R&B Music Magazine - My Music Magazine

Dec 15, 2014

For my music magazine, I had to look at the history of R&B music and the culture and the target audience so that I know what to include in my magazine and not to go off the target audience. Also, I had to talk about how R&B has changed over the years and how Mise En Scene is used in R&B Music.

  • 1. Task 1

2. It is a genre of popular African-American music thatoriginated in the 1940s Early 1950s, the term rhythm and blues was frequentlyapplied to blues records Starting in the mid-1950s, after this style of musiccontributed to the development of rock and roll, theterm "R&B" became used to refer to music styles thatdeveloped from and incorporated electric blues, aswell as gospel and soul music By the 1970s, rhythm and blues was used as a blanketterm for soul and funk 1980s, a newer style of R&B developed, becomingknown as "Contemporary R&B" 3. 1980s - With the transition from soul and disco toR&B, artists such as MJ were able to achievecrossover appeal in popular music which hadpreviously been dominated by white rockmusicians. 1990s - Though popular in the1980s, quiet stormhad remained a fixture in there cordings ofpopular artists such as Mariah Carey and WhitneyHouston in the dawn of the 1990s. 2000s - The continued popularity of contemporaryR&B is seen in the global success of establishedartists such as Beyonc and Usher, whose careersbegan in the late 1990s and continued in thedawn of the new millennium. 4. R&B music tends to target teenagers to youngadults, but some older generations like R&B too By listening to R&B music, you can also identifythe audience they aim at By looking at these singers dress sense and theway their body language is, you can tell whatpeople they aim their music at as teenagersrepresent themselves in a similar way with thebling and clothing. 5. Costume: Casual clothes such as:snapbacks, jeans, hoodies, polos, partyshirts. These are the types of clothes that R&Bsingers would be wearing with maybe somesmart depending on the song. Props: A lo of bling and plenty of jewellerylike: rings, necklaces. A lot of make up tooon women to make them stand out. Location: Places like a dance/night club ora big house or places with graffiti. 6. R&B has been portrayed through themedia in both a negative and positiveway. A negative way because of all the thingsthe artists get involved in outside of musici.e. drugs or Chris Brown and Rihannasincident gives R&B a bad name. But a positive way as they produce goodmusic and these artists sell millions ofrecords each month with their musicgetting into the top 10 of the charts! 7. Task 2 8. The colour of clothingand backgrounds theyare in are quite lightwhich suggest theirmusic isnt dull andcan put people ingood moods. The clothes thesesingers are wearingrelates to theirtarget audience asthese are the typesof clothes theywear. The tattoos some ofthese artists havemakes their audienceknow they are in theR&B genre of music asthis is the types ofthings they wouldhave. 9.,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bpcl=38897761&biw=1920&bih=986&wrapid=tlif135402042947110&safe=active&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Vra0UM7DI-XI0AWz4ICwDg#um=1&hl=en&safe=active&tbo=d&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=llil+wayne&oq=llil+wayne&gs_l=img.3..0i10l10.2314.2428.2.2937.,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=cea35d9fddf74a0b&bpcl=38897761&biw=1920&bih=986,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bpcl=38897761&biw=1920&bih=986&wrapid=tlif135402042947110&safe=active&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Vra0UM7DI-XI0AWz4ICwDg#um=1&hl=en&safe=active&tbo=d&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=usher&oq=usher&gs_l=img.3..0l10.16672.17156.4.17241.,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=cea35d9fddf74a0b&bpcl=38897761&biw=1920&bih=986,r:2,s:0,i:87&tx=71&ty=40,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bpcl=38897761&biw=1920&bih=986&wrapid=tlif135402042947110&safe=active&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Vra0UM7DI-XI0AWz4ICwDg#um=1&hl=en&safe=active&tbo=d&tbm=isch&spell=1&q=female+r%26b+singers&sa=X&ei=yLa0UKKQDsel0AXb2ICgBQ&ved=0CE8QvwUoAA&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=cea35d9fddf74a0b&bpcl=38897761&biw=1920&bih=986,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bpcl=38897761&biw=1920&bih=986&wrapid=tlif135402042947110&safe=active&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Vra0UM7DI-XI0AWz4ICwDg#um=1&hl=en&safe=active&tbo=d&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=rihanna&oq=rihanna&gs_l=img.3..0l10.10547.12403.3.12509.,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=cea35d9fddf74a0b&bpcl=38897761&biw=1920&bih=986,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bpcl=38897761&biw=1920&bih=986&wrapid=tlif135402042947110&safe=active&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Vra0UM7DI-XI0AWz4ICwDg#um=1&hl=en&safe=active&tbo=d&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=cassie&oq=cassie&gs_l=img.3..0l10.11629.12355.5.12464.,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=cea35d9fddf74a0b&bpcl=38897761&biw=1920&bih=986
