Teacher-CenteredLearningvs.Student-CenteredLearningwithAaronJamesTeachersoftenteachinthesamemannerinwhichtheyweretaught.Mostteachersrationalizethisbythinkingthat,“IfIlearnedinthisway,thenitmustbeagoodwaytoteach.”However,quiteoftenteachingintraditionalclassroomstylesonlyincreasesthechancesofcertaintypesoflearnerstosucceed.Teacher-centeredlearningisonesuchtraditionalmethodwhichfocusesontrainingthelearnerbyrote-learningandmemorization.Alternativeapproaches,whichincludestudent-centeredlearning/teachingandthecommunicativelanguageteachingmethod(CLT),havedevelopedtechniqueswhichcanfreetheteacherfromtheconstraintsoftraditionalpracticesbothteachersandlearnersareusedto,aswellasintroduceactivitiesandtaskswhichlearnersmightfindmoreinterestingandrelevanttotheirlearninggoals.Inthispresentation,Icontrastteacher-centeredandstudent-centeredlearning/teachingandprovidesomepracticalguidesforteacherstoaugment,revitalize,orincludeintheirpresentteachingmethodology,andpractice.

RoomAUsingWarm-UpActivitieswithLeanneCameronWarm-upactivitieshavetwoimportantpurposes:theyhelpenliventheclassroomandhelpstudentspreparefortheupcominglessons.Inthistraining,Leannewilldiscusstheimportanceofusingwarm-ups,offersomeexamples,andhelpteacherscreatetheirownactivitieswhichwillrelatetotopicsandlessonsintheirownclasses.RoomBSkills-Basedvs.Content-BasedTeachingwithJessicaGrinerTherearedistinctiveandfundamentaldifferencesinpedagogybetweenthosewhoadvocateacontent-ledapproachandthosewhoadvocateaskills-ledapproachtoteaching.Thepurposeoftheskills-ledapproachistoprioritizeanddeveloptransferableskillslikecollaborationandempathy.Incontrast,thepurposeoftheknowledge-ledapproachistoprioritizeandbuildculturalcapital:inEnglish,textual,contextualandgrammaticalknowledge–subject-specificcontent.Inthissession,wediscoverthemeaningofeachteachingapproachanddiscussskills-basedactivitiescanbeusefulinyourclassroom.RoomCClassroomManagementorMismanagement?withDavidLauchmenThisworkshopwillhelpattendeesdefineclassroommanagement,identifyitspurpose,andlearnhowtocreateandmaintaineffectiveclassroommanagement.

RoomACooperativeLearningReadingStrategiesfor3-6withJessicaGrinerCooperativereadingallowsstudentstosharethejoyofreadingwiththeirpeersandencourageeachotherincooperativelearningstrategies.Pairreading,groupreading,andotheractivitiespromotereadingskillsinhigherlevelstudentsandhelpunderperformingstudentsintheclassroom.Inthissession,wewilldiscussthemeaningofcooperativereadingandhowtoimplementcooperativestrategicreadingstrategiesinyourclassroom.RoomBDifferentiationandClassroomManagementwithAndurettevanderMerwe“Asateacherwhodifferentiatesinstruction,youbecomebothafacilitatorandacollaborator”(Heacox,2002).Notwochildrenarealike.Basedonthisprinciple,differentiatedteachingandlearningarecrucialtoensuringthat

RoomAPairandGroupWorkwithRobertPalisinWhenlearningasecondlanguage,aninteractiveclassroomforthestudentisessential.Studentsneedtheopportunitytopracticeanddevelopwhattheylearn.Inthissession,participantswilldiscusstheimportanceofpairandgroupwork,howtomanagethemeffectively,andtypesofactivitiesthatcanbedonewithinthiscontext.RoomBTeachingWithouttheTextbookwithSarahBakriThissessionisaboutusingresourcesotherthanthetextbooktocreatecurriculum.Iwilltalkaboutmyexperienceusingotherbooks,onlinevideosandauthenticmaterialtocreatecurriculumthatbettersstudents’livesandnotjusttheirmarks.Iwilltalkabouttakingtheinitiativetodevelopyourownmaterialsandmethods,andbeingconfidenttotrynewthings.RoomCTeacherTalk:EffectiveClassroomLanguagewithLeanneCameronHowdowecommunicatewithourstudents?Dotheyunderstandourdirections,anddoesourlanguageencourageordiscouragetheirlanguagedevelopment?Thosequestionswillbeconsideredinthistrainingon"teachertalk."Thistrainingwillhelpteachersthinkaboutanddeveloptheirclassroomlanguage.Leannewillfocusonusingpracticalapplicationactivitiestohelpteachersbemorecomfortableincommunicatingwiththeirstudentsforthesethreetasks:givingdirection,correctingerrors,andofferingcriticismorpraise.

RoomATeachersasRoleModelswithJocelynUrkowThissessionwillfocusontheimportantroleteachersplayaspartofchildren'slives.Studentsspendmuchoftheirtimewithteachersandarehighlyinfluencedbythem.Wewillexplorehowteacherscanbeeffectiverolemodelsforbehavior,skilldevelopmentandlearning.RoomBProfessionalGrowthwithMOOCswithCarolineSchneiderThissessionwillteachparticipantshowtouseMOOCs,orMassiveOpenOnlineCourses,whereeducatorscantakeonlinecoursesforfreefrominstitutionsaroundtheworldtofurthertheirownprofessionaldevelopment.RoomCAssessmentMethodswithRobertPalisinAssessmentisanecessarypartoftheclassroom,forbothstudentsandteachers.Inthispresentationtherewillbeadiscussionandfocusonformalandinformalmethodsthatcanbeusedtoassessstudentsintheclassroom,andhowtoputthisinformationtobestuse.

RoomAEffectiveFeedbackwithJessicaGrinerGivingourstudentseffectivefeedbackisimperative.Effectivefeedbackcangreatlyenhancelearningandimprovestudentachievementintheclassroom.Inthissession,wewilldiscussthedifferenttypesoffeedbackandhowtobestuseourtimeandenergywhendiscussingstudentoutcomesandgoals.RoomBReadingforEnglishLanguageLearnerswithRobertPalisinTheskillofreadingisachallengingbutnecessaryaspectofanyclassroom.Thepresenterwillcoverthevarioustypesofreadingsub-skillsthatarepracticedintheEnglishlanguagecontext,aswellasthevarietyofactivitiesthatareusedinpracticingthesesub-skills.RoomCUnderstandingDifferentLearningStyleswithLeanneCameronAsteachers,weknowthatnotallofourstudentslearnthesameway.Thissessionwillfocuson"multipleintelligences"asunderstoodthroughthetheoriesofHowardGardner.Wewillreviewtheeighttypesoflearningstylesandparticipantswillassesstheirownintelligencesandconsidertheirownlearningstyles,which,inturn,willmakethemmoreawareoftheirstudents'possiblelearningstyles.Wewilllookathowtomodifyactivitiestoappealtomultiplelearningstyles.
