TORIES SERIES is a group of booksarising out of the broad investigations ofthe Bell Telephone Lal)oratories, a research and development organizationwhose more than 4,000 scientists and engineers deal with every aspect of communications and allied fields. For almostthirty-five years the series has representedsome of the most notable contributions tothe literature of science and engineering.

Here, clearly and accurately presented, are theoretical and practical texts fromone of the world's greatest industriallaborator ies. The var ious authors are

recognized leaders in their respectivefie lds .

The continuing authority of the seriesis assured by careful revision as significant new developments take place. Titlesare added as new areas of scientific andtechnological activity are sufficiently del ineated for detai led discussion.

A complete list of titles now availablein THE BELL TELEPHONE LABORATORIES SERIES appears on the backpanel of this jacket.

This logically arranged be- k tiu; mostcomprehensive study of ; ' run tubesavailable today. Placing its ( ■ -is on thebasic physical principles in'.OiV,' . it avoidscomplicated and rigorous m ical analyses when simpler appro analysesare possible. Each presei f a tube-type demonstrates the way eleelron-fieldinteractions lead to useful performance fromthe device. Detailed descriptions of specifictubes appear as practical embodiments of theprinciples, and various tube-types are compared to show their relative advantages anddisadvantages for particular applications.

The first 13 chapters relate primarily tovacuum tubes. Beginning with a study ofelectrostatics, magnetostatics, and the basiclaws of electron motion, the book goes onto cathodes, electron guns, lenses, andmethods of beam confinement. Conventionaldiodes and grid-controlled tubes are described, and their high-frequency limitationsare explored by means of the concept ofinduced currents. An introduction to microwave circuits is followed by analyses of themicrowave tubes. This first section concludeswith a consideration of noise phenomena inelectron tubes, and the last four chaptersare concerned with gas discharge devicesincluding the Townsend discharge in a gasdiode, cold-cathode gas tubes, hot-cathodegas tubes, and gas lasers.

The book is a revision and extension ofnotes prepared by the authors for a coursegiven in the Communications DevelopmentTraining Program at Bell Telephone Laboratories. Numerous problems are provided toenhance its use as a textbook. Practicingengineers, especially those working onelectron-tube development and those usingelectron tubes as circuit elements, will findthis book to be of exceptional usefulness.1 7 5 9
