Education as a Social Institution Social institutions are an important

element in the structure of human societies. They provide a structure for behavior in a particular part of social life. The five major social institutions in large societies are family, education, religion, politics, and economics. While each institution does deal with a different aspect of life, they are interrelated and intersect often in the course of daily life.

Page 6: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

Social institutions affect individual lives through other aspects of society such as culture, socialization, social stratification, and deviance. Education plays a large part in the socialization of children into society

Page 7: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

The term "institution" commonly applies to both informal institutions such as customs, or behavior patterns important to a society, and to particular formal institutions created by entities such as the government and public services. Primary or meta-institutions are institutions such as the family that are broad enough to encompass other institutions.

Definition in sociology

As structures or mechanisms of social order, they govern the behavior of a set of individuals within a given community. Institutions are identified with a social purpose, transcending individuals and intentions by mediating the rules that govern living behavior.

Types of educational institution Informal Institution informal institutions such as customs, or behavior

patterns important to a society. Informal institutions have been largely overlooked

in comparative politics, but in many countries it is the informal institutions and rules that govern the political landscape. To understand the political behavior in a country it is important to look at how that behavior is enabled or constrained by informal institutions, and how this affects how formal institutions are run. For example, if there are high levels of extra judicial killings in a country,

What is education ?

Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits.

The word "education" is derived from the Latin “educatio” which mean training.

Education began in prehistory, as adults trained the young in the knowledge and skills deemed necessary in their society.

Page 13: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

Education, in a very general sense can be summed up at a basic level as referring to an experience or act that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. In the sense that it is formative means that education is serving to form something and particularly something that will have a long lasting effect on the persons mind and faculties. The most obvious example of this is the ability to understand and use language and mathematics a skill which is then utilized throughout an individual’s life.

Education in sociology

The sociology of education is the study of how public institutions and individual experiences affect education and its outcomes. It is mostly concerned with the public schooling systems of modern industrial societies, including the expansion of higher, further, adult, and continuing education.

Page 15: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

Education within a social and cultural context

Within the social and cultural context, education can be seen as the process by which society transmits its accumulated knowledge, values and skills from one generation to the next. In this sense education is not only used to instill the values and norms of a given society, but is also an important element of the socialization process. Different forms of education have different structures of learning that define the learning process and what is seen as educational achievement.

Page 16: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

Educational systems are not just about teaching people subjects, they are also about socializing people and transferring the value systems of the society in which they are situated. We believe that other forms of education such as learning through informal networks, home teaching, popular education, forum theatre and other alternative forms of education are much more inclusive and empowering than western mainstream education.

Page 17: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

Education does not have to be an individualistic, meritocratic experience, it can be cooperative, inclusive and community minded. Conventional education fails many people and writes them off when they do not conform to the rigid structures and expectations. Alternative methods of education can do the opposite and deliver education in more inclusive ways that is flexible and responsive.

Page 18: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

Why is education important for developing a permanent culture

Without education the development of a Permanent Culture would be impossible. Education is needed to transmit the newly evolved ideas and practices that emanate from different streams of thought and disciplines. Similarly, education illuminates histories that can inform and inspire our actions to move towards a sustainable future, it can show us the successes and failures of approaches that have attempted to change the world.

Online education There are many terms for online education. Some of

them are: virtual education, Internetbased education, web-based education, and education via computer-mediated communication

Hence, online education is characterized by: • the separation of teachers and learners which distinguishes it from face-to-face education • the influence of an educational organization which distinguishes it from self-study and private tutoring • the use of a computer network to present or distribute some educational content • the provision of two-way communication via a computer network so that students may benefit from communication with each other, teachers, and staff

Page 58: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

Types of online education

• Distance Learning• Virtual schooling• Blended Learning• E-Learning• M-Learning

Page 59: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

Distance learning

A method of studying in which lectures are broadcast or classes are conducted by correspondence or over the Internet, without the student's needing to attend a school or college. Also called distance education.

Page 60: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

Virtual Schooling Some schools use internet resources, such as

online lessons, teacher support online, or online homework systems, but a fully online school (virtual school or cyber-school) teaches entirely or primarily through online methods. That is, physical interaction by students and teachers is unnecessary, or only supplementary. A fully online school enables individuals to earn transferable credits or to take recognised examinations, to advance to the next level of education

Page 61: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

Blended learning Blended learning is an education program

(formal or informal) that combines online digital media with traditional classroom methods requiring the physical presence of both teacher and student, with some element of student control over time, place or path. While students still attend "brick-and-mortar" schools with a teacher present, face-to-face classroom practices are combined with computer-mediated activities regarding content and delivery. Blended learning is also used in professional development and training settings

Page 62: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

E-learning E-learning is here defined as interactive learning in

which the learning content is available online and provides automatic feedback to the student’s learning activities. Online communication with real people may or may not be included, but the focus of e-learning is usually more on the learning content than on communication between learners and tutors.

E-learning: Covers a wide set of applications and processes, such as Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classrooms, and digital collaboration. It includes the delivery of content via Internet, intranet/extranet (LAN/WAN), audio- and videotape, satellite broadcast, interactive TV, and CD-ROM.

Page 63: presentation by mudassar Ali cIIT aBBOTTABAD

M-learning E-learning: Covers a wide set of applications and

processes, such as Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classrooms, and digital collaboration. It includes the delivery of content via Internet, intranet/extranet (LAN/WAN), audio- and videotape, satellite broadcast, interactive TV, and CD-ROM.

M-learning technologies include handheld computers, MP3 players, notebooks, mobile phones and tablets. M-learning focuses on the mobility of the learner, interacting with portable technologies. Using mobile tools for creating learning aids and materials becomes an important part of informal learning.
