMEPOWER system

Prerequisite: The RSB must have the firmware version 1.0.3.105 or higher.

Ê Connect a PC to the V.24 port of the RSB (e. g. with a 7488.00 or 55766.0x.0.16 cable).

Ê Set up the connection, as already described in Section “V.24 login”.

5 Configuration

5.1 Manpages

The SMAWrsb software package (available for SOLARIS and LINUX) must be installed in order to use the RPS. It provides the rsb and rsb_delay commands as well as the _rsbtab configuration file, the meaning and use of which are documented in the associated manpages rsb(1M), rps_delay(1M) and _rsbtab(4). You can show manpages on the screen by entering the following at shell level:

I If the power supply within an RPS configuration fails, the switched mains output ports of this RPS are powered off. After a power fail restart, the RPS automatically reconstitutes the switch setting of the mains output ports that existed at the occurrence of the failure (status storage in a non-volatile memory).

5.3 Redundant configuration > 16A

PRIMEPOWER650, PRIMEPOWER850 and PRIMEPOWER900 systems with PCI boxes must always be started or stopped including the I/O extensions con-nected to them. Since power consumption is above 16A for these PRIME-POWER models, the RPS must have a downstream high-current contactor. As these models from Fujitsu Siemens Computers are delivered with Dual Power Feed (redundant power connection with independent power supplies) as a stan-dard, a separate high-current contactor must be used for each of the two con-nections. Chapter 6 depicts, how the two high-current contactors are colocated in a 19“ rack.

The PRIMEPOWER Enterprise systems are also supplied with power via several power lines. To start and stop each system, an RPS with a downstream high-current contactor and a subdistributor in a separate connection rack must be provided. For a system with Dual Power Feed two high-current contactors

must be used in the connector rack.

A second RPS is not required for systems with Dual Power Feed. It is, however, recommended for RPS-availability reasons.

5.4 Power Distribution Rack with RPS and Load Break Switches

Recommended power distribution racks are available in different versions on request. They are used exclusively for power distribution for mainframe computer systems. The different types match the computer types and their individual configurations.

These power distribution racks have two separate power supplies (dual power feed) for distributing power to the enterprise systems. Load break switches at the mains power feed are intended only for disconnecting the whole power distributor. The number and type of sockets depend on the requirements of the computer system. They are distributed symmetrically over the two mains power feeds. The sockets are protected by a circuit breaker.

Power Distribution Rack with RPS and Load Break SwitchesConfiguration

The power distribution racks also accommodate the load break switches and the RPS for their control. Depending on the RPS application it must be decided which of the sockets are to be connected via the load break switches and which are not. For the "node elimination" feature, for example, all power feeds for the computers, including the associated I/O components, must be connected via switches, but not the power feeds for multihosted mass storage systems such as RAID systems.

The power distribution racks have the same mechanical structure and ambient and space requirements as the mainframe computer systems. They are commercial 19" racks. The operating side has a see-through door, 180° hinges, 3mm tempered safety glass, bolt with handle and an easy-grip handle with safety interlock. The connection side has a sheet steel door with bolt with handle and safety interlock. As far as possible, halogen-free material is used. All screwed parts have automatic potential equalization.

The rack has a three-part bottom plate with entry glands for the power feeds and

a sliding cable access plate on the operating side. The power feed cables and the supply lines for the computer systems are routed in from below through the double bottom. Therefore the cabinet must always be fastened to the floor so that lines and cables cannot be damaged by moving it. The power lines of the computers are routed in on the operating side, plugged in and fastened with clips.

The power distribution racks must be located close to the mainframe systems. The computers' connection cables must be plugged into the CEEform sockets provided. The exact assignment of the connections should be marked on the sockets.

5.5 Master RPS

A master RPS primarily has the task to send switch orders to slave and sub-enclosure RPSs via ethernet. Over and above the PRIMEPOWER Server can be powered on remotely via ethernet by an external master RPS that is connected to it (standby current supply available).

A master RPS, which can either be integrated in the server system (as a PCI-RSB because no PC (power control) adapter is available) or connected exter-nally, must be used in the following cases:

● For switching peripherals connected via fibre channel.

● For implementing the “last one turns out the lights” function in multihost configurations in which peripherals are shared. In this case, each of the participating server systems must be equipped with a master RPS.
