Flexicon Corporation (Australia) plans to further reach out to its customers in Asia with the establishment of more offi ces throughout the

region. This enables the company to give better service to its customers via their local offi ces.

“The engineering technology will come from Australia, but the support will be the responsibility of local people on the ground who knows the customers and are closer in proximity,” says Ray Greene, the company’s MD.

The company has had a long standing partnership with Thailand-based Absolute Packaging for support services of its equipment. In the future, the plans are to develop such partnerships in other countries, with companies who are in industry segments similar to Flexicon’s.

“We’ve had the sales people and the engineers come into Australia for training on our products and procedures under the application engineers there. We also give them the technical backup they need to be able to communicate with the customers,” continues Mr Greene.

PharmaTech SeminarThe message of this seminar is simple – a change of mindset is required.

Speaking at the PharmaTech seminar, Ampol Mitrevej, chairman of the industrial pharmacist group, Phamarceutical

Association of Thailand, hopes to educate the pharmaceutical industry on Liposome technology and HVAC systems, and that they are not as diffi cult and expensive to apply as they think. He also explains that if they can apply the technology into the manufacturing processes, they can move on to another level of development.

The seminar is to create understanding among manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and industry stakeholders on the awareness of specifications for drug standards and the regulations viewpoints of the Drug Administration of Thailand.

“The seminar provides updated knowledge about Liposome technology as well as the PICS – the GMP requirements that FTA will

apply in the near future. Several pharmacists are unfamiliar with Liposome technology. Therefore, we explain today how the technology can be applied for their formulations (both in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products). After the seminar, they can use the knowledge they learn here to develop their new product,” he says.

As far as future trends go, Mr Mitrevej says: “Liposome technology is a trend most companies will need to install and develop, in order to be more advance.” n

Partnering local companies in the region is key to faster customer service. By Tjut Rostina

and Indonesia. “If you would like to join forces with a company, they’ve got to have past experience in that industry, know the market, know the companies. This allows us to hit the ground running straightaway,” he further explains.

eArTh resCue missionWhen it comes down to taking care of the environ-ment, Flexicon has been looking at various ways of making equipment dust free, and eliminating danger at the workplace. They are also focused on the reduction of material content for their

equipment, so as to achieve minimum wastage. “We’ve re-engineered a lot of our products that

would normally be made of 3 mm stainless steel for instance, to only 2.5 mm now. This marks a reduction in raw materials,” says Mr Greene.

He continues that in the case for compressed air consumption, the company is careful to make sure it is as effi cient as possible. “You could build a machine with air cylinders and valves that uses 10 cubic feet of air per hour, by engineering it, you only use fi ve cubic feet of air. This reduces electrical consumption, and translates to savings on cost.” n

Researchers from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) have developed a bio-degradable plastic, from the skins of tropical fruits such as bananas and rambutans.

The head of the research team, Professor Hanafi Ismail, said that the idea to produce plastic from the waste products of fruits was conceived as there was potential market for bio-degradable plastic. The market is estimated to increase up to 30 percent each year.

"Commercial bio-degradable plastic such as Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Polycaprolacton (PCL) that are available in the West are at least eight times as expensive as the petroleum-based, non-biodegradable plastic such as Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP). We have developed a study to produce bio-degradable plastic using waste products from fruits to reduce costs, but which can compete with the quality of the commercial plastics that are currently available in the market," he said.

He added that the product, named, Fruitplas, is estimated to be 10 percent cheaper than the petroleum-based commercial plastics (PE, PP). It also comes with several advantages including its ability to degrade within 3 to six months.

Apart from that, it will help to increase environmental awareness among the public so that they use plastics that can ensure a brighter future for the next generation. n

Getting packaging right can help convince a cynical consumer that a product’s ethical claims are real, according to research from Datamonitor.

A study from the independent business analyst has found that although over half of consumers globally reported that protecting the environment is significantly more important to them now than two years ago, this does not translate into their grocery purchasing behaviour, except when it comes to packaging.

Indeed, 57 percent of consumers thought that it is important to buy ethical or socially responsible products, but only 42 percent reported altering their habits to do so, revealing a significant disconnection between what consumers perceive as important to their purchasing habits, and what they actually buy.

However, the same proportion of consumers said packaging was a key consideration in their purchase decisions, to those who changed their buying habits to include products with reduced packaging.

“The more tangible nature of packaging allows consumers to actually see and feel the difference they are making. Sustainable packaging is a claim that can be physically substantiated, rather than just supported by a stamp or logo which can draw considerable scepticism,” said Katrina Diamonon, consumer markets analyst.

Sustainable packaging can also serve to validate other ethical claims. In the case of natural and organic products for example, the benefit of reduced or biodegradable packaging can add significant credibility to any other environmental or sustainable credentials. n

Exhibiting at ProPak Asia this year is Heat and Control. The food processing systems manufacturer continues its relationship with the show despite the recent political uncertainties in Thailand. Their decision to participate,

judging from the number of enquiries they received for the past three days, had paid dividends.

“The show turned out to be better than what we expected considering the disturbance in the political arena in Thailand not too long ago. That had not impacted the turnout in any negative way. We have been getting a steady flow of enquiries,” says Ricky Ong, sales manager (Asia), Heat and Control.

Faith in the show has been translated to results as Mr Ong reported a “general increase” in the number of enquiries compared to last year.

Looking AheAdBesides taking part in major shows, the company has also taken a big step in its future developments. Mr Ong tells us that the company had set up a factory of size comparable to the one in Australia, in Nanjing, China to increase the capacity to serve the market.

Says Mr Ong: “The new factory, some two hours train ride from Shanghai, enjoys the high profile of a big city. As such, we are able to get quality management as well as skilled workers.”

emerging TrendsWith two major branch of products (meat processing and snack), the company is constantly on the move to keep up with the ever-changing trends.

“On the meat side, there is more demand for improved yield and sanitation. These are areas we do very well in. When it comes to the snack side, systems that address the needs of customers, (eg: those who require to produce many types of products in one machine) are one of the big projects we are involved in. One example is our Universal Potato Chip System, which makes all styles of potato chips and other products using one continuous fryer system,” he concludes. n

Automatic pressure sensitive labelling systems provide consumer packaged goods

(CPG) companies with the flexibility to increase throughput, streamline product changeovers, meet application-specific challenges, and customise labelling solutions.

inCreAse ThroughpuTAutomatic pressure sensitive labelling’s throughput capacity exceeds hand or semi-automatic labelling’s capabilities.

The label l ing systems g ive companies the ability to implement a flexible system that can adjust to demand levels and meet changing market needs efficiently, without increasing manpower requirements. In addition, the systems can be designed in a product specific configuration as an inexpensive alternative for high speed/high volume requirements.

Throughput is increased when these labelling systems are designed with a zero down time configuration. The system will run with virtually ‘zero down time’, because if a labelling head runs out of labels, a back-up or secondary applicator will activate and continue applying labels. This is while the operator reloads the original applicator with a new roll of labels.

Once the secondary unit runs out of labels, the system will automatically

activate the first applicator. Zero down time unit configurations can be both wrap (a single head with a single back up applicator) and front/back (single front-and back-applicators with respective back up applicators).

The twin clamps on the splicing table can then be used to quickly splice the secondary label roll to the primary roll while the labels in the bin continue to feed the label applicator. In addition, there is an auto-splice dual unwinder, which does exactly what the non-stop dual unwinder d o e s , e x c e p t t h a t i t s p l i c e s automatically.

sTreAmLine ChAngeoversWith available tool-less adjustments for products of different diameters and extensive memory capacity in the label applicator’s software, automatic pressure sensitive labelling systems make it easy to changeover from product to product. These streamlined changeovers eliminate the costs, labour requirements, waste, and downtime inherent in hand or semi-automatic labelling.

CusTomise LAbeLLing soLuTions By working with an equipment manufacturer with technical and application expertise, companies can develop a custom, automatic pressure sensitive labelling solution that ensures ease of label application, accom-modates a variety of label sizes and designs, enabling them to meet their specific needs. n

As the primary label roll reaches a defined low level condition, a low label supply sensor alerts the operator by activating a strobe light and signals the drive motor to feed the rest of the labels into an accumulation bin.

Currently, various types of metal detectors are available and are based on operation principles,

structures and carrying methods. As such, a lot of information is needed for users to accurately select a metal detector that offers the required performance.

deTeCTion perFormAnCeMost metal detectors on the market adopt a coaxial detector head due to its advantage in operation principle. A detector head is where the product to be inspected is put through, and where metal contamination is detected.

In general, the performance of a metal detector is assessed using test pieces made of metal balls. There are two types of metal in test pieces: ferrous as magnetic metal; and stainless as non-magnetic metal.

A metal detector for food inspection evaluates changes in magnetic fi elds, which exceed the effect of normal food, as metal.

environmenTAL resisTAnCe Environmental resistance refers to how stable the performance of a metal detector is regardless of where it is installed. Elements affecting magnetic fields are factors that can reduce detection performance.

elements. Recently developed metal detector reduces such effects by mechanically protecting itself from noise, and utilising signal processing.

CurrenT perFormAnCeA metal detector with the latest tech-nology trends has become an inspection machine that allows the demonstration of consistent performance in a simple way.

Since a metal detector detects and evaluates changes in magnetic fi elds that surpass the effect of a product as metal contamination, there is no fi gure to indicate standard performance. For that reason, Fig 1 shows the detection sensitivity of some products randomly selected.

The figures are examples of detection sensitivity using a metal detector with a two-frequency waves detection method at an acceptable height of 50 mm.

Although manufacturers are mak-ing efforts to improve performance, maintaining good condition of instal-lation sites as well as proper usage is also a key factor for performance enhancement. n

The importance of food safety systems has increased over recent years, as the Asian food industry focuses on rapidly changing international food safety standards around the world.

The burgeoning numbers of high quality retailers supplying the four billion plus population in Asia Pacifi c are also monitoring food safety in the region.

The roLe evoLuTion oF sYsTemsThe numbers of checkweighers and metal detectors protecting Asian food packaging halls has increased dramatically over the past 10 years. Originally, the primary reason for the purchase was weight insurance.

The fundamental role for metal detectors is to ensure no metallic contaminants introduced from a fault in the manufacturing process make it through to the dinner plate.

From a quality control perspective, both checkweighers and metal detectors can protect brand integrity and identity as well as ensuring food safety for the consumer.

The AsiAn boomThe checkweigher and metal detection market is well defi ned in Europe and North America. New products and the lessons learned in European and American markets can now be incorporated into the Asian Pacifi c region as that ‘boom’ market looks to satisfy the requirements of its growing population.

By 2015, the majority of the growth is expected to come from China. The traditional ‘wet market’ of unpackaged cuts still accounted for most of the purchases just a few years ago, however, this is expected to drop below 10 percent by 2016. The increasing emphasis on meat processing is creating a new market for inspection systems.

seLeCTion For endurAnCeInnovation within the food inspection industry has been revolutionised by the integration of checkweighing and metal detection. This creates a space saving aspect in smaller production lines, cost benefits and provides extra product safety.

Manufacturers have also been developing a touch control panel that allows for ease of set up and continuous production, monitoring and control. n

Checkweighers and metal detectors have developed to become a key processing system for the modern food manufacturer. By David Hewitt, sales manager for Asia Pacifi c, Loma Systems

One of today’s most prevalent recipe management challenges is the transformation of a recipe

definition from a business system to a plant floor control system. How you understand, interpret, and apply the fundamentals of recipe management will determine the success in meeting this challenge.

The generAL reCipeThe general recipe identifies raw materials, relative quantities and the processing steps required to make the finished goods, and is considered the source of product definition for a company.

The siTe reCipeThe site recipe is referred to as the master recipe, and must contain any necessary information about local plant floor equipment to help verify the

recipe Management

to make product on a plant floor in real time. As such, they need to be refined to accommodate plant floor execution. This is where a transformation to the next level must occur to provide such information, as the exact procedural sequence to optimise production on a specific set of equipment.

Linked upSet point information from the business system must be linked to plant floor control system sequences designed to complete this task. These systems contain the localised information needed to make a certain product on a specific piece of equipment at a specific point in time.

The link between systems can be separated into two parts: translation and transformation. There are many technology solutions available to solve communication translation between systems.

The success of a recipe management strategy is still dependent on how well the user understands the components of recipe management, and then systematically designs a solution that meets their needs.

overComing The ChALLengesThe need for and challenges of having both business systems and control systems are very real, but they should not become a limiting factor to achieving effective recipe management, including transformation.

Recognising the challenges up front and developing a plan to address each challenge is the best approach. If recipe management design proves daunting, engaging a specialist is a viable option. n

correct processing of the batch.

The ConTroL reCipeAt the start of production, the control recipe takes the information provided by the master recipe, adapts it to batch specific raw material quantities and set points, links to available equipment, and defines the level of detail necessary to initiate and monitor a batch. During this time, the production department commonly refers to this entity as the running batch recipe.

mAnAgemenT moduLesRecipe management modules within enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems define the key product instructions for manufacturing in context of the business.

Typically, these recipes do not contain enough detailed information

Zaini factory produced handcrafted chocolates, cocoa and candies, but as the business grew, machinery was incorporated to help employees

meet the growing demand.

The ideAZaini had asked PRB Packing Systems to develop a system for handling a range of their products for packaging. The system had to be flexible, easy to operate, and easy to modify, since the products and boxes for shipping change frequently. This made the assignment especially difficult.

An additional consideration is the seasonal nature of the candy business, with huge volumes between September and

December, less so for Valentine’s Day through Easter, then tapering off till the following September.

Flexibility on the production line means employees are free to handle more demanding assignments.

AuTomATion resCueThe proposed solution had to be reliable, flexible, precise, adaptable, and easy to operate, with equip-ment sensitive to changes in product format. PRB

In competitive markets, even a small cost or efficiency advantage can be determinant in holding or winning share. By Claudia B Flisi, on behalf of ABB

The Chocolate ChallengePackaging Systems came up with a combination of the FlexPicker and its own F-30 vertical case packaging machine.

This combination was capable of dealing with products that when they arrive at this phase of the production cycle, are not always aligned on the production line, but follow each other in a determined distance.

over hurdLesThe biggest challenge was to ensure that the robot could handle up to 40 formats and 130 different iterations: Zaini’s range of bags holds from 50 grm to one kilograms of chocolates or sweets. The bags’ contents have different sizes and shapes.

There are also different-sized packages for shipping and display, depending on the content and weight of the bags. “In addition,

the formats change every day,” observes Dario Stringhetti, a technical specialist at the company.

As the pre-bagged items roll down the production line, a telecamera sees the format and predisposes the robot to the proper activity. This is so that it can sort and place items in the appropriate containers.

The camera has deliberately not been mounted on the robot arm to prevent damage to the camera as a result of vibration from the robot’s movements. The ‘pick and place’ robot proved equal to the chocolate challenge. It can handle 90 packages weighing 50 grm each per minute, and 35 one-kilogram packages a minute. It also works two 16-hour shifts a day, five days a week. n

tunneL MetAL detectorsGLS tunnel metal detectors, produced by S+S Inspection, can be used for inspection of bulk materials, individually packed products on a conveyor belt, a material chute, or a vibrating conveyor.

It can detect both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as metals that are embedded in the products. The metal detectors feature a slanted topside. With respect to hygienic design, cleaning water can run off of this ‘roof’ without any obstacles. The equipment is presented with the Genius + control unit. One feature of the unit is the intuitive operation of the metal detector with the optional colour-touch-panel.

ModuLAr cheese doser/WrAPPerThe Corazza FF100 Single Head Modular Cheese Doser/Wrapper from Sympak is an entry-level cheese-fi lling machine. The machine can reach a speed of up to 70 - 110 ppm, and process products that are 30 to 250 grm.

The modular design of the machine allows for a changeover one shape to another one. It also features a compact design, and an integrated HMI.

PNEUMOFORE:

uV VAcuuM PuMPsPneumofore's air-cooled UV vacuum pumps combine high vacuum, largecapacity, fault-free performance and lower power consumption. Fea-turing the company’s rotary vane technology used since 1923, the pumps are applicable in both the processing and packaging stages of food manufacturing, such as reducing moisture and degassing. It also acts as a centralised solution, alternative to in-built pumps of existing systems.

The pumps allow air cooling through an aluminium cooler and a temperature controlled fan.

This eliminates problems linked to ambient temperature and unstable vacuum degree. The ‘closed-loop’ lubrication circuit also ensures negligible coolant consumption. It has single-stage suction volumes ranging from 250 m3 per hour to 3,240 m3 per hour. The maximum vacuum degree is 99.95 percent (0.5 m bar residual absolute pressure) with performance curves constant up to 95 percent.
