The biophysical environment can vary in scale from microscopic to global in extent. 3

  • Environmental Pollution The Bharat Scouts & Guides, Karnataka Satyajit Chatterjee One of the greatest problems that the world is facing today is that of environmental pollution, increasing with every passing year and causing grave and irreparable damage to the earth. Environmental pollution consists of five basic types of pollution, namely, air, water, soil, noise and light. 5

  • Forms of Pollution The Bharat Scouts & Guides, Karnataka Satyajit Chatterjee Air pollution: Air pollution is caused by harmful gases such as carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide carbon monoxide and very small particles of carbon. Most of the pollution is caused by factories and vehicles. Air pollution may cause breathing problems such as asthmaor other health problems. The three main substances that pollute water are nitrates from fertilizers, sewage and detergents. [1] Pollution causes harm to organisms living in water and can also harm people's health.   • The Bharat Scouts & Guides, Karnataka Satyajit Chatterjee Noise pollution Noise pollution (also known as sound pollution) is noises in the environment that are harmful to humans and animals. They include the sound of vehicles, loud speakers, etc. Noise pollution can cause ear problems or even permanent deafness, especially to older people. Soil pollution Soil pollution is when man-made chemicals, such as hydrocarbons, heavy metals, solvents, get into the soil. These chemicals come from industrial activities and from bad waste disposal. Soil pollution may cause health risks. The chemicals can produce harmful vapors, or they can contaminate water supplies underneath the polluted soil.soilwaste disposal Plastic pollution Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic products in the environment that adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habitat, or humans. 7

  • The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 The Bharat Scouts & Guides, Karnataka Satyajit Chatterjee An Act to provide for the protection and improvement of environment and for matters connected there with: WHEREAS the decisions were taken at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held at Stockholm in June, 1972, in which India participated, to take appropriate steps for the protection and improvement of human environment; AND WHEREAS it is considered necessary further to implement the decisions aforesaid in so far as they relate to the protection and improvement of environment and the prevention of hazards to human beings, other living creatures, plants and property; 9

  • Role of Scouts & Guides in Protecting Environment The Bharat Scouts & Guides, Karnataka Satyajit Chatterjee Fifth sub part of the Scout/Guide Law says, A Scout /Guide is a friend to animal and loves nature. Proficiency Badges: Community worker; Sanitation Promoter; Ecologist, Gardener, etc. Active participation in Community development projects Educating people about pollution problems in area. Awareness and solution of problems viz. Soil Erosion; Tree Cutting; Animal Killing; Wastage of Water; Water pollution; Air Pollution; Littering etc. Mass street play and mime show. 10
