History of Religion

Really began w/the introduction of writing about 5200 yrs ago. Written record of human religious experiences and ideas. During the Middle Ages (15th century) you see many different split

off groups. The invention of the printing press was HUGE!

The 19th century saw a dramatic increase in knowledge of religious beliefs and began the spread across the world.

Organized religions emerged as a means of providing social and economic stability to large populations.

Religion has turned into a reflection of human society and cultural interaction (Social perspective)

These Five Things

1. Judaism is a monotheistic religion that was founded by Abraham, has a holy book called the Torah, and believes in a law code called the Ten Commandments.

2. Christianity is a monotheistic faith that believes Jesus is the son of God, had church councils define Christian faith, and focuses on life after death.

3. Islam is a monotheistic faith that believes Muhammed is the first prophet, has a holy book called the Qu’ran (Koran), has a code of conduct called the Five Pillars, and has two holy places of Mecca and Medina.

4. Christianity was located in Europe and the Middle East in 1500 C.E.; Christianity is located in the Americas and Europe today.

5. Islam was located in the Middle East, North Africa, and Southern Europe in 1500 C.E.; Islam is located in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East today.
