INTELLECTUAL ACTIVITY #1

What was the First Social Network on the Internet?

The first social media site that everyone can agree actually wassocial media was a website called Six Degrees. It was namedafter the ‘six degrees of separation’ theory and lasted from 1997to 2001. Six Degrees allowed users to create a profile and thenfriend other users. Six Degrees even allowed those who didn’tregister as users to confirm friendships and connected quite afew people this way.

From Six Degrees, the internet moved into the era of bloggingand instant messaging. Although blogging may not seem likesocial media precisely, the term fits because people weresuddenly able to communicate with a blog other instantly as wellas other readers. The term “blog” is a form of the phrase“Weblog” which was coined by Jorn Barger, an early blogger thatwas the editor of the site “Robot Wisdom.”

From there, ICQ was born and most members of Generation Xremember ICQ and the service that was created shortlythereafter, America Online, with AOL’s instant messengerespecially prominent in the social media lineup.

THE CYBERSIVE REVOLUTION

https://www.bbvaopenmind.com/en/impact-of-the-

technological-revolution/

But what is cybernetics?, what kind of discipline can be at the origin of the changes that today defyhumanity, changes in the world of everyday, in the way of interrelating and communicating, as well aschanges That have come to affect the way of doing science? The word cybernetics is of Greek origin andoriginally meant helmsman. But it was a very peculiar kind of helmsman, he was an expert who had tocontrol and coordinate oars, rudder and sail to drive a ship across the Mediterranean. Wiener rescuedthis word to denote what he defined as "the science of control and communication in the machine and theanimal“.

The development and application of cybernetics during the '50s and' 60s allowed the advent ofautomobile washing machines, automatic doors, computer, internet, robotics and almost all theinventions of the last five decades. That is why the cybernetic revolution is often compared to theindustrial revolution, but its contribution is not limited to the world of technology; On the contrary, itsmost radical and profound contribution is the comparison with another period of intellectual revolution:the Renaissance.

Wiener defined cybernetics as the science of control in machine and animal, with the implicit purpose ofproposing a logical-mathematical-systemic-interdisciplinary science of mind. Along with Wiener, it isconsidered that the other parents of this discipline were John von Neumann, Warren McCulloch andClaude Shannon. The orientation that each one would give to the Cybernetics corresponds closely withthe areas in which it has been used. John von Neumann, for example, is considered to be the father of thedigital computer. Shannon's papers, for their part, laid the theoretical basis for the development of digitaltelecommunications, including the Internet. Finally, Warren McCulloch was the precursor of the currentorientation of cybernetics, under the most recent name of "cognitive sciences". He was interested in thestudy of nervous systems and cognition, and was the first scientist who proposed to call this field of study"experimental epistemology“.
