Sometimes you have to think outside the box.

There are many different Spanish speaking countries that often get over looked. Many times we get wrapped up in the United States and Mexico and forget about Latin America. There is a lot that has happened in Latin America that is very important to U.S. history.

Effects on the United States.

The Cuban Revolution brought about the Cuban Missile Crisis which was a very trying time for the united States in October of 1962.The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. The United States armed forces were at their highest state of readiness ever and Soviet field commanders in Cuba were prepared to use battlefield nuclear weapons to defend the island if it was invaded.

The Guerrillas of El Salvador were mostly children barely over the age of 10 and 11 fighting for freedom and their lives. United States and Latin American forces swept through El Salvador with massacres that killed more than thousands of innocent civilians. Among most were defenseless women and children. Some of the children weren’t even born and still in the mother’s womb.

La Violencia, “The Violence” started in 1948 and lasted until 1958. The drug wars hit Colombia very hard forcing chaos and distribution among the people. Famers saw a chance to cash in the coca crop, the main ingredient in cocaine and took the opportunity. The aftermath can still be felt today in the U.S. and around the world.
