Cats are natural athletes (ok, curled up there onyour sofa, he might not look like it!), but yes, theirbodies were designed to jump, climb and balance.Behaviour expert John Bradshaw explains thephysicality of cats with a fascinating insight intowhat makes them so agile. For a fine example offeline agility, read about Boat Cat Bob whos own-er Helen Lewis tells us how he can walk a narrowplank from shore to get back on board his float-

    ing home!

Now, is your cat shy? If so, you are not alone andthis month behaviourist Jon Bowen offers lots ofreally good practical advice on how to cope witha cat who hides from visitors.

Reader Karen OBrien tells us how Eddie Izzardshilarious stories about cats inspired to abandonher feline phobias and acquire two gorgeous Bur-mese cats.

Patchs story of recovery from horrific injurieswhile caring for her kittens proves how coura-geous cats can be, but also highlights the team-work of charities working closely with the veter-inary profession.

    WHO| SPECIAL GUEST

Bub is a very special one of a kind critter. More specifically, she is the mostamazing cat on the planet. Discovered as the runt of a healthy feral litter ina tool shed in rural Indiana, she was taken in as a rescue when it was clearthat she would require special care. Bub was born with a multitude of genet-ic anomalies which all add up to one of natures happiest accidents.

She is a perma-kitten, which means she will stay kittenw sized and maintain

kitten-like features her entire life. She also has an extreme case of dwarf-ism, which means her limbs are disproportionately small relative to the restof her body and she has some difficulty moving around. She has very short, stubby legs and a weird, long, serpent-like body. Her lower jaw is significant-ly shorter than her upper jaw, and her teeth never grew in which is why hertongue is always hanging around. Dont worry, Bub has a very healthy appe-tite and eats dry and wet food with no problems. Additionally, Bub is a poly-dactyl cat, meaning she has extra toes, and in her case, one extra toe on all ofher four paws. Her front paws each have two opposable thumbs. And thenof course there are her big, bulging, wonder-filled green eyes. Some thinkshe can see into the future with those things. Despite her weird looks andnumerous deformities, Bub is a healthy, happy cat living in the care of her

dude who treats her like a queen.

She is unlike any other cat in so many ways that some believe that she mightactually be from outer space. Beyond her unique looks, she has a remarka-ble demeanor and attitude that is unlike any other cat.

She loves to travel, and sits on her dudes lap in cabs, subways, planes andeven his shoulder as he walks around outside. Her dude owns four otherwonderful adopted cats, but would never dream of even taking them for acar ride, as they would lose their minds. But Bub shes used to space travel,so planes are no big deal.

Beyond being overwhelmingly cute, exceptionally smart and painfully witty,Bub is an advocate for homeless and special needs pets all over the universe.Since before she was a star she has made it a point to spread a message ofpositivity. She proves that being different is better and she encourages theadoption of pets and helping those less fortunate. o date Lil Bub has direct-ly raised more than $60,000 for various charities through her online storeand meet-and-greets at animal shelters all of the country while spreadingawareness about the importance of adoption, and spaying and neutering

    your pets.

    INTERVIEW| SPECIAL GUEST

For the type of person who requires an infusionof cute Internet cats to get through the workday,Lil Bub needs no introduction. Te mega-ador-

able permakitten from Bloomington, Indianahas blossomed from an Internet curiosity to abonafide media property: in September alone, shes been the subject of a feature-length Vicedocumentary, Lil Bub & Friendz; released herfirst tome, Lil Bubs Lil Book; and commenced atalk show, Lil Bubs Big Show.

We met Bub and her owner, Mike Bridavsky,at the Yerba Buena Gardens between stops ontheir busy San Francisco press tour. Bridavskywas, as he himself admits, absolutely exhausted,

but Bub was in good spirits, romping across thegrass for the photos above. After Bub had beenre-installed in her cat carrier, we talked to Bri-davsky about the unusual existence of having acelebrity pet..

Is this your first time in San Francisco? What doyou think so far?Its great. I love the weather. I know we got lucky, but the weather has been especially spectacularso far.

What kind of events have you guys been doing?A lot. We did book signings... the first was atSpoke Art Gallery, and after that there was anart exhibit that was all Bub paintings, from 60internationally renowned artists. It was one ofthe coolest things I think Ive ever been a part of.Ten yesterday, we did a meet-and-greet at theRickshaw Stop with Burger Records, who are bigfans of Bub. We did a book signing there, thenthey screened the documentary. And then afterthat, there was a rock show...in honor of my cat.[Laughs a lot.]

Tats a pretty good feeling, I imagine. Its all a pretty good feeling, but Im so exhaustedright now. Tats the only thing.

Your day job is owning a recording studio. Howmuch time have you been able to dedicate tothat, given the fame of your cat?

Not much. Ive hired a guy to pick up the slackfor me. But thats still what I do...well, every nowand then, at least.

Whats the craziest reaction people have hadupon meeting Bub?

People cry a lot, but one woman actually fell toher knees sobbing. At every meet-and-greet, atleast one person cries; yesterday, there was a

young guy, like a hardcore kid, who started cry-ing. Its actually pretty common.

Do they ever explain to you why theyre in tears?I dont think an explanation is needed. Tey feelcomfortable crying around her. Teyre tears ofhappiness, of course. But were actually goingto cut down on them...the events for the publicare cool, but its a little intense for me and foreveryone: Bub, the people working, the peoplewaiting for three hours in line. Its been fun, but Ithink were going to cool it for a while.

How is traveling for Bub? Can she handle it prettywell?

Its actually really good for her. Shes really spryand active when we travel. [As weve been talk-ing, Bub has been attempting to climb out of hercarrier.] Tis is new for her, this kind of mobility. Were doing a new treatment, and weve learnedmore about her disease, which is very rare. Wetravel a lot, and Ive always notice that wheneverwe travel, she does better.

What is it about her bones that make it hard forher to walk?

Its called osteopetrosis - not osteoporosis, os-

teopetrosis. Her bones become more dense, twisted, and deformed as she gets older; shealmost has no marrow cavity, and they contin-ually get bigger and more deformed. Tat was

We found out that the vibrations from driving and flying arevery good for her bones; it helps these certain cells break down, which dont break down naturally, like they do in most cats.

Tats why shes able to stand upright, and she was runningaround at the last place we were at, which is the first time thatshappened since she was three months old.

what was starting to limit her mobility, andmade her so awkward. Shes the only cat in re-corded history to be born with this disease...its

exceptionally rare in any species. [Gestures toclimbing Bub.] Tis was absolutely unheard offor her only three months ago. Climbing out ofher carrier is insane.

Bub was born feral. How did she come to be yours?

My friends mom found her in her tool shedwhen she was about one week old, and saw thatshe needed special care, or she wouldnt survive. She bottle-fed her until about eight weeks, andthats when my friend sent me a photo of her as akitten. I was like, I have to meet this cat. I took

her home immediately. I mean, shes the mostamazing animal in the world.

Does she have to eat special food? She has to eat prescription food right now, forurinary tract health- she had crystals in herbladder. But before that, she just ate regularfood. And thats when my friend sent me a photo.

So, you guys just had a big day recently.Yeah, September 3rd was Good Job Bub Day,and we released the book, the documentary, and

our talk show all at the same time.

    INTERVIEW| SPECIAL GUEST

How do you put the talk show together? I assumeyou record the interviews separately. Each ones different, the first one [with Whoopi

Goldberg] was just a Skype interview, but someof them are more involved: we actually meet upwith the guest, and they interact.

How did that get started?Well, anything we do, people come to us. I nev-er seek out anything - thats kind of been myrule from the beginning. When they came to us,I wasnt sure, and I agreed to do it if I had fullcreative freedom, full control over everything, and got to choose who I worked with. And theysaid yes, which is awesome. It doesnt work that

way normally, but when you have a Bub, you getwhat you want. My friend Mark Pallman and Icreated the concept, I write it, and hes the direc-tor and producer. Hes awesome: he also helpedwith the book, weve been writing music, andweve played music and been on tour togetherin the past, so hes a very close friend.

Given that you already have a recording studio, will there be Bub music at some point?Weve talked about it...for fun, of course. [Bubtries to break free to run across the grass.] Bub,

I know, it looks fun, but you have to stay herenow. [o us.] Now that shes capable of running,oh man...

You recently were the subject of a Buzzfeed listiclethat was a tribute to your attractiveness. Have youfound love through the Bub project? No. I dont really have time, its like shes my girl-friend. [Laughs.] Its weird...I get hit on by girls, because I have a famous cat, but that doesnt re-ally equate to love, I dont think.

Do you ever get tired of being Lil Bubs dad?Like, personally? No, shes awesome. But publi-cally...yeah, its a little weird. I tried to stay out ofit for a long time, but once they started filmingthe documentary, and people asked us if wedappear on shows, I had to. I think its weird get-ting noticed for being the owner of a cat.

Grumpy Cat became an internet sensation after her photowas posted on Reddit on September 22, 2012. It was suggest-ed that the original photo was photoshopped, so we posted afew videos on Youube. Te videos went viral and her popu-larity has continued to increase!

We arent exactly sure about Grumpy Cats breed; but shelooks nothing like her mother or father. She looks similar toa Ragdoll or Showshoe; but there have never been any of thatbreed around the house. Her mom is a calico domestic shorthair cat and her father has grey and white stripes. (Tough Isuppose there could be a different father, promiscuous cats

    you know).

ardar Sauce visites the vet regularly and she has a clean billof health. Her petite size and famous face is likely due to felinedwarfism and her rear end wobbles a bit when she walks due tothis; otherwise she is a perfect little kitty! She is not a munchkincat and was not bred purposefully from other munchkin cats. Also, a quick note on Grumpy Cats wellbeing. We take greatcare of ardar Sauce; 99% of the time she is a normal kitty. She plays, hides, and acts as cats act. She isnt in front of acamera all of the time like many people perceive. We onlytake photos sets once every week or so and on the few occa-

sions where we have met with the media or licensed partnerswe ensure the sessions are short and that she isnt handled bymany people. ardar Sauce is a member of the family beforeanything else!

    THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

    Despite its rising

popularity, the Bengalis definitely not a catfor everyone. Tey farebest with experiencedcat owners willing todevote time each dayfor interaction. Bengalsdemand attention. Teyare quite talkative, capableof making a wide range ofvocalizations from chirpsand chortles to squeaks

and howls. Tey love toplay long games of fetch, walk on leashes and play inwater dishes and bathtubs.

Te Bengal may look like a wild cat, but breed-ers insist that the Bengal is as lovably friendly anddocile as any full-blooded domestic cat. Fanciers

describe Bengals as playful, gregarious, and ener-getic cats that have a generous dose of feline curi-osity and that want to be involved with their fam-ily. Not intimidated by water, they will sometimes

join their family for a swim, as long as its on theirterms.

Although show-quality cats must be four genera-tions away (F4) from the leopard cat to be shown, previous generations of Bengals are placed aspets; therefore, its important to know what youregetting when acquiring a Bengal. Before getting a

second generation (F2) or third generation (F3)Bengal, be sure that the cat is free of tempera-ment problems.

Te Bengals spots are aligned horizontally ratherthan in random or tabby configuration. Rosettesformed in a part-circle around a redder center isthe preferred look. Emphasis is put on the con-trast between the spots and the background color;the edges should be sharp and pattern distinct fora show-quality cat. In the marbled pattern, themarkings are derived from the classic tabby gene,

but the overall look is random, giving the impres-sion of marble.

Bengals often possess a glitter gene that givesthe fur an iridescent glow, as if covered with warmfrost. Tree recessive coat variations have beendeveloped: the snow leopard, the marbled, andthe snow marbled. Tese types are still quite rare.

    THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

    Te Sphynx may be

hairless, but they are nothypoallergenic. Teirdander is capable ofevoking allergic reactionsin people who have catallergies.

Be aware that its bodyis highly susceptible tosunburn. Tis breed isregarded to be very robustwith few health or genetic

    problems.

When the first matings of the breed occurred, breeders discovered that the Sphynxs lack of hairis governed by a recessive gene. It takes two cop-

ies of the gene for the trait to express itself and,if each parent has only one copy of the hairlessgene, the number of hairless kittens in any litteris approximately one in four. Tis makes estab-lishing a large gene pool more difficult. Howev-er, it was also discovered that the hairless gene isan incomplete dominant over the gene governingthe Devon Rexs wavy coat. Crosses between theSphynx, Devon Rex, and the American Shorthairwidened the gene pool.

Te Sphynx only appears hairless, its skin, or parts

of it, is covered with a fine, almost imperceptiblevestigial covering of down that gives the skin thetexture of chamois. One would expect a hairlesscat to produce no symptoms in the cat-allergic,but this is not the case. Te Sphynx considerate-ly refrains from shedding all over your couch, butcan still make you sneeze. It is not the hair itselfthat causes the allergic reaction, but rather an al-lergenic protein called Fel d1 secreted via salivaand sebaceous glands. Sphynxes produce this se-cretion just as all cats do; they just dont depositallergen-laced hair all over the place.

Sphynxes also require grooming. Tey must beregularly bathed to remove collections of oily se-baceous secretions on the skin. Tese secretionsare normal; its just that Sphynxes dont have hairto absorb them. Allowed to collect, these oils cancause skin problems.

GRUMPY CAT IS NOW A DRINK:INTRODUCING THE GRUMPUCCINO. MICHAEL LEAVERTON

Grumpy Cat is coming out with a coffee bever-age. Yep, youre seeing right. Tats the first-everGrumpuccino, and not, astonishingly, a cat-puc-cino. Obviously the makers knew full well theycould have called it a cat-puccino and chose notto, for their own foolish reasons. Its sort of hos-tile decision, really. I mean, they were so close toallowing us to finally tell our waiters, Ill have a

cat-puccino, please! and really mean it, and theyripped it away from us.

Back to this drink, which will be available Aug. 7according to the websit: the tagline is, Its awful-ly good, which does not sound like somethingGrumpy Cat would say at all. Of course, GrumpyCat probably just said, Its awful but then some-one added a few consonants and vowels and herewe are, staring down the barrel of a Grumpy Catproduct launch.

EDDIE THE RESCUEDHIMALAYAN MIX SHOWSHOW TO GIVE FACE.Eddie is another reverse vam-pire cat rescued from a retired

    breeder before being adopted.

    LIZ ACOSTA

I'd like you to meet Eddie. Eddie, likeso many smoosh-faced purebredcats, has special teeth. Teir teethcontain magical properties that al-low these cats to command you withtheir unique cuteness.

But look! You can't breed magic in-to a cat. Some cats are more magi-cal than others, each with their ownstrain of magic, and it's just not coolto try to force the magic. 'Cause, yousee, while you and I appreciate aface like Eddie's, not everyone feelsthe same way. And often these cats'magical teeth are seen as imperfec-tions, and then nobody wants them, and that sucks!

Eddie here came with a group ofother cats from a "retired breed-er" via the DFW Purebred Rescue.Okay, I don't know about you, butwhen I hear "retired breeder," I archone eyebrow into the fine shape ofskepticism. A couple of the oth-er rescued cats ended up going tothe Rainbow Bridge, but Eddie sur-vived. Could it be that Eddie's fabu-lous teeth are the result of someone

trying to breed magic without beingresponsible about it? Watch my eye-brow arch again.

WINE FOR CATS?ITS A REAL THING.

    PHILLIP MLYNAR

I dream of a day when I can takemy cat to the bar. But while mostbars are still stuck in the old-fash-ioned mentality of allowing dogs asthey only animal on their premises, one canny Japanese company has

brought my reverie closer to frui-tion with the invention of cat wine.Yep, wine that you can serve to yourcats now exists! First, the bad news:According to reports from peoplewho are able to translate the B&HLifes website, the company behindthe cat wine, the tipple is totally al-cohol-free. However, it is claimedto contain the juice from Cabernetgrapes mixed with traces of catnip. In better news, the libation goes by

the cat-tastic name of Nyan NyanNouveau, so-called for the noise acat is said to make when it meows. When it goes on sale, cat wine willretail for around four bucks a bottlebut there will only be one thousandof them produced for the first run.

RARE, BUT HEALTHY TWO-FACEDKITTEN BORN IN OREGON.

    KELLI BENDER

Even with an extra set of eyes, the unusual felinefound herself lost in our big world shortly afterbirth. Stephanie Durkee and her children discov-ered the kitten wandering close to her home, re-

    jected by its mother.

"Te kids actually found them and came in and

said, 'Mom, there's a kitty with two heads,' and Isaid, 'I think you guys are just tired, you're crazy, that doesn't happen,'" Durkee explained to Met-ro UK.

Seeing that the newborn would need extra help,Durkee and her family took the cat in and namedher Duecy. Worried about what two heads meantfor Duecy's one body, Durkee took the cat to thevet after discovering her.

Te vets were shocked to see a rare, two-faced

feline, also known as a Janus Cat, and were evenmore surprised to find that the kitten was in goodhealth. Many Janus Cats experience compli-cations shortly after birth. Unfortunately, mostJanus cats die before adulthood, but Durkee hasa feeling that Duecy could be one of those specialexceptions.

Durkee plans to play the role of mom for Due-cy, and she has already started bottle-feeding hernew furry baby. When Duecy isnt amazing on-lookers or getting a snack, she spends most her

time curled up in a dresser drawer equipped witha blanket and heating pad.

    WHEN IT ISNT AHAIRBALL: HOW

    I LEARNED MY CATHAS ASTHMA.

My cats coughing was somethingdifferent, and it was up to me tounravel the mystery.

    AMBER CARLTON

Ugh! Hairball, I thought. I had been playing with

my newly adopted cat, Smudge. As I swung a toyover his head, he moved to catch it and then sud-denly stopped. Crouching down low, he extendedhis neck and began coughing, swaying his headfrom side to side.

I waited for him to produce the hairball but henever did. After about a minute, he seemed to re-cover and was ready to play again. I thought lit-tle of it at the time. But as the days passed, I be-came more concerned. I noticed that most playsessions led to a nonproductive coughing fit. And

even if they didnt, he ended up in an open-mouthpant after only a short time. Still, I rationalized it.For the last year, he had been living in a veteri-nary clinic as a blood donor kitty. I had no idea

how much exercise hed gotten, so maybe he was

out of shape. Plus, as a blood donor, hed gotten athorough work-up to ensure that he was healthy. Iwas certain I had nothing to worry about.

A month later, spring was in full swing and ourwindows were open much of the time. Tatswhen the spontaneous episodes started. Smudgewould awaken from a sound sleep and begincoughing and wheezing. He also began to scratchand groom more. Maybe he had allergies. I madea vet appointment.

Our vet is a truly awesome guy. He is compas-sionate, thorough, and open-minded -- threethings you want in a veterinarian. I explainedmy concerns and what I had witnessed. He felt

    TIPS | LIFESTYLE

that since there was only one episode a day andSmudge was also itchy, it was probably allergies. He suggested we try an antihistamine.

Te itching subsided a bit but the episodes con-tinued. I tried not to freak out which, to be hon-est, I tend to do at the slightest little thing when itcomes to the furkids. Only allergies, I kept tell-ing myself, Its only allergies. And I really had noreason to doubt this. Smudges episodes got bet-ter in the summer, quite a bit worse in the fall, andthen improved greatly in the winter, following thepattern that most allergies take. See? Teyre justnot cat allergies.

However, in the meantime, he had developed anasty chin infection due to feline acne. Becausethe acne and the infection stubbornly resisted anyand all conventional treatments, our vet referredus to a veterinary dermatologist, Dr. Campbell.

Even with the help of a specialist, it took manymonths to get Smudges chin problems un-der control. By this time, it was spring again andSmudges itchiness and coughing had kicked infull force, and they both seemed worse than the

year before. I brought it up to Dr. Campbell who

suggested that we consider allergy testing and im-munotherapy (allergy shots) for the itching. Likeour regular vet, she wasnt too concerned aboutSmudges coughing. However, since he wouldhave to be sedated for the testing, she wanted toget x-rays to rule out a heart condition. So back toour regular vet we went.

Now, during all this time, I hadnt been sitting id-ly by. Somewhere I remembered reading aboutfeline asthma and had started doing my own re-search. Smudges symptoms fit perfectly with the

classical asthma presentation: exercise intoler-ance, unproductive cough while crouched lowand swaying the head from side to side. In ad-dition, like humans, asthma in cats is caused bya hypersensitivity to environmental allergens, which we already knew Smudge had.

Convinced that Smudge was asthmatic, I askedour vet to not only look at the heart on the x-rays,but also the lungs. Sure enough, Smudge dis-played the tell-tale doughnut shapes in hislungs, indicating inflammation in the airways. As

relieved as I was to have a definitive diagnosis, Iwas also overwhelmed and scared. Like asthmat-ic humans, asthmatic cats can have a severe res-piratory crisis at any time and die, so I knew we

needed to start treatment right away. After re-searching our options, I decided to try daily in-haled medication in addition to allergy shots. Te

inhaled medication (Flovent, the same thing hu-mans use) would take care of the inflammationand symptoms, while the allergy shots wouldtackle the underlying cause.

Now, I know youre probably thinking, How ex-actly do you get a cat to use an inhaler?

We use a device called an Aerokat. It was origi-nally designed for use with infants and then mod-ified for animals. Te inhaler fits in one end, youpuff the medicine into the chamber, and the cat

breathes out the mask at the other end. While itmay seem impossible to get a cat used to sucha contraption, thousands of asthmatic kitties allover the world use them every day.

Smudge was a champion puffer after only a fewtries and he now comes to get me if Im late withhis puffs. (Some people say its probably becausehe has associated the puffs with feeling better. Ithink its because he has associated the puffs withlots of treats. Whatever works.) Since starting thisregimen in April, Smudge has had only one minor

coughing episode. He runs and jumps and playswith his toys with no effort at all. He is much lessitchy and all in all, is happier and more comforta-ble. And thats a huge relief to all of us.

rial anxiety like a good interactiveplay session. If you have a bully cat, play can use up his excess energy

in a way that doesnt intimidate theothers. Less confident cats build uptheir self-esteem through play.

    8. IF YOU FEEL GOOD, THEYLL FEEL GOOD. Alot of people feel stressed and per-haps even guilty about having todownsize, not just because of theircats comfort but because of all

Recently I faced staggering disappointment, soI asked myself, What would Grumpy Cat do?When bad timing crushed my chances of a sched-uled one-on-one interview with Grumpy Cat be-fore the recent Friskies Awards, I was diappointed. So I channeled my inner Grumpy Cat and asked:What would Grumpy Cat do? Heres the advice Igleaned from thinking about it.

    1. GO WITH THE FLOW. Sure, she might appear miffed

or frownie-faced but she wouldnt pull a hissy fitor feel sorry for herself. Shes living in the mo-ment. She would go with the flow, and thats whatwe both did.

    FIVE THINGSI LEARNED FROMGRUMPY CAT.

    2. PUT IT OUT THERE AND DREAM BIG. On October 24,2012, the official Grumpy Cat website posted asmall wish: We are considering creating a plush

Grumpy Cat stuffed animal. Te startup costs areinsane. Tere is a prototype fee and well have topay upfront for a minimum order of 1000-1500pieces. Te only way this will be possible is if wetake pre-orders and/or have a successful Kick-starter campaign. A year later, after Gund ac-quired worldwide licensing rights to manufac-ture and distribute Grumpy Cat plush toys, theyare a reality.

    3. RESPECT YOUR NATURAL RHYTHMS.Tere are ear-ly birds and night owls, and it turns out both

Grumpy Cat and I are night owls. She is famousfor being dozy during the day even during mediaappearances but perks up at night, demandingattention and play between 3 and 6 a.m. She andthose around her respect her natural rhythms.Mornings are my grumpiest and instead of forc-ing nature, I schedule creative work later in theday and evening. While most may not have asflexible a schedule as mine, we dont need to beslaves to an alarm clock.

    4. THE APPLE CAN FALL FAR FROM THE TREE. Classic idi-

oms like Kids turn out like their parents arentalways true. In fact, thinking were destined toturn out like our parents can be self-defeating orlimiting. Grumpy Cat and her brother, Pokey, wereborn to a perfectly normal and lovely Calico momnamed Callie. Teir father, likely a feral, is an un-known influence. While Grumpy Cat had normalparents, she was born with genetic issues includ-ing dwarfism. Te apple fell far from the tree, andits the best thing that could have happened to her.

    5. HAPPINESS IS A CHOICE. Grumpy Cat is famous for

saying no. Despite deceptive perma-frown sheshappy and unwittingly shares her secret: by mak-ing people smile and sharing, it makes othershappy. She knows life isnt about pleasing every-one. Its impossible and peoplepleasers are someof the unhappiest people on the planet. When youfeel overburdened and put-upon, dont feel guiltyfor saying no. It means saying yes to honoring

your limits. Why waste time and energy being re-sentful, angry or jealous? Te grass or catnip isntgreener on the other side. By accepting our lim-itations and deciding to be happy anyway, who

knows what unexpected rewards are waiting tobe reaped.

Flying with cats is not as hardas it sounds. If your cat can nap,

your cat can fly. Learning how

to travel with your cat on an air-plane helps you to create a safe, predictable, and calm passagefor your kitty when the fur flies.Prepare well in advance Forcats that will travel in the cab-in, buy an airline-approved air-plane pet carrier. Te best catcarriers for airplane travel aredurably sewn with lots of airvents; a zippered top and sideexit door; a soft, removable bot-

tom pad; and several flat inter-nal and external pockets. Resistthe temptation to buy a design-er carrier. Te flash draws un-desirable attention.

For cats that will travel in car-go, buy a sturdy, airline-ap-proved cargo crate with a gooddoor latch. It should have de-tachable food and water recep-tacles. Since cats are small. Only

for multiple cats who will sharea container, or irrepressibly vo-ciferous cats, is cargo travel anadvisable method.

All carriers should have attach-ments for paperwork and nametags. Use the airplane pet carrierto transport your cat to variousdestinations prior to flight. It isbest if these destinations termi-nate simply in a return home, or

a visit to a friend the cat likes. If you use the airline carrier totake your cat to the vet, such

journeys may engender fear andloathing and more.

Gradually increase the durationof the time your cat spends inthe carrier, taking longer jour-neys to desirable destinations.Include a toy, but avoid food, because cats generally should

    not eat on airplane trips.

Keep the carrier open in thehouse and put enticing cat toys

WHEN BOOKING FLIGHTSChoose an airline that permitscats and clarify whether yourcat will travel in cabin or in car-go. Some airlines restrict cargoflights during some times of the

year. Most importantly, whenbooking, get a locator numberfor your cat that is associatedwith your seat number.

STARTER TRIPS. If an itinerantlifestyle with your cat is part of

your plan, take a short flight toa nearby destination as a start-er flight. Your cat will learn thatthe long wait ends in eventu-al release from the carrier, andwill be better prepared for anupcoming long flight.

    FOOD AND MEDS IN FLIGHT.

Feed your cat at least five hoursin advance of travel, and avoidgiving water within one hourof flight. (Water may be advis-

If your cat takes meds, sched-ule the doses according to yourtravel schedule. Remember that

an hour before the flight, andonce you enter the airport, yourcat will be in the carrier.

    TRAVELING WITH

    A KITTEN.

You can spare yourself a lot of trauma by gettingyour kitten comfortable with traveling at a youngage. Tis doesnt mean shell never hide from youwhen you pull out the carrier, but it does mean youboth will be much less stressed and anxious on

your way to your next destination.

    1. Get approval to carry her in the cabin. With thecurrent regulations about carry-on luggage, youwont be able to bring more than one personal itemand one cat, so keep that in mind.

2.Airlines have very strict rules about pet travel,so call well in advance, make your reservation for

your kitten, and pay any extra fees for this privilege.Get a copy of the airlines pet policy, and your and

your kittens reservations, in writing. Bring thesewith you when you check in for your flight.

    3. Make sure you have all required documentation.

4.Your kitten will need to be in an airline-approvedcarrier. At minimum, that means the carrier needsto fit under the seat in front of you. Check with theairline for specifics about approved carriers.

    5. Put a live animal label on your kittens carrier.Even though shell be with you, if something hap-pens and you and your kitten are separated, this isimportant, very important.

6.Check before you leave to make sure your carri-er is in good repair.

again until you arrive at the newhome or hotel. Most cats do notevacuate while on a leash, and

most prefer to use a box.

Always make sure your cat issecure in the carrier or crateand does not bolt. Keep thedoor closed until you are in anenclosed space. Cats are veryslippery when scared. Yourcat should wear an ID collarat all times (minus extra easi-ly-snagged charms and orna-ments). If you must take him

out, hold extra tight. rafficaround airports is intense andextremely dangerous.

IN THE AIRPORT BUILDING.For cats traveling in cargo in acrate, the check-in counter staffwill advise you where to deliv-er your cat for transport. If yourcat is flying in cabin, you willcarry him through gate security. You must remove him from his

carrier and carry him throughthe metal detectors, allowinghis bag to go through the X-raymachine. Poor, poor cat.

Never allow your cat to passthrough the X-ray machin, it isnot permitted and is highly dan-gerous. Never!

DOCUMENTATION. Make sureyour cat's rabies inoculations

are up to date and keep a vet'shealth record in your travel pa-perwork. Paper, paperwork.

ON THE PLANE.Slide your carri-er under the seat in front. Checkon your cat now and then, butavoid exciting him to make himfeel he may be let out to play. If

your cat is traveling in cargo,check-in staff will advise youwhere to pick him up after the

    TEN THINGS TO PACK

    WHEN TRAVELINGWITH YOUR CAT.

When we think of travelingwith a pet, we usually picturea dog happily jumping into thecar and drooling over his own-er's shoulder during the ride.Or we think of a calm, sleep-ing dog content in his carrier.Te thought of a cat traveling to

destinations unknown tends toconjure up an image of a scared, neurotic feline hissing throughthe gate of her carrier. Manydogs are comfortable trave-ling short and long distancesbut few cats are so inclined. Soknowing what to pack to make

your cat's and your trip morepalatable is essential.

Many cats dont like to trav-

el for several reasons, the mainbeing that they are territorialcreatures. Your cat has workedhard to establish his territo-ry in your house and, when youmove him from his kingdom, hethinks he is trespassing on an-others space. Tis puts yourcat on guard and, at the sametime, frightens him because hemight have to defend this newterritory at any time. Another

drawback is the motion of a car, plane or train. A cat is designedto detect motion and the move-ment of the vehicle both con-fuses and disorients him. So,how can we make the trip lesstraumatic for our cats?

PACKING WELL IS THE KEY. Ifyou are prepared for your catsneeds and choose the items that

you take carefully, you can alle-

viate a lot of the anxiety for bothof you. An unprepared travelerwill find that his stress rises ashe finds along the way that he

does not have the tools to carefor the traveling cat. And hisstress will affect said feline.

    WHAT THINGS TO PACK.

    1. CARRIER. Some people optfor a special harness that se-

cures to a seat belt, but we high-ly recommend you stick to ahard shell carrier when trav-eling with your cat. A securedcarrier is the safer way for yourcat to travel and, if you get herused to it slowly before the trip, she will feel safe and comforta-ble in it.

    2. HARNESS.Do bring a harnessso your cat can stretch his legs

at rest stops along the way. Stopevery couple of hours at least.

    3. CARRIER PAD. Use a pad thatyour cat has been sleeping on athome. Bring additional pads ortowels in case your cat has anaccident during the ride, whichis more than likely to happen.Keeping your cat dry and com-fortable is essential to curbinghis anxiety.

    4. TOYS. Many cats will ignoreanything you place in their car-rier yet familiar toys still seemto help calm kitty. Often catswill just lie on them instead ofactually playing, but you mightget your cat to play with a dan-gling toy in the vehicle at a reststop.

    5. PHEROMONES. Using a fe-

line pheromone mimic collaror spray can help your cat relaxon the trip. Tese pheromonesare naturally secreted when a

cat rubs his face on somethingso that, on returning to the spot,he is familiar with the scent and

finds it comforting. Feliwayspray can be used on your catsbedding in his carrier or youcan try a Good Behavior collarwhich creates a calming atmos-phere for your cat anyplace.

    6. FOOD AND WATER SUPPLY.Calculate how much cat food

you need to bring based on yourcats daily consumption. Bringenough for the whole trip so

you dont possibly have to sub-stitute a different brand at somepoint. Its better not to feed yourcat while youre out on the roadas it will likely just result in re-gurgitated food. Always bringmore water than you think

youll need. Itll save you havingto make stops just to get more.Offer it to your cat at every reststop. He or she will appreciate.

    7. BOWLS. Tere are many op-tions for bringing along bowlsfor your cat - many people likethe collapsible travel bowls but

you can also get some that fiton the door of your cats carri-er. Keep in mind that water willsplash as you roll along so onlyfill it half-way.

    8. TREATS. Bring several kindsof treats along and offer them to

your cat at the rest stops. Dontbe discouraged if she turns hernose up at them. After all, whyshould she trust somethingcoming from the person who isputting her through this indig-nation? Leave a few in her car-rier and shell probably eventu-ally eat them.

    9. LITTER BOX. For the rest stopsits important to have a good lit-

tle box system. Te easiest placeto put one when you stop is thefloor of the passengers seat. Let

your cat roam around the car

when parked and gently showher the box if needed. Your bestbet is to get several disposable

boxes with litter already in themso you can toss them after shesused them.

    10. MEDICATIONS AND FIRSTAID.Its easy to forget any med-ications that your cat takes sothrow these into your bag earlyon in packing. Also bring a firstaid kit which can be purchasedat any large pet store or makeone yourself with the following:

gauze, medical tape, hydrogenperoxide, Neosporin (or simi-lar product), tweezers, scissors, towels, sterile saline solution.

    AND DONT FORGET...

Remember to pack your catsvet records when you trav-el in case you need to bringher to a clinic during the trip. You should also gather infor-

mation about vet clinics alongyour route so you know whereto take her if there is an emer-gency. Check out this websitefor emergency clinics acrossthe country. Also make sure anyhotels you book are cat-friend-ly well in advance.

With a little planning, a trip withyour cat can be fun (or, at least, tolerable). And keep in mind

that cats tend to recover veryquickly once theyve reachedthe destination and re-estab-lished their role as ruler of theirkingdom. God save the cat!

Every winter, my cat, JFK, who is usual-ly an outdoor cat, gets a little bit crank-ier . . . well, a lot crankier. When hes notsleeping directly in front of the heateror scarfing food, hes begging me for at-

tention. On my last trip to New York, Ilearned a lot of great tips from Grace andAmy, both experts at owning indoor cats, for keeping your cat happy. It essential-ly boils down to the following: keep themwarm and cozy, give them plenty of affec-tion and make sure they receive a suffi-cient amount of entertainment and exer-cise daily.

After scouring my local pet shops, I re-alized that nothing was quite up to snuff

for me visually. JFK loves wand toys andscratch pads, so I decided to make myown versions of these toys. Tey wereeasy and cheap to assemble, and unlikemost plastic toys, I could actually see my-self displaying these proudly. Yes, Im acat lady, but that doesnt mean I cant bea stylish cat lady. If you have a free after-noon and some basic woodworking skills,

you can easily craft these gifts for your fe-line companions in time for the holidays.Happy crafting, and heres to all cats,

    however ornery they may be.
