Mobile network operators can’t afford to go it
alone—at least when it comes to their future network
investment. 5G will require large numbers of base
stations and small cells to deliver better connectivity,
which could increase operators’ network investments
by up to 60 percent if they try to proceed alone,
according to McKinsey.
In recent years, operators have started working with
their competitors to reduce the total cost of ownership
through active sharing of their network infrastructure.
Active sharing goes beyond the sharing of passive
equipment (e.g., masts) to sharing of network elements
(e.g., spectrum, processing resources). This will be
especially important for 5G, as sharing network
equipment will deliver broader, more cost-effective
coverage.
One of the most commonly shared assets is the radio
access network (RAN), and for good reason—active
radio elements can account for up to 60 percent of
initial network investment. The addition of more 5G
base stations could increase the proportion of network
costs attributed to the RAN.
RAN Sharing allows operators to connect their
customers’ devices using the same RAN equipment,
while keeping core networks separate. To minimize the
cost of 5G network deployment while expanding their
coverage cost-effectively, operators will need to share
RAN to better manage the cost.
According to McKinsey, network sharing techniques
like RAN sharing have been able to reduce TCO by up
to 30 percent—and also present a massive revenue
opportunity for operators willing to share
their networks.
