Here at Spring Creek I’ve been working at genetic improvement for over 40 years. The strength of my operation is in the cow herd. I’ve always known the type of cattle I’ve wanted to raise. Mine has been a very hands-on operation: I breed, feed, calve, and do the culling. People often ask about our family; Sharon and I are very proud of them. Dan and Olga are both Industrial Systems Engineers. Dan has invented his version of the vertical lift pump jack; his new company is called IJack Technologies. At this time Olga’s favorite role is that of Mom to Vivian Rose, and they will welcome their second child this summer. Sean and Simina live in Calgary. Sean has a Business Degree, a CFA, and is working on an MBA while working for Enmax. His wife Simina is an associate with Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer LLP. Our daughter Lauren has a shiny new Business Degree from the U of S. She also lives in Calgary where she is an HR Advisor for Trinidad Drilling. My mother Frances continues to be amazingly well for having turned 95 in December.

Sharon and I would like to thank everyone who has supported us through the years. This is a great industry and we couldn’t imagine having raised our family anywhere other than here on the ranch, which has been home to the McCarthy family since the 1890’s. As sit down to write this, it does fi nally feel like we are closing the chapter on our purebred operation at BlackSand. There is no doubt we have had that empty feeling the last few weeks with the cows and heifers gone and sure have missed seeing the baby calves born. It is this time of year that was always the most exciting time of the year for us to see the next generation and future of the operation. The fl ip side to this though is that we have probably never spent more time with our yearling bulls than we have in the last two months. They are a super quite group and there are three or four we could probably saddle and ride around as they are quite as house cats with the extra attention they have received...

We would like to extend another big Thank You to those who showed interest, bid and bought at our dispersal sale in December. We are still digesting and absorbing the day and outcome as it was far beyond expectations. When you lay your hard work and dedication to building a foundation herd on the line, in a take them or leave them setting, it can be humbling when the outcome was what it was. We wish the best for each and every purchase and female moving forward and hope they will bring you the success and gratifi cation they brought us over the years. I apologize up front when I continue to call and check in on how things are going as we are interested in knowing how they are turning out and want to know what that exciting next generation is looking like!

We feel our 2014 bull calf crop is as good as we have ever offered and is a true testament to the cow herd as there were very few that didn’t make the cut. This is probably as diversifi ed offering as we have had as well with a larger group of red bulls, a big offering of half bloods and a few top end angus bulls to mould into the industry leading quality of bulls that SpringCreek has always brought forth to make the “In Pursuit of Perfection Bull Sale” a feature event of the spring bull season.

It has been said before and we will say once again, as we don’t fully appreciate the breeding potential of a bull until his daughters reach maturity. I think we are approaching that point with “Lotto” as his fi rst daughters are calving out and look to be foundation females moving forward. Our Lotto heifers went across the country to top herds and will leave their mark in the industry. Owning a Lotto son should prove to be wise investment raised by what is now determined as any one of our foundation females sired by MBJ 104S or MBJ 56U. We now fully appreciate these sires’ individual value to the industry as their daughters mature. These Lotto combinations on these females will be dynamic. Our smaller Simmental sire groups are also impressive and we expect them to offer defi ned value to the cattle industry.

We have never raised half blood bulls as strong as our RRAR Upward 35Z sons out of our fi rst calf Simmental heifers. We have maybe never raised a sire group of bulls as strong as this offering. They are truly special and impressive with their birth to yearling growth. Check out RRAR 35Z (CANAN1385926) EPD’s on the CSA website. There may not be a bull with a better set of EPD’s currently. You will not go wrong with having one of these sons in your arsenal. Their paternal sisters sold right at the top with the purebred heifer calves in the dispersal. We are very proud of the three embryos Angus bulls from the heart of the Peak Dot herd. They fi t in right at the top of our bull offering, and expect them to make a future impact!

IPOP (In Pursuit of Perfection) Bull Sale Customer Care Winter Feeding ProgramThe objective of this program is to work with our customers to foster the yearling bull through the most critical year of his life -- the first winter after his inaugural breeding season. In the case of our sale, most of these bulls are yearling bulls. The challenge for many producers, but not all, is where do you put them? They are usually a nuisance and if you put them with the mature bulls they never do as well. Tying up a pen or field to feed just a few animals becomes a challenge as well.The program is built on a sliding scale which works off the purchase price of the bull or bull average (multiple bulls). IPOP Bull Sale will charge the customer the amount left owing on the feeding program in that purchase bracket. If a purchase price is between a trigger point, it will be rounded down. Based on industry feedback the wintering of a yearling bull will be $700 +/- per head. The cost for the feeding program will be charged on delivery of the bull in the fall, based on the range you fall into for that bull or group of bulls, or no charge at all! IPOP Bull Sale will deal with the feeding co-operator on complete feeding program costing.The sign up for this program will be on sale day or shortly after the spring IPOP Bull Sale to allow time to coordinate the winter program. If the customer does not wish to utilize this support tool then there will be no credit given for feeding their own bulls. The Wintering Program will start in mid October and run to April 1st. If additional time is required by the customer on either side of this program (fall or extended spring) it will be at the customer’s expense and at the convenience of the feeding cooperator. All bull deliveries in the fall will be cordinated into a 3-4 day window.

IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty”The goal of this program is again to work with our customers in sharing the risk on bulls that will not work based on factors out of their control. We also want to take more responsibility in seeing a bull through to maturity and ensuring things like feet and legs stand up. A bull purchase is a major investment not just for the future of your herd but in the expectation of a longer productive life of the animal. We also assume there is risk past year one, even though most bulls are only insured in their first year of service. We want to work with our customers through to maturity. The time your bull spends in the Winter Feeding Program will be included in this warranty. If the IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty” is initiated, it will be paid out in the form of a credit towards the purchase of a bull in the subsequent year’s sale. I like many of the bulls in this red pen, but if I had to pick one, I would pick this ‘Lotto’ son. It’s not surprising that you find ‘Liner 56U’ on the bottom side of his pedigree; they sure know how to raise the good ones. His EPDs are awesome with a very moderate birth weight. Every single son of 33P has been a herd bull and “All on Red” is one of her best. She now resides at Grant Lodge Farms and has raised many of our high selling bulls over the years. 79B is a soggy heavy made bull at a young age that will be a front pasture animal when mature. An end of February calf that has rests right near the top of our pen.

Freemont has as much prepotency as any we will offer in our final sale. He doesn’t stand out in the pen, meaning he is not out of place in a pen with bulls three and four months older than him. 95B has an ideal build with extra top and hip with a beatiful hair coat all while be a consideration as a calving ease bull. Here is a prospect that I have had my eye on all summer. He is very near the top end for performance in his large contemporary group. There aren’t many ‘56U’ sons around and here’s one that will work. He is moderately made with good thickness. He has a very nice set of EPDs and a strong cow family to go with it. His maternal grand dam raised the twins 79B and 80B. His gestation was 285 days. Homozygous polled, heterozygous black.

Commodity is simply an outstanding individual that will breed true to make herdsires and front pasture replacement females. 56U daughters averaged $13,000 in our disperal and will all go on to be foundation females in their new homes. 39B’s mother that goes back to the foundation Honey Dew cow, and sold as a high seller to Robb Farms for $13,000. His dam is a very attractive cow from the ‘B Gold’ cow family. Many are looking for these baldy quality herd sires and you won’t find many better than 100B. Buy them when you find them. He had a low gestation of 276 days. Homozygous polled.

This thick, deep bodied ‘Kodiak’ youngster came out of a two year old dam at 76 lbs and at 273 days. She has a nice, tidy udder. His EPDs show a combination of calving ease and growth.

This herd sire prospect has an outstanding set of EPDs for calving and performance and a pedigree to match. His sire was our high selling Angus bull two years ago to Black Sand and Soderglen and his calves, whether on Angus or Simmental, are outstanding. Here is an interesting pedigree that is a little different. The combination resulted in a very muscular and high performing prospect. His dam is very quiet and his sire is noted for leaving tremendous feet on his progeny. His gestation was 272 days. Take a good look here.

Here is a very attractive package with a great pedigree and EPDs. His dam is a full sister to the dam of the Black Sand/Soderglen bull and is one of my best cows. ‘Motive’ is known for calving ease, short gestations (271 days in this case), and attractive cattle.

16B is probably my deepest-bodied bull, and yet he is really an attractive package. He is streamlined up front with lots of rib, guts and nuts. He has some great ones in his pedigree: ‘Sitz Upward’, ‘Final Answer’ and ‘KMK Alliance’. Retaining 100 doses of ‘in herd use’ semen.

‘Tibbie 877P’ has left a muscular, growthy bull that looks a lot like her daughter’s son (RRAR 11B). There is definitely some meat and performance in this cow family. He came at 80 lbs and 275 days.

This is a full sib on paper to RRAR 12B. 23B came at 273 days and 70 lbs. I have decided to keep some semen on the other one, but who knows down the road which one will come out on top. You be the judge. His ‘Tiger’ dam also came in an embryo from MVF and she is a beauty!

This ‘Upshot’ son has a little less frame, but is he ever nicely made! He will definitely catch your eye. His dam is a beautiful package, and her good looking son sold to Raymond Callioux of Mayerthorpe, AB in last year’s sale. He would work in the heifer pen.
