Pune to attract 40,000 Crore investment in auto sector
Pune, once a sedate city, known as pensioner's paradise has now
transformed into a bustling metropolis, that not only attracted the
IT investments, but now has become one of the major automotive hubs
of the Country.
Though other cities like Chennai is also staking claim to be the
'Detroit of India', given the investments the city attracts from
auto majors, the description fits the bill to Pune than any other
clusters in the country.
The outskirts of Pune, especially locations like Pimpri-Chinchwad,
Chakan and Talegaon are attracting huge investments from the
automotive industry, though Pune is already home to auto giants
such as Tata Motors and Bajaj Auto, right from the
1960s.

Pune to attract 40,000 Crore investment in auto sector
Mercedes-Benz, the German auto major entered through a joint
venture with the Tata Group in the 1990s, later set its own course
and has established a plant in the region. With the entry of
Mercedes-Benz, other major players including FIAT India, General
Motors India, Volkswagen India and set up shop in that region and
in a not so distant past, the country's largest utility vehicles
manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra have committed large
investments in Pune.
In Pune, Tata Motors is the largest player followed by Bajaj Auto,
Force Motors, Mahindra two-wheeler manufacturing unit,
Mercedes-Benz, GM India, JCB from the construction equipment
segment, Volkswagen, which makes a range of cars, Premier Motors
and FIAT India.
The new projects that are coming up in and around Pune city
include the FIAT-Tata alliance at Ranjangaon with a envisaged
investment of Rs 4,000 crore,
GM India's Rs 1,400 crore investment with a further Rs 900 crore
expansion.
Volkswagen's investment plans of Rs 3,8000 crore,
Mercedes-Benz also making Rs 250 crore investment.

New Projects In Pune
Mahindra earmarking a huge amount of investment within the next
two years.
Bajaj Auto is also planning to invest Rs 300 crore in its two
wheeler assembly plant as part of expansion and futher pumping in
Rs 1,000 crore in its car initiative.
Pune is also home to a slew of Tier-I and Tier-II auto component
and infrastructure vendors including Bharat Forge and Sandvik, who
make forging parts and large cutting tools respectively.
The report quotes ArunFirodia, Chairman of KineticGroup as saying
that the easy availability of skilled manpower is the prime reason
for the rapid development of the automotive sector in Pune.
22
New Projects In Pune
Currently, more than a lakh of engineers are serving in Pune,
perhaps a figure which is unmatched anywhere in the world.
MIDC has created mega industrial estates at Pimpri-Chinchwad,
Chakan and Talegaon on a scale that too is unmatched. These have
fostered the growth of automobile companies.
As automotive firms grow, obviously the auto component sector also
flourishes". The report goes on to quote him as saying that the
Pune region has a steady supply of trained technical manpower with
more than 1,000 technical and engineering institutions dotting the
landscape.
There is a steady availability of a three lakh strong qualified
manpower here.

The report further cites that the development of Pune's unique
selling proposition (USP) is not far to seek if one looks at the
history of this region's industry. The seeds were sown in the 1960s
when Bajaj and the Tatas invested heavily in their facilities in
the region and this fostered the mushrooming of first generation
technocrat promoted units to cater to the needs of these
facilities.
What was lacking though is a focussed vendor development programme
and access to quality technical training. That need is now being
directly addressed by interested parties including an aggressive
approach by the state government.
The first automobile cluster is Pune although it is not really a
cluster because all the players are not located in a particular
demarcated area, the report points out.
