Preventing, Avoiding, and Managing Surgical Complications in Dental Implant Therapy

Presented by Louie Al-Faraje, DDS

Complications associated with implant surgery can have a devastating effect on the outcome or the prognosis of dental implant treatment. This 1-day seminar will focus on how to identify, avoid, and successfully manage a diverse range of potential surgical implant complications. At the end of this seminar, participants will have a better understanding of the etiology, prevention, and management of a number of complications related to surgical implant therapy.

Topics include:• Inadequate vertical and horizontal restorative space• Incorrect angulations (buccolingual and mesiodistal)• Malalignment• Nerve injury• Curved extraction socket• Retained root tips at the insertion site• Implant fracture• Inadequate initial stability/loose implant• Bone loss during the healing period/thread exposure• Implant mobility during second-stage surgery

About the speakerLouie Al-Faraje, DDS, is a California Dental Board–registered continuing education provider and founder of the California Implant Institute. He is also the author of Surgical Complications in Oral Implantology: Etiology, Prevention, and Management (Quintessence, 2011).

Part I. Considerations for Treating Patients on Bisphosphonate Therapy

Presented by Robert E. Marx, DDS

Bisphosphonates, as well as some new “antiresorptive” drugs, are known to cause exposed necrotic bone in the jaws. Their common mechanism of action is impairment or death of osteoclasts that remodel and renew bone. This session will distinguish between all of the current drugs on the market and their delivery (intravenous, subcutaneous, or oral) related to severity, prevention protocols, treatment protocols, and how they may impact dental treatment including dental implants, occlusal loading, and periodontal and oral surgical procedures.

Part II. Bone Grafting for Ridge Augmentation and Jaw Defects: Using BMP in Today’s Dental Practice

Presented by Robert E. Marx, DDS

Today, dental practitioners have many bone-grafting materials available to them, including cell products, recombinant proteins, allogeneic bone, xenogeneic bone, and synthetics, among others. Each may be useful in limited circumstances or in select indications, and each regenerates bone at different rates and to different degrees. It is prudent for the clinician to understand the contribution of each of the commonly used graft materials. This session will focus on tissue-engineering principles specifi c to the use of rhBMP to replace autogenous bone grafting.

CE Credit: 5 hours

About the speakerRobert E. Marx, DDS, is chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. A well-known educator, researcher, and innovative surgeon, he has developed new concepts and treatments for pathologies of the oral and maxillofacial area as well as new techniques in reconstructive surgery. Among other accomplish-ments, he pioneered the clinical applications of rhBMP and stem cell use and was the fi rst to identify what is now known worldwide as bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the jaws.
