QUESTION 2

Chloe GregsonHow effective is the combination of your main products and ancillary texts?

What is a brand? A brand is different than a product, which is what most

people think it is. We have needed brands for many, many years, the need for brands actually came from the age of mass production.

A brand can take many forms; it can either be a sign, symbol, colour combination or a slogan and is used to distinguish a product and their company.

A brand also helps each company become famous and known all over the market.

Famous brands are known throughout the world because they have been produced and sold over as large geographical area, due to doing so, they are recognised in many countries.

EXAMPLES OF KNOWN BRANDS WITHIN THE MARKET THESE DAYS:

Page 3: Q2-chloe

Some famous brands:Most people will recognise half of these brands, if not all of them. This is because of the way they have been produced. They have been produced brightly coloured and large so that people can spot them from far away. The use of these colours and strong vibrant images helps the company attract possibly knew buyers into their brand also, which is a major advantage to companies these days, as they are constantly fighting for new customers as the market is packed with competition.

Example of brand images: These two pictures are album covers of Lady

Gaga’s latest albums. As you can see her brand image is very quirky and unexpected.

As she is very different from every other artist within her genre, she stands our for the right ways. This is mainly because of her brand image. Without the brand image she has got, she wouldn’t be known for her outrageously over the top outfits and make-up.

Personally I would say that this brand image for Lady Gaga works very well as it inspires people to be an individual and this is exactly what she wants to come across to her audience and fans.

GAGA’S BRAND IMAGE:- Quirky - Unique- Inspiring- Original

Why do brands work?

Brands work because each and every brand is different, because of this they offer us some sort of guarantee, a set of values which we tend to associate with the brand image.

Also, brands make a product stand out from another one. The producers of each brand wants to make each brand different to that it turns each product into something unique.

Why is branding important? (especially to the music industry) Branding is very important to the

music industry for many reasons. Audiences can relate to these brands

and because of some brands is the reason people like the bands and buy material by them. It is very essential that the artists creates a brand image so that they stand out from their competition.

Page 8: Q2-chloe

Three main focuses of a brand image:

Using the same colours throughout their logo, cd

covers, music videos. A constant brand image

A constant theme which will run throughout all of their

products they produce.

Page 9: Q2-chloe

What is your brand image?

A brand image is one of the main focuses of a very successful company. Many artists focus on making their

brand image one which is very original so that that it enables them to gain fans instantly for being unique. As previous,

Lady Gaga has a strong brand image but so do many artists. Before creating our music video, myself and my group came

up with a brand image for out protagonist. As we named her ‘Lottie’ we thought that we would make our bran image:

QUIRKYCUTE

UNIQUE

When making our print work, we

thought that we should make sure

that our brand image reflect

these.

Page 10: Q2-chloe

What is your brand image: Our brand image, hopefully makes our artist very unique so

that she stands out from the rest of the artists. We feel as a group that we have done this as on our CD covers you can not see her face on one of them, which makes her a lot more original than artists in the charts these days.

- Also we have used the same ethos style throughout our video and ancillary tasks

which makes her brand image a lot stronger. The colours we used were; red,

yellow, purple.

Personally I think because you can not

see her face, it enables her to have a

sense of mystery about her as an artist.

Page 11: Q2-chloe

What is your brand image: We researched many different artists and looked at

their videos to become inspired by them. Because as a group we decided to make our video based on the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme, we looked at music videos which go along them lines also, or just have a flash of the theme during the sequence.

Artists we found

who do this sort of theme

within their music videos are:

1) Jessie J

2) Example

3) Florence and The Machine

Page 12: Q2-chloe

What is your brand image: To create our brand image as a group we had

to decide on our mise en scene. We had to think about our props/locations/actors/studio ideas.

For our props we used animal masks, ribbon, cakes, instruments and many more

For our locations we used two different parks For our actor we used Sarah, who is in my

group

Page 13: Q2-chloe

Mise en scene: Mise en scene was important as we wanted to make sure

that we portrayed our artist in the right things, i.e; clothing and make up etc.

Sarah, or as we named her Lottie, she is wearing a white dress, this white dress was our main item of clothing whilst shooting our video and also taking our pictures for our ancillary task. The colour white has connotations of innocence, which is what we wanted her to come across as it fits in with our video - as animals are chasing her through the woods, it makes us feel sorry for her as she comes across all innocent and fragile through the mise en scene used.

In addition to this, we did not use striking makeup as we felt that it was not necessary, as we thought the animals masks would be one of the main focuses for our audience.

Page 15: Q2-chloe

Pushing boundaries:

We pushed a lot of boundaries whilst creating our video and ancillary tasks.

On our ancillary tasks one of the boundaries we pushed/broke was that the artist’s face was not on show on some of our pictures. Therefore it was hard to see if it was actually the main artist in these shots. We thought that it would add a sense of mystery which is what we were aiming for during our research and planning, as pushing boundaries got more attention, rather than your artist blending in with the crowd and maybe not getting recognised as much as he/she should be.

Page 16: Q2-chloe

Pushing Boundaries cont..

These pictures above show what I was stating in the previous slide about our artist being covered up. You do not normally get this within our genre that much, this is one of the reasons why we choose to do this. It will get spotted more from viewers as it will not be like any other CD covers, released posters etc.
