• The protist kingdom is sometimes called the “junk drawer” kingdom because it is filled with organisms that don’t fit easily into other kingdoms.

• Some protists have one cell and some are many cells

• All protists have a nucleus– Can you find my nucleus?

Three Types of Protists• Because protists vary, scientists have

proposed three ways of grouping protists.

• The 3 different types:– Animal-like protists– Plant-like protists– Fungus-like protists

Animal-like Protistscalled protozoans

How are they similar to animals?

• They are able to move around and they must consume food. (They cannot make their

own food)

How are they different to animals?

• They have only one cell

Protozoans With Pseudopods

• Pseudopods are temporary bulges of the cell membrane that help them move.

• Ex: Amoebas

Protozoans With Cilia • Cilia are like thin

hairs that move in a wavelike pattern.

• Cilia move organisms by acting like tiny oars.

• Ex: Paramecium

Other Protozoans

• Some protozoans use flagella for movement.

• Ex: Euglena (you-glee-nah)

Sporozoans

• Sporozoans are parasites.– Parasites are organisms who live on or in another

organism and harm that organism.– Hosts are the organisms to which the parasites

live.

Plantlike Protists• Most plantlike protists are called algae.

Fungus-like Protists• Fungus-like protists must consume

food, and use spores to reproduce.

• Spores are tiny cells that are able to grow into a new organism
