What is the RAWF Governor Generals and Lieutenants Governor Generals Cup?
The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair’s Governor Generals Cup became an annual tradition in 1922 when Canada’s premier indoor horse show, the Royal Horse Show, first opened. Since then the Governor General annually presents the Governor General’s and Lieutenant Governor’s cups to the year’s winners at the Royal Horse Show.
Lord Byng 12th Governor General of Canada form 1921 to 1926 established the Governor General’s Cup at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in 1922 while his wife, Lady Byng created a rock garden at Rideau Hall both of which are still in existance today. Lord Byng was well-known to Canadians before his appointment as Governor General. In 1916, during the First World War, he took command of the Canadian Army Corps on the western front. He gained his greatest glory with the Canadian victory at Vimy Ridge in April 1917, an historic military victory for Canada that inspired nationalism at home.
Each year the Canadian Sport Horse Association holds two RAWF cup qualifier shows for these prestigious classes at the Royal Winter Fair Horse Show. Only 20 entries from all of Canada will be chosen to attend the Royal Winter Fairs Governor General and Lieutenant Governor Generals Cup Classes.
The GG and the LG cup qualifier classes are open to horses that are registered three year old Canadian bred, foaled in Canada, suitable to become a Sport Horse – defined as a horse that is capable of excelling in the hunter, jumper, dressage or eventing disciplines. To be judged 50% on movement and 50% on conformation/type.
“Entries in the Governor General’s Cup and Lieutenant Governor General’s classes, are judged as to their suitability at becoming a sport horse assessing their potential for excellence in the Hunter, Jumper, Dressage or Eventing disciplines” http://www.gg.ca
The Canadian Sport Horse is the ultimate ‘made in Canada’ equine athlete, competing in dressage, jumper, eventing and hunter disciplines, locally, nationally and internationally. Canadian Sport Horses are ridden by some of the top names in the equestrian world,
including show jumpers Hugh Graham, Amy Millar and Yann Candele, eventers Rebecca Howard and Selena O’Hanlon and dressage riders Susanne Dutt-Roth and Esther Mortimer. As well as at the high performance ranks, you’ll find Canadian Sport Horses carrying their amateur riders to the winner’s circle at all levels of equestrian sport.
Some of the most prestigious performance horse stables in Canada, including King Ridge Stables, Lothlorien Farm, Millar Brooke and Zeidler Farm proudly breed Canadian Sport Horses. Some notable Canadian Sport Horses include: King Ridge’s grand prix jumpers Executive Privilege 3E and Distant Star 3E; 2011 Pan Am Canadian eventing team mount Foxwood High; up-and-coming jumpers Fine Time M, bred by Millar Brooke Farm and Ann Mathews, and the Zeidler Farm’s Lavender ZF and India Blue ZF.
Canadian Sport Horses competing internationally include Blithe Hill Riddle Master (2010 World Equestrian Games, and named to the 2012 Olympic Eventing team,; Foxwood High (2011 Pan Am Games, eventing); and Viva’s Veroveraar (2011 Pan Am, dressage). These horses are F1, or first generation Canadian Sport Horses, while F0 (foundation) horses continue to be important to Canadian Sport Horse breeding, such as Olympic gold medal show jumper stallion Hickstead and international grand prix dressage stallion, Lingh. Hickstead and Lingh are Platinum premium stallions; Platinum is the highest performance approval rating for the Canadian Sport Horse Association.
We also recognize the importance of mares to a performance breeding program. King Ridge Stables, Lothlorien Farm and the Zeidler Farm are breeders who exclusively use a small number of proven top performance mares in their breeding programs.
About the Canadian Sport Horse Association
The Canadian Sport Horse is Canada’s oldest indigenous sport horse breed. Established in 1926, the CSHA is incorporated under the Animal Pedigree Act and is the official registry of sport horses in Canada. The CSHA is also a member of the World Breeding Federation of Sport Horses and breed member affiliate of Equine Canada.
As an Evolving Breed, the CSHA allows breeders the flexibility to plan breeding programs based on genetics and market trends, while having the credibility of registering their horses with an internationally respected studbook.
