New Identifying and using conjunctions to express likes/dislikes

Adjectives used to express preferences

Pronunciation of new words will be practised through repetition (drilling)

• Teaching approach: Communicative Approach• Integration of skills: Listening mainly to the teacher and each

other during an interaction activity (Find Someone Who). Reading a short text about Harry Potter’s school preferences. Speaking and writing about their favourite subjects

• Materials and resources: pictures related to Harry Potter downloaded from the Internet1; worksheets assembled by the teacher, whiteboard, blu tack, and the class’ course book New Treetops 4.

• Pedagogical use of ICT in class or at home: not for this one• Seating arrangement: Horseshoe • Possible problems / difficulties and their possible solutions during

the class: students have taken more time than I planned to perform some activities; I will continue having them work in pairs. In order to avoid waste of time, I will ask their class’ teacher to ask them to change the seating arrangement 3 minutes before the English lesson starts.

• Classroom management strategies: horseshoe seating arrangement worked well during the previous lesson, I will resort to it again.

• Potential problems students may have with the language: students might have problems understanding the use of conjunctions, in this case I will apply them with a different topic such as have got which they have been dealing before; e.g. I have got a brother and a sister, I have got a cat but I haven’t got a dog

• Assessment: Recollection of previous class vocabulary will be assessed using visual aid. Understanding of conjunctions will be assessed through a gap filling exercise. I will attempt to correct every student’s production of the writing activity.

I will greet Ss and ask them how they are in L2 so as to let them know the lesson has started.

Warm-up 5’ Purpose: to recall previous lesson’s vocabulary related to Harry Potter and Hogwarts I will begin by showing students the picture of Harry Potter from previous lesson and stick them on the board while I prompt:‘Who did we talk about last class?’ Here I will put up Harry Potter’s picture EA ‘Harry Potter’ T ’Good’ Putting up Hogwarts crest ‘What school does he go to?EA ‘Hogwarts’T ‘Great! What sport do they play in PE class?’ I will show the quidditch ball picture.EA ‘Quidditch’T ‘Nice, and to play quidditch you need a …’ showing the picture of the broomstickEA ‘Broom’ Though they might have difficulties in recalling this particular wordT ‘And Harry has a pet, what kind of pet? Transition: Well done! We talked last class that Hogwarts is not a normal school; it’s a magic school for wizards.

Development

Activity 1 15’Purpose: to introduce conjunctions AND, BUT, and BECAUSE working with a short text about school subjects.I will say ‘At Hogwarts, students have different subjects. For example, they don’t play football in PE, they play quidditch. What other subjects are different?’ I will attempt to elicit this information from students’ previous knowledge. If they do not contribute, I will write some on the board in order to encourage them to participate. For instance,PotionsStory of MagicThen, I will say as I distribute the following paragraph ‘Let’s read about Harry Potter’s favourite subjects, this is his diary’I will ask one or two students to volunteer to read the passage. Ss are not used to talking or reading out loud. I will have them repeat words that are mispronounced, first altogether in order not to expose the learner that is reading at the moment.

I will draw Ss attention to the words in bold and provide them with examples which I will write on the board. Such asI like PE and ICTI like Geography, but I don’t like MatchI like History because it’s interesting

In case students cannot understand the difference between these conjunctions I will resort to ‘Family’ topic in order to make them clear. e.g. I have got a brother and a sister / I have got a dog but I haven’t got a cat.

I will ask two/three Ss ‘What are you favourite subjects? Why?’ In order to elicit answers where the use of these conjunctions are necessary.I will write these questions on the board in order to come back to them for the follow-up activity.

I will then ask students to glue the copy on their notebooks, copy the date and the following exercise to complete in pairs in order to assess understanding:• Complete the following statement using AND, BUT or BECAUSE1. I like Maths _________ Geography _________ they are very interesting.2. I don’t like History __________ I like English.3. I like Art ____________ it is exciting.4. I like PE __________ I don’t like Science.

I will monitor Ss and help them. I will also correct their work on their notebooks since it is an expectation they have from what I learnt the previous class.

Activity 2 10’

I will ask students to open their books at page 40 and complete the writing exercise. I will demonstrate the exercise with examples first, and then monitor and provide them with help when necessary. Again, I will attempt to correct everyone’s production.

Purpose: To have students apply the use of conjunctions by talking about their preferences.I will ask students work in pairs again. As they will be seating in a semicircle, I will tell them to work with their other partner; not the one they worked with during the previous activity.I will draw attention to the questions on the board and demonstrate with another student the following exchange (I will use prompt and help the student)T (Camila) What are your favourite subjects?S (Maths and Science)T Why?S (Because they are interesting)

Then I ask students to ask each other questions about their favourite subjects and the reasons why. I will underline the questions on the board so that they know which are the questions and delete part of the answers as they will be personal for each of them.

I will go around the circle listening to their conversations, checking understanding and pronunciation.

To close the lesson, I will tell everyone they did a great job and dismiss them since it is break time.
