Here, Yorke’s guitar has been replaced by echoing, ambient keyboard figures, but the essenal brooding beauty of the original remains, a love song that sounds like a threat. Closing with a song that has been knocking around for over 20 years may imply a lack of inspiraon, but actually I suspect Radiohead are a band with the vision and paence to wait for the right framework for this lile masterpiece. The melodic sweetness and somemes gentle ambience of Moon Shaped Pool may represent Radiohead at their least bloodthirsty and most accessible, but there are depths and riches here to suggest a work of total self- assurance. Radiohead: A Moon Shaped Pool album review: ‘you’ll love it more with every listen’

Radiohead have always had a way with a lullaby. Now they have produced an entire album of the kind of songs that could lull you into sleep, but may give you nightmares.

The driving momentum of first single Burn the Witch may have implied something more full-blooded, but it turns out their ninth album takes its cues from the moody drift of second track Daydreaming, a somnambulant stumble through half-waking

dreamscapes where sounds and images collide but never quite come into focus.

A Moon Shaped Pool turns out to be Radiohead’s most melodically accessible collection, almost meditative in its ethereal mid-tempo loveliness, yet shot through with the kind of edgy details that never quite let a listener relax. It is chill-out music to put your nerves on edge.

On A Moon Shaped Pool they give ballads full sway, closing the album with the exquisitely gorgeous True Love Waits, a song that has featured in their sets since 1995 and was previously released as a live solo acoustic version on an EP in 2001. Here, Yorke’s guitar has been replaced by echoing,

ambient keyboard figures, but the essential brooding beauty of the original remains, a love song that sounds like a threat.

Closing with a song that has been knocking around for over 20 years may imply a lack of inspiration, but actually I suspect Radiohead are a band with the vision and patience to wait for the right framework for this little masterpiece.

The melodic sweetness and sometimes gentle ambience of Moon Shaped Pool may represent Radiohead at their least bloodthirsty and most accessible, but there are depths and riches here to suggest a work of total self-assurance.

It is an album you could grow to love more with every listen.

Dreamers

Beyond the point

Where the sun comes

And it’s too late

You

This goes

Beyond you

By a window

Beyond me

Through

We are

Of no return (repeated)

The white room

They never learn (repeated)
