Our Beneficiary We will now be telling you about our beneficiary. Our beneficiary

is an organization called Beyond Social Services. It is a voluntary organization focused on helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds. This organization had the most emphasis and the same aim as our project.

The expectations of the Organization are very focused and we can see that their children will indeed benefit from our project based on the 5 expects above.

Information about the Children (Our Plans)

We are currently tutoring 3 kids, two of which are brothers. They are P2, P4, and a P5 respectively. All three of them come from either low income or a little below middle income families. They have learning difficulties and they take a slightly longer time to absorb information than other children.

The P4 and P5 brothers: They are Azrizal and Azridwan respectively. The P4 boy is slow in his thinking processes, while the P5 boy is weak in his knowledge of the subjects. We will bring the children to a void deck to carry out the tuition and it is conducted on a three-hourly basis every Monday. The two boys are generally weak in all three subjects: English, Math and Science.

The P1 boy: He is called Soliheen. He is generally in a middle income family and is slightly better than the P4 and P5 boys . The only problem is that his foundation in the subjects- Math and English is not strong enough. For the P1 boy, the tuition is conducted at his home. It is conducted on a two hourly basis every Saturday.

The beneficiaries homes are all located in Jalan Bukit Merah. (Delta Avenue)

Some Research We found out that one in ten children suffer from Dyslexia and the condition affects

mainly males. Dyslexia is a learning disability, where the brain misinterprets or processes the information it sees or hears, making it difficult for the sufferer to read, write, spell (especially similar sounding words), difficulty with word pronunciation.

Dyslexia does not affect the person IQ, in fact many dyslexics have above average IQ. Dyslexia is hereditary and unfortunately a life long condition, but if the sufferer learns how the dyslexia affects them, they can use a number of strategies to help them to learn, and gain a education and qualifications.

The exact figure of those affected will probably be never known, but it is believed that around 10% suffer from dyslexia in some form. An Estimation of a 15% of the population in Singapore have Dyslexia. In the UK, a staggering 1.5 million people suffer from learning difficulties.

Issue and Service goals After our first tutoring session with the kids, we found out that the main issue was

financial difficulties. The three students all expressed that they enjoyed learning and studying. However it was due to the lack of money that stopped them from pursuing their dreams. As they come from low-income families, they had barely enough money to support themselves. How would they even have the resources to pursue learning?

These disadvantaged children were not the ones who chose to give up learning, it was their financial situation which forced them to leave their dreams and to lose their self-confidence.

Thus with our help, we hope we can ignite their passion for learning and also to not give up despite their financial difficulties and to allow them to realize that they have the ability to excel in everything they do. Without our help, these children will be plunging themselves into further darkness and in the end, it may be too late to help them.

Target Audience Primary and secondary youths at risk of academic

failure, behaviour problems, emotional maladjustment, self-harm or delinquency.

Underprivileged children from low income families whose parents do not even have any levels of education at all.

Children with learning difficulties such as autism and dyslexia.

Methodology We will be tutoring the children for 8 months. On the first lesson, we

would start on English first, second lesson-Math and third lesson-Science. This cycle is repeated continuously.

Because of limited resources, we will be printing worksheets from the internet and also reusing our unfinished assessment books.

We will also be implementing interesting lessons such as hands-on Activities, Outings, Interactive games, discussions and use of short clips to further stimulate the children. At the start and end of the tuition programme, we will be giving the children test papers to do and we will be able to find out if the child has improved.

To help youths change to a better person and make a difference in their lives.

To help children with learning difficulties or from low income families in their academics.

Outcome of Project To have youths to believe in themselves and work hard to

succeed, and we hope to also ignite a passion in these students by teaching in many interactive and interesting ways such as the use of technology.

Most importantly, we hope that after this project, the students would greatly benefit and their usually poor grades would improve and they will be more confident of themselves and also to be more prepared for their PSLE.

Outcome of Project We hope that after working with those underprivileged students,

the team members will be more grateful and thankful to be able to enjoy such luxurious privileges and instead show sympathy and care about other children who might not be as advantaged as us. We want the team members to experience the life of an underprivileged and disadvantaged child.

We want the children to understand that there are still people who show care and concern about them. We want them to believe in themselves and strive their very best without giving up.

Most importantly, we hope that we can understand the importance of unity, teamwork and develop more friendships along the way.

Group Reflections for first session with P4 boy

This is our first time tutoring students. After the first session, we felt that it was a very meaningful experience for us as we got to interact with the boy (Azrizal) and help him to improve on his studies gradually. Before the session, we were very nervous on whether we would be good tutors to the child. We were also afraid that we might not be able to cope with the different problems and learning disabilities the child has. Initially, the boy was not very interested in learning English. However, after our self introductions and some of our explanations of the importance of English, the child started to realize the importance of learning and mastering English and began to listen to us attentively and learn with passion. At the end of the lesson, when we asked him to write s short reflection, he even wrote that he thoroughly enjoyed the lesson and the language and he was very happy and grateful towards us for teaching him. He ended the short note with words of Thanks.

We bonded with him that day and had so much fun, joy and laughter! We learnt plenty of things that day, on being patient with the boy and by explaining slowly and accurately to make sure the boy understand. We also learnt the joy of sharing and also how to motivate and encourage the boy to work hard and not give up. Although he was not very good in English, we are determined to help him improve. We asked him to do an assessment paper to test his abilities. Although he scored quite badly, we are sure that with the cooperation of everyone, the boy will succeed in the end! On that day, we also explained several grammar and vocabulary questions he got wrong. We hope that he would have a deeper understanding on English as a language. We are sure that with his determination and our encouragement, he will taste the fruits of his success!
