Minot State University embarked on a bold initiative as it announced in November 2008

the new Grow North Dakota tuition plan which offers one flat tuition rate to all students.

This initiative has made it affordable for any student in the world to receive a top-notch

education from one of the premiere universities in the Great Plains. Whether students

are from Texas, Minnesota, China, Washington, Colorado, Saskatchewan, Manitoba,

Norway or Alberta, they will pay the North Dakota in-state tuition rate when they enroll

in on-campus courses. This is an exceptional value for students earning their undergrad-

uate and/or graduate degrees from Minot State University. The objective of the plan is

to bring more individuals to the state in hopes that they will make North Dakota their

home. Current North Dakota University System data indicate that non-resident students

are staying in the state after graduation, thus growing its population and workforce.

Extensive recruiting and marketing efforts have been focused in the state of Washington

and the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Letter from the President

e are pleased to share with you our annual

president’s report with its highlights from this very

busy and productive year at Minot State University.

Stories about our student achievements, new degrees, study-

abroad activities, grants and research, and services to our com-

munity offer an excellent overview of the diversity and richness

of the educational experience students find at our university.

Higher education is changing every day in what we know

about the world, in how we offer classes through enhanced

technology, and in the many ways we adapt and respond to

the changing needs of our society. This report includes stories

showing how we at Minot State are responding to these new

expectations of students and new societal demands. We take very

seriously our responsibility to contribute to our economy and

our culture, and we are doing well in that regard.

Our efforts continue to focus on improving our services and

raising the bar to new heights—all with the purpose of providing

a second-to-none educational experience for our students and

service to our region and the common good. Our outstanding

faculty and staff are staying at the forefront of these changes,

providing the best education and expecting the highest perfor-

mances from our students. That’s our No. 1 job.

At the same time as we pursue new directions, we are also

remaining steadfast in continuing to do what we know has

worked for years: focusing on friendly and caring support

and service for our students, building a strong and engaging

campus experience, continuing to offer stimulating academic

and cultural activities, highlighting the roles of academics and

athletics, restoring school spirit, working to make sure that our

campus remains beautiful and inviting, and focusing on our

historic mission to serve our students well. Our responsibility, as

we state in many of our publications and announcements, is for

our students to be seen and heard. That means that we see them

as individuals; we listen to them; and we care about their growth

and development as good people and citizens.

What you’ll read in these pages are stories about our respon-

siveness and changes, as well as our attention to the proven and

long-standing qualities of a college education. We also acknowl-

edge and thank the many alumni and friends in our donor lists

who continue to provide essential financial support for us to

accomplish many of these goals and to give our students

financial support to reach their personal goals. Thanks to each

and every one of you who generously donate to your university.

Finally, I want to say again how sad all of us were at the

news of the passing of our good friend and former president,

Dr. Gordon B. Olson. Gordon’s impact on our campus was

significant, and the influence of his personality and character

was profound. For me, he was a good friend and adviser, who

was not reluctant to call me often to discuss activities at the

university, to offer advice and encouragement. For that and

many other reasons, we will miss him, but our consolation is

that we will continue to see his many positive imprints across

our campus, in our programs, and in our tradition of serving our

students and our region.

Thank you again for all your support and your devotion to

Minot State University.

— DaviD Fuller, President

athletic training major

MSU prides itself on listening to its students.

When physical education students clamored for an athletic training major, the university developed a program that earned the approval of the State Board of Higher Education in February.

Thirty students are currently enrolled in an introductory course, with the promise of more to follow.

“There’s been quite an interest in this program,” said Heather Golly, the program’s director.

Students must take three introductory courses and then apply for admission to the program. Ten students will be admitted each spring semester.

Labor analysts forecast a 25 percent spike in athletic training jobs over the next decade. Trainers work in high schools, colleges, hospitals, medical clinics and industry.

New academic programs introduced“If you like to help people, it’s a great

career field,” Golly said. “We get a lot of athletes who don’t participate in athletics anymore but want to stay involved. They like the sports medicine aspect of it, taking care of injuries.”

MSU faculty will teach courses in the major, augmented by certified athletic trainers from Trinity Health. Golly herself is a former athletic trainer at Trinity.

Dr. Dawn Mattern of Trinity will serve as medical director for the new program.

The major will blend on-campus coursework with clinical experiences in the community. Students will work with physicians, athletic trainers and dietitians.

“One semester, they’ll learn the theory and application in a class. The next semester, they’ll apply the knowledge,” Golly said.

Besides taking coursework in the Teacher Education and Human Performance Department, majors will take classes in biology, chemistry, physics, psychology and nursing.

The new program will conduct a self-study for two years and then apply for accreditation by the Commission on

energy economics and finance

Tantalizing developments in North Dakota’s oil patch have not been lost on MSU’s College of Business.

The college just launched a new bachelor’s degree in energy economics and finance to prepare students to work in the state’s burgeoning energy industry.

The degree, which combines financial analysis with energy-related content, is the only one of its kind in the Great Plains region. Graduates will be qualified as financial or project analysts, energy economists, energy loan specialists or corporate planners.

“There’s a strong demand for both renewable and nonrenewable energy employees,” said Frank Moseley, the program’s director. “These energy jobs are well-paying jobs.”

Energy companies are currently drilling in the Bakken Formation, which occupies 200,000 square miles in the Williston Basin and covers parts of North Dakota, Montana and Saskatchewan.

Last year, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated that the Bakken could yield 3.0 to 4.3 billion barrels of oil.

Geologists are also exploring the Three Forks Formation, located 100 feet below the Bakken. They are trying to determine whether the formations are joined or not.

“The upside would be that they’re two separate structures,” Moseley said. “That doubles or triples the reserves.”

Students must complete general education and core business courses before they can apply to the new program. It will admit 20 students the first year and 25 each successive year. Competition for

slots promises to be intense.

College officials believe the pro-gram will attract students from energy-rich nations to study finance

at MSU, just as they gravitate to univer-sities in Texas and Oklahoma to study petroleum engineering.

“We’re expecting students from Venezu-ela, China, Australia, Norway, North Africa and the Middle East,” Moseley said.

Moseley spent 25 years in the energy business before switching to academia. He worked for multinational firms in the North Sea, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Australia. He founded an oil service company and has served on the boards of three petroleum companies.

The Louisiana native hopes his corporate contacts will fund student scholarships, endowed professorships and faculty-development initiatives.

“I’ve got the background to develop this program,” he said.

“ There’s a strong demand for both renewable and nonrenewable energy employees. ”

Stepping up for a community in needSpring flooding greeted many North Dakotans in 2009. Minot

and its surrounding communities were no exception. But in times of great need, people step up to perform great deeds of service. Minot State employees and students dedicated hundreds of hours to sandbagging and flood prevention. On multiple occasions, the call went out for volunteers, and the response was immediate.

One such story of service, titled “Deluge of human kindness,” reached a national magazine, with the focus on assisting one of MSU’s own, Cheryl Gerard, professor of communication disorders.

In early April, Ward County officials offered sandbags to residents whose houses were in danger from a Souris River crest. But there was one caveat — residents had to pick up the 5-pound bags and put them in place themselves. That’s where Gerard was stuck. With limited equipment and the realization that she must do something to save her house and barn, she e-mailed her department colleagues, “All help is appreciated.”

What happened next redefined Gerard’s definition of commu-nity spirit. Not only did her colleagues come to her aid, but one of them also forwarded her message to the undergraduate and graduate students in the department. On April 8, Gerard was shocked when more than 50 students arrived at her house with trucks, muscles and the willingness to help. They even returned the following night – and brought their friends.

“I was stunned,” Gerard said. “I tried doing it myself on Monday. On Tuesday, some of my yoga friends came over, but Wednesday. Wow! All these students showed up, and I didn’t even know all of them! They just were there to help.”

And the help paid off. Altogether, the volunteer crew put up 10,000 sandbags and, as the Souris crested on April 14 and Gerard’s yard and now-evacuated barn began to fill with water, the sandbags held.

Today, Gerard’s life has pretty much gone back to normal, but she is still awed by the selfless help provided by her students and colleagues.

“I have never felt more loved or more blessed. I know it sounds hokey, but I couldn’t believe people I didn’t know were helping me,” Gerard said.

“This is my wake-up call — you always help other people. (North Dakota) maybe doesn’t have mountains, but it has monumental people.”

Student honored for chemistry research

Steven Lewis is a chemistry major at Minot State University. Since the fall semester of 2007, he has been working on a research project in the lab of Dr. Mikhail Bobylev, an associate professor of chemistry and an INBRE-funded researcher at Minot State. Lewis’ research is producing highly valuable results.

Lewis first presented his results last fall at the fourth-annual northwest regional meeting at Minnesota State University-Moorhead. Lewis’ poster, titled “Application of the Accelerated Leuckart Reaction to Substituted Benzaldehydes,” won first place. He also received a travel award from the Red River Valley Section of the American Chemical Society to present his work at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C., in August.

Lewis was also selected for the 2009 Posters on the Hill presentation in Washington, D.C., in May. About 60 undergraduate students were selected from across the country to present their research to members of Congress. The students and their faculty advisers spent a day at the Capitol, first meeting with their state representatives and senators and then presenting their research during a poster session.

Lewis presented his work at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C., in August. Besides his travel award for the best poster presentation, Lewis’ trip to the national meeting was supported by another travel award from the American Chemical Society, which he received as vice president of the MSU student chapter of the American Chemical Society. His trip to the meet-ing was also supported by grants from local businesses, specifically Industrial Builders Inc. and the Archer Daniels Midland Biodiesel Company.

Minot State University President David Fuller and the

university’s Vision 2013 were highlighted in the October

2008 issue of American Executive magazine. The article,

titled “Agent of Change,” helps readers understand the

rationale behind Vision 2013 and why Fuller values its

potential to invigorate the campus and community.

“A key component to the success of these strategies . . .

is the willingness of the faculty, staff and students to do

their part to transform MSU into a place that not only

produces university graduates but also agents of change,”

wrote Amanda Gaines, the article’s author.

Along with this magazine piece, the new Grow

North Dakota initiative received positive mention in an

Associated Press article that ran in USA Today, Chicago

Tribune, Kansas Star and other Midwest newspapers.

To top it off, MSU was chosen to air a five-minute story

on how the university is meeting the needs of the region.

Titled “The Economic Report with Greg Gumbel,” this

video aired on cable tv in major cities across the country,

including Minneapolis, Portland, Chicago and Seattle.

In addition, it aired all across Arizona and Utah. As a

result, Minot State is able to share its message with a

broader audience and allow students and families from

the Great Plains and the rest of the country to know

what makes MSU a premier, regional university.

Study-abroadDozens of Minot State students took big steps outside of their comfort zones this past year to experience other cultures in study-abroad adventures.

In a continual effort to help students

understand the world they live in,

study-abroad experiences were made

available to students interested in

studying in Spain, Morocco and Peru.

Kemerly Moorhouse, a Spanish

instructor, spent a fun-filled month in

Peru, her homeland. Along with six

students, she spent weekdays studying

culture and language and on week-

ends visited locations like Cusco, the

Nazca lines and the lost city of the

Incas, Machu Picchu. Despite a busy

schedule, they still found time to blog

about their trip on the Minot State

Web site.

For 10 days, MSU students studied

the culture surrounding the Iberian

Peninsula. Andrea Donovan,

assistant professor of art history

and humanities, led the trip to

western Europe and northern Africa.

The students were able to experience

the Spanish cities of Madrid, Seville

and Barcelona, along with a trip south

to the Moroccan village of Tetouan.

Not all international students

were tied to a specific summer study-

abroad program. Some Minot State

students spent months gaining an

education at one of the university’s

partner schools. Bethany Stai, a senior

business major, and Cassandra

Neuharth, a junior communication

arts major, spent the spring studying

at Kristianstad University College in

Sweden. They lived in an international

student house with students from

across the globe, completely immersed

in the surrounding culture.

Moving to DIIMinot State University is at the beginning of a three-year membership process into the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II. This summer, the NCAA Membership Committee informed MSU it would

be entering year-one candidacy for NCAA Division II during the 2009-2010 season. The decision to apply for Division II membership came after four years of research. During the decision-making process, the university was advised by committees from Minot State, the community and Beaver Booster Club. Minot State is one of seven colleges and universities selected from the 15 that applied to NCAA Division II in 2009. We’re proud of the high athletic standard held at MSU and

are grateful for the time and work put into our research and application. We recognize the long-standing relationship MSU has had with the NAIA and the Dakota Athletic Conference and are appreciative of the decision to keep us as a postseason-eligible member for the upcoming seasons. The next three years of conditional and provisional membership will give us a wonderful opportunity to strengthen our athletic program and the Minot State experience for all our students, as we get ready for NCAA Division II.

Leadership is action, not positionWhen it comes to generating enthusiasm in others, motivating team members to achieve a goal, or introducing creative ideas for successful adventures, Ken Story takes the lead. Story graduated from Minot State University in May 2009 with more than an undergraduate degree. He left with a degree in energy and vision. Story left his mark at MSU by leading the Student Government Association, the Young Democrats, Delta Epsilon Chi and several other campus organizations. His university experiences paid priceless dividends, when he was selected by U.S. Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., to serve in the Stennis Program for Congressional Interns this summer. Story’s leadership and dedication to North Dakota continues, as he assumes the role of the North Dakota Student Association president for the 2009-10 year.

Teleaudiology contractThe North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities

(NDCPD) was awarded an exclusive two-year $196,179 contract with the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resource Services Administrationin September 2008. This contract has put NDCPD and MSU in a unique position to establish standards that will be utilized by professionals nationwide.

NDCPD will develop protocols using the Internet to diagnose hearing loss in infants. Pediatric audiologists control the evaluation equipment, using computer technology from a

distant location. This allows parents to remain closer to home. National goals are to have all infants’ hearing screened by one month, hearing loss diagnosed by three months and inter-vention in place by six months.

Minot infant Development Program: 30 years of service to children and families

A 30th-anniversary celebration was held in September 2008 for the Minot Infant Development Program (MIDP). MIDP is funded by the North Dakota Department of Human Services to support activities that identify infants (birth-3 years) who are developmentally delayed, high risk or at risk.

MIDP staff members assist parents and caregivers in identifying natural learning opportunities that occur throughout their child’s daily routines and guide them in using these opportunities to

enhance the child’s development. In addition, MIDP personnel help parents in finding support available through local, state and national programs to help their child’s developmental issues. Specialists in the areas of cognitive development, speech and language, audiology, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, nutrition and social-emotional work one on one with the children and their parents. Nearly all the training is done in the child’s natural environment. Through early intervention, a child can be taught specific techniques for learning in the first years before bad habits develop. In some cases, the intervention may alleviate many problems that may have occurred if the child had not been enrolled. Over 30 years, the MIDP has served more than 1,100 children and their families and has provided evalua-tion services to hundreds of others living in a seven-county area of north central North Dakota.

Grants

10

Page 13: President's Report - Minot State University

13

North Dakota Medicaid infrastructure grant

NDCPD’s North Dakota Medicaid Infrastructure Grant (ND MIG), which began in 2001, is

funded by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services — Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. ND MIG’s current annual funding is $750,000. The purpose of the ND MIG grant is to remove barriers to employment, so people with disabilities can work competitively in their communities.

ND MIG collaborates with state partners and policy makers to address systems-change issues, which include improving access to health care, affordable and accessible housing, personal care services in the workplace, benefits-planning information, and implementation of best-practice employment training and support. ND MIG assisted in the passage of the N.D. Workers with Disabilities Medicaid Coverage (Medicaid Buy-In) in 2004, making health-care coverage more affordable for working individuals with disabilities.

In addition, ND MIG completed and disseminated research reports regarding Medicaid, long-term care, and home- and community-based services in North Dakota.

Math grant impacts North Dakota educators and students

Minot State University has a successful history of educating K-12 mathematics teachers across the state. Each year, up to 100 K-12 teachers participate in Minot State’s mathematics coursework that can be used toward two graduate degree programs — Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics and Master of Education Mathematics Concentration for Elementary and Middle School Teachers. These programs are currently grant-funded for N.D. teachers. The grant pays all participants’ costs and stipends, making it possible for teachers with financial constraints to participate.

The programs’ coursework bolsters teachers’ confidence and competence with mathematical content, which is translated into more effective and engaging instruction for their students. Feed-back from teacher participants indicates that the program has enhanced their teaching techniques, increased student test scores and engaged students more in the learning process.

Dr. Gordon B. Olson died in late June at the age of 84. For 25 years, he cast a towering shadow over Minot State University as it confidently grew in enrollment, programs and facilities.

Like most people, Olson was a tangle of contradictions and inconsistencies.

He was a rough-cut giant who was at home hunting in the wilds of his native North Dakota, yet he also maintained a rich life of the mind, nourishing it through the quiet pleasure of reading.

He was a savvy administrator adept at working the levers of political power, yet he also had a common touch with people of all social and political stripes.

Three former colleagues recently shared their memories and impressions of Olson, trying to separate the man from the myth.

Garnet Cox worked with Olson for 25 years as the university’s dean of women. Gary Leslie was an instructor, coach and administrator at Minot State for 36 years. Joe Wax served at the school for 30 years, mostly as director of the innovative Campus Lab School.

Dr. Gordon B. OlsonPresident Emeritus 1967 – 1992

Page 15: President's Report - Minot State University

1 3

GregariousnessCox: “He knew everybody. He knew their family, their grand-parents, who homesteaded where.”

Leslie: “There were very few people that he’d meet and he didn’t know their names. He always had a story to tell about somebody because he knew everybody.”

Wax: “He’d know everybody we’d run into. He had a phenom-enal memory for faces and names. You had to wait around while he had a small conversation.”

Management styleLeslie: “He ran (the university) like a school principal. Some people thought he was micromanaging.”

(On one occasion, a faculty member who lived out of town failed to make it to campus during a blizzard. In a blistering memo to the faculty, Olson stressed that this would not be tolerated. At the time, Olson and much of the student body lived on campus, and underground tunnels connected classroom buildings.) “Olson moved off campus. The next year we got a blizzard, and he closed the school down.”

Wax: “He told me that a couple of people came in and suggested that he fire me. He said, ‘I threw them out of my office.’ He didn’t take kindly to being told what to do.” “He wasn’t bossy. He would discuss things with people before he would act. He was not arbitrary.”

Cox: “He was not a manager; he was a leader. There’s a big difference.”

“He trusted you to do your job, and he gave you the freedom to do it.” “He had definite plans for Minot State, but it was not a personal agenda. He included everybody.”

People skillsWax: “He was a country boy. In the old days, you had to get along with your neighbors. You just had to because none of you had enough money to have all the equipment. So you would borrow his cultivator, and he’d borrow your rake.”

Cox: “He was very upfront in dealing with people. You knew where you stood. He enjoyed exchanging ideas and opinions with people, even when you didn’t agree with him.” “He had a way of making people feel welcome and comfortable.” “He could be intimidating, but he had a soft side, too. He was not afraid to show it.”

(When Olson learned that Cox as dean of women was earning a lower salary than the dean of men, he rectified the situation.) “That didn’t happen with a lot of administrators. He had a kind, caring heart for people.”

(During the student protests of the late 1960s, a Minot State student tried to rip down the American flag. When he heard about it, Olson, a World War II veteran, bounded out of his office to confront the student.) “His neck and face got red. He said to the student, ‘Do you have a problem with our flag?’ There was dead silence. The student said, ‘No, I don’t.’ Gordon responded, ‘You’d better not have!’ The student turned and left. That was the only time I saw him with fire in his eyes.”

Leslie: “He was straightforward with you. He had a temper.” “Olson once said, ‘Where I grew up, if you mouthed off, someone would smack you. It made you more cautious about what you said before you said it.’”

inquisitivenessCox: “He would get all kinds of mail. He would pass that on to us. He kept up to date and kept everybody else up to date.”

Wax: “He was always purchasing books. He had several periodicals that he subscribed to. You could hardly go with him anywhere without him saying, ‘Say, the other day I read … ’ and then proceed to tell you what he read. He was an avid reader.”

GunsLeslie: “He could tell you by the serial numbers of certain guns how they would shoot.”

Cox: (During hunting season, students would often bring rifles to campus. They didn’t want to leave them in their pickup trucks for fear of theft, and college regulations barred their storage in residence halls. Olson resolved the dilemma). “We stored them in a closet in Gordon’s office because he knew guns.”

Final thoughtsCox: “Most people had a great deal of admiration and respect for Gordon Olson. It was because of the way he treated people and the way he lived. He earned their respect.” “He was a very special person. He was my friend.”

Leslie: “If there was money available, it didn’t go into buildings and grounds. It went to take care of the faculty and staff. They came before everything else.”

Wax: “I miss the bugger. He was a unique individual.”

Dave and Dolly Gowan, Minot, felt compelled to give back to Minot State University, their alma mater. Dave and Dolly believe a sound education is essential for a successful future. They also believe Minot State is a top-notch higher education institution that provides the business sector with well-prepared workers. Today, the David and Dolly Gowan Endowment gives Nicole Ziler, a sophomore from Sidney, Mont., the ability to earn a marketing degree while participating as a student- athlete in softball. Ziler is pictured here with Gowan.

Alumni and friends continue to provide financial assistance through annual donations for MSU students and the university. These contributions are vital for a solid future for Minot State. Cash donations, endowments, gifts of property, bequests, annuities and trusts all are vehicles to match the dreams of our donors with the needs of our students. Gifts can be made conveniently at www.minotstateu.edu/alumni.html or by contacting the Advancement Office.

Grow North Dakota is a vision of Minot State University — more students and more workers for North Dakota. To achieve this vision, MSU implemented a new tuition program that makes it affordable for students from anywhere in the United States, Canada, China, Spain or elsewhere in the world to earn their degree at MSU. All students enrolled in campus courses pay MSU’s in-state tuition rate. Another great example of how MSU is becoming a premiere institution on the great Great Plains.
