Purdue University Global HistoryWe trace our roots to the American Institute of Commerce (AIC), apostsecondary school that opened its doors in 1937 in Davenport, Iowa,to provide training for underserved job seekers in a nation still reelingfrom the Great Depression. That long and proud legacy continues to thisday at Purdue University Global.

AIC was purchased by Quest Education Corporation in November 1998and in April of 2000 changed its name to Quest College. Quest EducationCorporation was purchased in July 2000 by Kaplan, Inc. In November2000, the name of the College was changed to Kaplan College, whichsoon began to offer degrees online with just 34 students and a handful ofdegree options. In 2004, Kaplan College expanded its academic offeringsto include master’s-level programs and became Kaplan University.

In 2007, Hamilton College merged with KU, and its locations becamebranch campuses of the University. That same year, Concord Law School, founded in 1998 as the nation's first wholly online law school, formallymerged with Kaplan University.

In 2009, the Hagerstown campus, formerly a Kaplan College campus, became a branch campus of Kaplan University.

In 2010, Andover College merged with KU, and its locations becamebranch campuses of the University and, in 2013, we opened an additionalMaine campus in Augusta.

In 2017, it was announced that Purdue University would acquire KaplanUniversity, and in early 2018 this transition was completed, forming a newinstitution called Purdue University Global.

  • 14   |    Approach to Learning

AssessmentCourse-Level AssessmentThroughout each course, faculty assess not only your performanceon graded items according to scoring rubrics but also your masteryof the learning outcomes embedded in the course. This course-levelassessment (CLA) details the extent to which you have mastered thoselearning outcomes on the following scale:

    • Mastery (5)• Proficient (4)• Practiced (3)• Emergent (2)• Introductory (1)• No Progress (0)

Competency ReportIf you are enrolled in a Purdue Global degree program or certificateprogram, you receive a Competency Report that summarizes yourprogress toward mastery of learning outcomes contained in yourprogram. When you complete a course, course-level assessment resultsare mapped and added to program outcome data in six categories:

    1. Leadership and teamwork2. Professionalism and ethics3. Communication4. Disciplinary knowledge and skills5. Research and analysis6. Critical thinking and problem solving

In your Competency Report, you see how well you are performing towardmastery of the program’s learning outcomes across these six categoriesat that time in your studies. This report provides a fuller picture of yourprogress toward achieving knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors tobe successful in the workplace. You can view your Competency Report inPurdue Global Campus.

Competency Reports are not created for Concord Law School students.

Course TypesThe building blocks of Purdue Global’s programs are courses. There arethree types, traditional courses, module courses, and open courses, whichprovide you with options to meet your preferences regarding learningapproach, schedule, and pace. Traditional courses and module courses, both credit-bearing, are delivered in:

    • 10-week terms for undergraduate and graduate courses (A, B, and Cacademic calendars (p. 36))

    • 6-week terms for select graduate courses (D academic calendar(p. 36))

Traditional CoursesTraditional courses allow for multiple learning outcomes, and theircredit value varies. They provide instructor-led, step-by-step learningwith a fixed weekly schedule. Each traditional course contains assignedreadings, learning activities, graded assignments, and virtual scheduledmeetings (seminars) with your instructor and peers each weekthroughout the term. You also have the opportunity to work with yourinstructors outside of scheduled interaction through virtual office hours.

Your instructor scores your performance on weekly learning activities, and your final course grade at the end of the term is the cumulative resultof those scores.

Module CoursesModule courses are one-credit “pieces” of traditional courses built arounda single learning outcome.  They provide student-directed learning withongoing instructor support over a variable schedule.

You begin the module course in the online classroom by taking areadiness check, a self-assessment whose results show how familiaryou are with concepts in the module course. After reviewing the resultsof the readiness check, you determine how much time and effort to putinto course readings and practice materials before you are ready todemonstrate mastery of course concepts in a summative assessment—a competency assessment. If you pass the assessment, the modulecourse is complete, and you can begin work on the next module coursein sequence on your schedule without having to wait for the end of aterm. Your instructor is available throughout the module course via live“faculty connect” meetings, discussion board exchanges, and email toteach, coach, and support you. You can collaborate with classmates viathe discussion board.

For information on the policies governing module courses, seethe academic policy (p. 6) section of the Catalog.

Open CoursesOpen courses, offered through Open College at Purdue UniversityGlobal, are available to the public at no cost. If you take one and wishto demonstrate mastery of the course concepts you have learned, youmay take a corresponding course assessment for a small fee. If you passthe assessment, you earn college credit to apply toward a Purdue Globaldegree program.

While open courses can be applied toward many Purdue Global programs, they are particularly useful for the Bachelor of Science in ProfessionalStudies and Associate of Science in Professional Studies programsoffered through Open College.

Relationship Between Traditional Courses and ModuleCoursesThe icon appears in the title of traditional courses that are also available as a set of modulecourses.

As module courses are one-credit “pieces” of traditional courses, you canmeet the same requirements by completing either a traditional course ora set of corresponding module courses.

Example: You can meet the CM107 College Composition I five-creditcourse requirement by passing either the traditional course or theequivalent five module courses.

    • Traditional Course: CM107 College Composition I (worth fivecredits)

    • Module Courses: • CM107M1 Understanding What You Read - A Pathway to Reading

and Writing Success (worth one credit)

    • CM107M2 Using Language Appropriate to Audience and WritingSituation (worth one credit)

Learning PathsAt Purdue Global, learning paths allow you to progress through yourprogram in ways that align with your preferences in learning, schedule, pace, and degree of customization. There are three learning paths:GlobalTrack, ExcelTrack, and CustomTrack.

GlobalTrack Programs on the GlobalTrack learning path are composed of traditionalcourses, while also allowing for the inclusion of module courses, whenavailable for the specific program and term. This flexibility gives youopportunities to adjust your course load and pace along your pathtoward degree completion. All Purdue Global programs are offered onGlobalTrack except for the Bachelor of Science in Professional Studiesand Associate of Science in Professional Studies, which are offered onthe CustomTrack learning path. GlobalTrack students must take at leastone traditional course each term.

Youmust take all of your program’s courses as module courses, unless only atraditional course fulfills a particular requirement. ExcelTrack is designedto allow students with applicable skills, professional experience, andself-direction to accelerate their pace toward earning their degree, andit uses a term-based tuition model: the more courses you complete perterm, the greater your cost savings. ExcelTrack is best suited for studentswho can commit to a heavy course load and rapid pace of learningevery term and thereby achieve savings in cost and time toward degreecompletion. To determine if ExcelTrack is a good fit for you, speak to yourUniversity representative. For more information on the policies governingExcelTrack, see the academic policy (p. 6) section of the Catalog. Forprograms offered on ExcelTrack, see Programs A-Z (p. 46) . Both programsculminate in a capstone class with a portfolio project.
