Background

- Work Session on this topic was held on April 12, 2017

- ARS 22-125

- H. The judicial productivity credits for any justice court precinct shall not exceed twelve hundred credits. If the total judicial productivity credits of a justice court precinct exceed twelve hundred credits, the county board of supervisors shall create sufficient courts, or redraw the justice court precinct boundaries according to section 22-101, in order to reduce the judicial productivity credits for any precinct which exceeds that limit.

- We currently have 8 JP Precincts

Background - continued

- Justice Courts hear civil lawsuits when amount in dispute is $10,000 or less, including: evictions, landlord/tenant disputes; collection cases; consumer complaints against businesses; negligence actions (e.g. motor vehicle accidents); breach of contracts; orders of protection and injunctions against harassment (OP & IAH).

- Justice Courts hear criminal crimes that are misdemeanors under state law including: assault and battery; DUI; bad checks; violations of OP & IAH; underage drinking and shoplifting.

- Justice Courts hear small claims under $3,500

- Justice Courts hear every type of civil and criminal traffic violations
