Touching photos show the true meaning of Memorial Day as men, women and children honor their loved ones who lost their lives while serving their country.

Memorial Day, which is celebrated on the last Monday of May, is marked in ceremonies and celebrations around the US to commemorate the men and women who died while in the military service.

In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries.
