What is NRoSO?A central register of sprayer operators using Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as a means of ensuring ongoing training.

Who Can Join?The scheme is open to anybody who holds an appropriate NPTC PA certificate of competence, or was born before 31st December 1964 and is applying pesticides under “Grandfather Rights”.

What is involved?As a member you are required to collect 30 or more CPD points in each three-year period to qualify for membership renewal.

What is BASIS?BASIS® is an independent organisation set up at the suggestion of the UK Government in 1978 to establish and assess standards in the pesticide industry relating to storage, transport and competence of staff.

Who Can Join?The scheme is open to anybody who works in the pesticide, fertiliser and allied industries.

What is involved?A range of examinations and recognised qualifications can be gained.

AgLeader Integra All in one Integra The AgLeader Integra, which is sold in the UK by Precise Solutions, has a 12.1in HD colour, touch-screen display. The terminal is ISObus compatible, includes an integral lightbar for guidance and will operate and control a wide range of functions. It provides assisted steering via the OnTrac2+ system that fits to the steering column, as well as fully ‘plug-and-play’ integrated auto-steer with the ParaDyme system, which also includes the Logic 7D system that measures and compensates for vehicle pitch, roll and yaw. It is one of the few consoles that also includes yield monitoring, providing the ability to measure and map yields and moisture levels in real time. The auto-section control function operates with both liquid and dry products and the automatic shut-off also works with crop sensing technology. In common with other systems it will also provide variable rate control for drills, fertiliser spreaders and sprayers. Maps can be imported and exported to the terminal in a range of common file-types and can be set up to include customer, farm/field names, boundaries and guidance lines as well as information on the job and applications. The screen displays a wide range of information, which can be superimposed on the background coverage map. The video camera input will handle up to four different views.

Muller Comfort-TerminalControl with comfort The Müller Elektronik Comfort-Terminal, sold in the UK by David King Electronics, offers a 10.4in VGA screen and is also found on a wide range of self-propelled sprayers and other equipment. The terminal, which complies with the ISObus standard, can provide a wide range of functions including automatic boom section control, autosteering and VarioSelect, which operates multiple nozzles. It is operated using 17 soft-touch buttons, which operate five main and 12 additional functions, and are arranged around the screen. A ‘selection’ knob is used to scroll through menu ‘pages’ and for entering and changing data, pressing in the button to confirm. The screen can be divided into two parts – with the upper section showing information about the machine and the lower part displaying precision farming data. If spraying, for example, the top part will display the current spraying status, nozzles on/off, etc, while the GPS position and other data at the bottom. The screen also shows guidance lines and coverage maps. It can be used with a wide range of dGPS correction signals including RTK and has two GSM modules as well as two connections for displaying images from on-board video cameras. Software options allow the terminal to run assisted-steering as well as full integral auto-steer, variable rate applications as well as headland management systems.

Claas CEBIS MobileCross-platform abilityCEBIS Mobile is a portable multifunctional control terminal from Claas based on the established CEBIS system used across the firm’s larger tractors and combines. Designed primarily as a stand-alone ISOBUS controller for in precision farming systems, it can be used to control both tractor and sprayer/implement functions and displays information on a 16cm/6.4 inch colour screen with standard ISOBUS backlit keyboard, 15 keys and one rotary switch for navigation The unit incorporates two SD card readers, and comes complete with the Claas Agromap software, allowing users to create variable application maps without the need to rely on external suppliers. For variable application management, CEBIS Mobile can be used in combination with most variable rate-capable sprayers, as well as fertiliser spreaders and drills. It uses the ISO-XML format, which means that although mainly designed for use with CLAAS Agro-Net and Agro-Map software, it offers some compatibility with other popular software mapping packages, providing an element of cross-platform ability. Having loaded the application maps, in addition to managing the implement via either a serial or ISOBUS interface, CEBIS Mobile also has the capability to record and store an application map, showing what has been applied and where. This can then be transferred to the farm computer and stored as proof of application for crop compliance or other schemes. The system can also be used for auto steering control.

The ISObus standard, which allows on terminal to control a wide range of implements from various manufacturers, is possibly the most important advance in precision farming technology. Add ISObus to the myriad of tasks multi-function controllers are already capable of running and you get a very powerful console.

Topcon X30 terminalX30 heart of System 350The Topcon X30 terminal, sold in the UK by LH Agro, as well by AGCO dealers, can operate as a stand-alone console and is fully ISObus compliant. It is also the interface for the System 350 Autosteering with the AGI-3 multi-constellation GPS receiver and controller. Alternatively it has an integral lightbar for guidance, but will also run assisted-steering using, for example, the Topcon AES-25 electric system, which fits over the steering wheel. For guidance and steering it offers a range of steering modes – straight lines and curves – and shows lines and coverage maps on the display. The colour, 12.1in touch-screen can show up to three ‘mini-view’ window, which operators can ‘drag and drop’ into their preferred position on the display. It also has a user-defined dashboard read-out that allows operators to select common basic data that is displayed constantly. The X30 can provide variable rate control on sprayers, fertiliser spreaders and drills for up to eight different products/channels, as well as auto-section control of up to 32 individual nozzles. Auto-field recognition helps load jobs and identifies tasks, while coverage maps display current progress as well as calculating covered and remaining areas. Jobs can be imported and exported using a wide range of file types and client, farm and job menus are used to save and assign multiple fields and tasks for different farms.

Trimble FmXSpecced up or simpleAt the launch of Trimble›s AgGPS FmX integrated display unit, the manufacturer claimed that the new system was one of the first of its type to offer the possibilities of working either as a stand-alone manual guidance system or as part of an automated guidance, implement control or steering package. Incorporating dual GPS and GLONASS receivers with integral 450MHz receivers (900MHz units are an option) for greateraccuracy, the 12.1in touchscreen terminal can be integrated with Trimble’s Autopilot automated steering system, and used for sprayer control, variable rate application, field mapping and to view video of the machine at work from up to four different cameras. Trimble can supply its own AgCam video camera units. Users can toggle between plan and 3D views or zoom in/out on maps by touching a finger to the screen, while a virtual lightbar is included to give the operator fast feedback on position accuracy. Screen brightness can be adjusted for night work. Accuracy options range from EGNOS (15-30cm) to RTK/GLONASS (2.5cm), with further additions including the aforementioned Trimble Autopilot automated steering or the EZ-Steer assisted steering system, which can is portable and transferable, and can be fitted to more than 1,000 machines – both older vehicles and those currently on the market.

John Deere Greenstar 2630Deere developmentJohn Deere’s GreenStar 3 2630 touchscreen display is an evolution of the firm’s 2600 unit. It adds full tractor guidance and Application Pro implement management systems, plus documentation recording, to the established standard features of the monitor it succeeds. The new model has a smaller profile, although screen size is unchanged, and is said to be more robust. The 2630 also has a faster processor with more memory, and features USB and ethernet ports plus video capability. Screen brightness has been improved, and there’s a standby mode to save rebooting when moving on the road between fields. Different user access levels allow farmers and managers to prevent less experienced operators from, for example, changing settings without permission. A Field Locator records the machine’s departure from the field, and helps the operator select the name of the field and others nearby using GPS. Touching the map screen allows operators to search for a new field. The GreenStar 3 2630 terminal is ISOBUS-compatible, allowing ISOBUS-equipped implements to be touchscreen-controlled through the display. Cab clutter is limited by the ability to specify the terminal pre-loaded with AutoTrac and Sprayer Pro automatic steering and control applications, eliminating the need for additional displays. The standard screen is AutoTrac (auto steer) ready, while also included in the optional touch screen version is video monitoring capability.

Kverneland IsoMatch TellusTwo screens in oneKverneland’s latest control terminal incorporates a dual-screen display that enables two ISOBus-compatible implements to be monitored/controlled without toggling between screen views. The 32cm touchcreen display on the IsoMatch Tellus can be used to control a wide range of Vicon and Kverneland sprayers, fertiliser spreaders, drills, forage wagons and balers, as well as ISOBUS compatible machines from other makers. The terminal can be set up such that, for example, one screen view shows tractor operating data while the other is used to control the sprayer. Alternatively, one screen can be used with a rear-view camera, or the operator can use both screens to manage two different control functions on one implement. For example, an ISO-compatible sprayer can be displayed on the top part of the screen while auto-boom height control could be shown on the lower half. Customers without an ISOBUS-ready tractor can specify the Tellus terminal with a dedicated wiring loom. In addition to being used for data input and export – for application maps, for example – multiple terminals can be connected where necessary, and external ISO controllers such as joysticks or third-party GPS steering systems can be plugged in. An RS232 input allows GPS receivers to be connected A Bluetooth-enabled, built-in internet browser allows web and e-mail access from the field, while electronic handbooks and manuals can be uploaded onto the terminal’s 16GB flash memory.

Assessing a crop’s canopy Green Area Index (GAI) precisely can be

tricky, but it is an important indicator for accurate fertiliser and agrochemical application timings. In collaboration with ADAS, BASF developed a Canopy Assessment Tool (CAT) for winter cereals, allowing an accurate and consistent assessment of crop nitrogen content (in kgN/ha) and crop lodging risk from a digital photograph. “The BASF Canopy Assessment Tool is a revolutionary tool to help farmers and advisors protect their yield by accurately assessing nitrogen requirements and crop lodging risk. It is an easy to use practical aid, calculating crop nitrogen requirements accurately and allowing appropriate fertiliser and PGR programmes to be devised. It helps to justify inputs and is very much a part of an on-going ICM approach. Having the CAT on the mobile interface makes the tool faster and more flexible,” says BASF’s Sarah Mountford-Smith. In its first year there were more than 4000 uses of the CAT online by growers and advisors,

and more than 400 downloaded the CAT App. “Hopefully more growers and advisors will have a go with the CAT this spring. The new improved CAT App is being demonstrated at the Precision Farming event on the BASF stand at Stand Number 28, where you can download it free of charge on the day of the event,” says Sarah. She reports that since its launch last year the Canopy Assessment Tool (CAT) has been considerably enhanced in a number of ways, making it even more valuable to growers and agronomists. “The CAT is available as an iPhone App or as a web-based online tool at www.agricentre.basf.co.uk. A Blackberry version will be available very soon.” Sarah explains that the CAT was originally developed for use in winter wheat and this has been expanded to include winter barley. “We have also improved its user-friendliness through more appropriate default settings. The key area of enhancement is its use not only for assessing lodging risk and hence PGR timings, but also for accurately assessing crop nitrogen content. This means that it has two key timings and

two key functions – the first is when the CAT is calibrated to be used from Growth Stage 12 onwards to calculate crop nitrogen content and the second is when it is used from GS 30 onwards to calculate lodging risk and PGR needs.” Sarah explains that the CAT is very simple to use. “Either on iPhone App or using a digital camera, photographs should be taken directly above the crop at the appropriate timings. A 1 metre x 1 metre area is perfectly adequate, but choose an area representative of the

whole field. If you are using the online version, upload your photos to www.agricentre.basf.co.uk web site. If using the App, field photos are processed immediately or can be saved and processed at a more convenient time.” “The iPhone App automatically generates an assessment of GAI, Crop N and subsequent report there and then in the field. The App has a save function for crop photos and associated crop reports and automatically records the location by GPS. Another feature is the ability to export the risk assessment by email to customers or colleagues at the touch of a button.” The CAT has been developed in conjunction with ADAS and ADAS researcher Dr. Sarah Clarke is of the view that it will provide an important role in managing and justifying inputs this spring. “This season, earlier sowing, higher seed rates and more residual Nitrogen than normal have all contributed to give the large wheat crops that can currently be seen throughout the country. Growers are being advised that these crops should be managed carefully in order to optimise Nitrogen inputs and reduce the potentially high lodging risk,” she says. Nitrogen (N) is a key input to any crop, and is often the most costly, so getting the amount right is important to optimise both yields and gross margins. The Soil Nitrogen Status (SNS) of a crop, which includes an estimate of the amount of N already in the crop, is needed to produce a Nitrogen recommendation. The amount of N already in the crop can be determined by measuring it’s Green Area Index (GAI), as 1 unit of GAI contains 30 kg N/ha. “In a season like this where we’ve experienced a mild

autumn, crops may well have taken up more N than usual, so it is particularly important to measure GAI to check crop N status,” says Sarah. The fertiliser manufacturers, GrowHow now have a connection with the BASF CAT tool to enable growers to calculate the amount of N in the crop by assessing crop canopy size, reports GrowHow company agronomist, Allison Grundy. She explains that barley and wheat can be assessed from growth stage 12 to 32. “It’s very simple to do. The grower uploads a digital image to the BASF Website or App where the GAI and crop N is calculated from calibrated images.   Ready for spring 2013, BASF are developing the tool so it estimates the number of tillers from crop images as well as crop N content. Making an estimate of crop N is an important component of assessing SNS but counting tillers and calculating GAI’s can be a laborious job, this is where the CAT comes into its own as it provides a timely and accurate alternative,” adds Allison. Dr. Sarah Clarke explains how the CAT can also be used for assessing lodging risk and the necessary PGR programme. “Lodging risk can also be estimated from crop GAI, with larger crops being more lodging prone due to more tillers and weaker stems. Lodging can reduce yield by up to 75%, and Hagberg Falling Number by 20 seconds a day, as well as increasing combining time and drying costs. There is also a variety effect, with around 70% of current Recommended List varieties at risk from lodging (lodging resistance score <7).” “To assess lodging risk, the GAI of a crop should be measured at growth stages 30 and 31. GAI should be 1-1.25

at the first timing and 1.5-1.75 at the second. Each 0.5 unit increase above this reduces a variety’s lodging resistance score by 1, a significant effect,” says Sarah Clarke. You can estimate GAI by eye from the area of the ground covered by the crop, but it is not easy and can lead to large errors - the GAI would be 1 if the area of the crop was estimated as 50%, but would double to a GAI of 2 if the estimate was 65%. This difference would lead to different conclusions on how best to manage the crop, she warns. A more accurate way of estimating GAI is to upload a digital photograph onto the Canopy Assessment Tool. This gives a measurement of GAI, an estimate of the lodging risk, and an appropriate BASF PGR programme for the crop. So the advice to growers is clear. ‘In terms of optimising both Nitrogen and PGR inputs, knowing the GAI of your crop is very important’ says Sarah Clarke. ‘With the lush crops we are seeing this season, assessing GAI will be especially worthwhile, and using the CAT is a quick, easy and more precise way of doing this.’

Claas UK ‘s new TELEMATICS on IMPLEMENT (TONI) system, is set to revolutionise field and output data collecting and management. The system is available on CLAAS tractors, combine harvesters and forage harvesters. This data can then be analysed to make informed management decisions. Until now it has only been able to provide working information on the individual tractor, but this has moved on with the development of TELEMATICS on IMPLEMENT (TONI) which can also gather implement data. Although in pre-series trials, TONI will be available later this year. It has already been awarded a Silver Medal at last year’s Agritechnica show.Farming businesses now have to record and store an increasing amount of agronomic and field data for regulatory purposes, TONI

will be invaluable in gathering all necessary field data. And simplifying invoicing and provide greater real time information. TONI enables work process analysis, comparison and data storage. One of the most useful features is the ease with which information such as spray, fertiliser or slurry application data can be gathered, stored and retrieved in order to meet regulatory requirements. Historically this has required accurate manual daily records which is both time consuming and open to error. TONI, eliminates all manual record keeping. As the tractor enters the field, if the field is already recorded on the TELEMATICs system, for instance from yield mapping, then the system automatically recognises the field from its location and will start to upload the latest application data

to that field file. If there is no previous field record, the field boundary and application data will still be gathered, which can be subsequently allocated a field reference. Using an Open System to communicate and gather data from the implement via ISOBUS. This data is then uploaded every 15 minutes via the GPRS mobile phone network to the server along with the tractor output data. This can then be accessed from the office PC or hand held web enabled device.

URSULA is a 2 year research and development programme that is exploring the potential for advanced remote sensing, using small unmanned aircraft for use in land applications, primarily high input arable farming. URSULA is developing market-focused data products based on imagery captured by a range of sensors. Combining the innovative remote sensing platform and its launch anywhere, anytime capability with novel processing techniques, will open up new avenues for flexible, cost-effective, high resolution data provision. It is anticipated that this will accelerate the adoption of precision farming principles at a critical time for the industry. Officially launched in March 2011 Project URSULA has completed

its first flying season with spec-tacular results that have already fed through into plans for year two. Flying took place over a number of arable farms with specific crop types, including wheat, potatoes, peas and legumes, at different

times in the growing season. The imagery and quantitive data can be processed in a number of different ways and at the scale and resolution required by the farm. The project and capability has

emerged from a unique collaboration between two leading edge SMEs working in complementary areas of technology; Environment Systems, environmental experts in earth observation and geographic intelligence and Callen-Lenz Associates Ltd, aviation and remote sensing specialists. Year two will see an extensive flying program with further sensor assessment and evolution of the UAS platform and further advanced data processing. Working directly with producers, we will develop the first market-focused data products, likely to be available during 2013.

GEOseed also allows down-the-row seed spacings to be managed on an individual basis, eliminating overlaps and losses at headlands, as defined by GPS location. The greater efficiency from using GEOspread allows the Vicon RO - EDW and Kverneland TL Exacta spreaders to deliver a saving from 2-10% from reducing overlaps. And with precision drills, GEOseed offers a 5-10% saving on seed.
