Question 1 Before filming the preliminary task we had to do planning and research to make sure that we had the understanding of how to film and how to make it effective. For me, I started by researching well known and popular thriller films, I chose to research The Third Man and Casino Royale. From this I was able to look at the camera shots that their directors used and for what effect. For Casino Royale, the director used a lot close up camera angles to allow the audience to identify the emotion of that character at that certain point. The also used over the shoulder shots to put the audience in the position f the character in the scene. As a group we wanted to use these techniques in our film to create the same result.

Another factor that I had to take into account was continuity. The problem with this was that the filming was going to have to take place over a couple of weeks, therefore when it came to costumes we had to make sure we were wearing the same thing each time we were going to film, this way the film wouldn't look tacky and unprofessional. we also had to think about continuity for the scenery of the film. by this I mean that we couldn't film the same scene on two different days to make sure that the weather was the same and the people in the background were the same.

Question 2the 180 degree rule is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. if the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects then this is called crossing the line and could confuse the audience watching because they might not understand that the camera has switch sides and the characters are on the other side.

This is an example of where we used the 180 degree rule in our own production.

Question 3When filming and planning the preliminary task, we knew we want to include as many different camera angles and shots as we could. That way we would be able to practice those shots for the thriller opening task, and also show that we are capable of using these camera angles and shot effectively. In the first shot that we filmed, we instantly used a extreme long shot and a long shot. This gave a good start to show the title as there wasn't much going on and it fitting the purpose well. Straight after the long shot, it switches to a birds eye view shot, which worked really well as the shot puts the audience in a position as if they are watching the character from afar, looking down on the main character making the character seem innocent and non-powerful. When the character realises that he is missing his pen a close-up shot of his face was used to show the confusion and worry that the character is going through at that moment. This works really well because the camera if focusing on the face, which makes the audience concentrate on it as well. As the character is in a rush to retrieve the pen, we decided it was a good time to used a tilt shot. This was because the tilt shot is usually used to show that something is going wrong or is going to go wrong. Therefore it was the right time to use that shot in our film. Also the fact that we used a long corridor to shoot the shot made the problem seem as if it was going to last longer, creating tension and suspense. This is then followed by a tracking shot of feet. This creates a build up of tension as you don’t know what is going on around the character or where they are going. The character then confronts the person that has stolen their pen. In these next few shots, we had to use our knowledge of the 180 degree rule and shot reverse shot to create the conversation. Within this conversation we used a over the shoulder shot to put the audience in the perspective of the main character, but also in terms of an over the shoulder shot it is quite a distant one. Therefore it makes the audience also feel that they are in that room as well as the other two characters. Just before the dramatic moment we used an extreme close up of both of the characters. This shot intensifies the scene creating tension and suspense. Making the shot black & white shows that the scene is serious and focuses on the emotion of the character.

Question 4When it came down to editing the film we had to use a software called Adobe Premiere Pro. It was my first ever using Premiere Pro, this meant that it took me a little while to get used to the controls and different editing skills and techniques that you could use on it. Although this was good practice for the future it meant that I had a slight slow start to the editing of the film. As I learnt more and more about Premiere Pro, I was about to learn edit skills/ techniques that were going to help make my film look more professional and fix any problem found when filming it. One of the first skills that I learnt and used in Premiere Pro was the use of key frames. This allows you to place certain effects within shots and scenes, such as if you want the sound to decrease or increase in volume you can put the a key frame as volume at 100% at the beginning of the frame and then a key frame at 0% at the end of the frame to make the volume steadily decrease throughout the frame. To find these key frames you could go into the effect control tab once you have highlighted the frame that you want to edit. Another skill I developed was the use of cropping frames. This was really useful to know how to do because a lot of our shots needing cropping because of certain parts we didn’t want in them or didn’t fit the next frame or the one before. Although it was quite easy to get the hang of it was an important skill that I had to learn to use properly.

Question 5Adding effects onto the preliminary task allowed us to enhance the footage that we had taken, to make the shots more effective. One of the main effects that we used in our edit was Fade in and Fade outs. We used this effect in the close up of Isaac and Harry, this way it was a easy transition which drew out the tension and the suspense of the moment. In the same scene we added another effect, we chose to change it in black & white. By doing this he effect increases the tension and suspense as it focuses on the emotion of the character in that shot.

Just after the birds eye view shot of the two main characters fighting each other, we chose to reduce the speed and make the shot in slow-motion, thisway it drags out the dramatic moment and make a more dramatic ending to the film as the ending is stretched out.
