ESL Orientation Workshop Rationale: Welcome to Global Business writing. This workshop presentation is designed to introduce English as a Second Language writers to writing center pedagogy, especially some basic concepts in writing center pedagogy. It also familiarizes them with the idea of agenda-setting so that they may come to a writing center with their concerns and issues. The last issue addressed is grammar and dictionary use. This presentation can be used as part of writing center orientation program for ESL classes or as part of orientation at an ESL students first writing tutorial.

ESL Orientation Workshop There are three items on my Global Business Writing Presenation.ESL Orientation Workshop It is very important for the presenter to emphasize the the collaborative relationship between a tutor and a student. The presenter also needs to drive home the point that while tutors TRY to answer all the questions students have, tutors also ask students questions that can facilitate the students writing/learning process.ESL Orientation Workshop Just like you physically are what we eat, The greatest Professor in History Peter Drucker over 92 years old, poorly spoken English, heavy German accent, worse than many Koreans. But his written business books are perfect.ESL Orientation Workshop A bum, lazy, underachiever, a looser.ESL Orientation Workshop Clean, sharp, professional, successful a winner.ESL Orientation Workshop You can be the smartest researcher, champion marketer, greatest designer, If you cannot communicate in English effectively you will not get promoted by you boss, will not get hired.ESL Orientation Workshop If it is painful to read your documents, customers will put your messages until the end or may not send messages. ESL Orientation Workshop Key Concept: writing as a process. It can be brainstorming for the paper, drawing an outline, Q and A or anything the writer does before actually drafting the paper. It is also important to differentiate revising from editing. Revising is a crucial part of the writing process for good writers. Correcting surface errors is editing, nor revising. ESL Orientation Workshop If students are not familiar with the writing task, writing samples are extremely important. Remind the students of the reading-writing connection. ESL Orientation Workshop it is crucial to ask ESL students to summarize the patterns of errors they tend to make and resort to a good dictionary for many of their grammar questions. ESL Orientation Workshop Activity: The presenter may ask students what dictionaries they use, how often, and when. Remind them that the best dictionaries for ESL writers may not be the same as those for native speakers. ESL Orientation Workshop This is also a time to invite questions about tutorials.
