Welcome to Salem, Oregon!

Whether you have traveled from afar or are from just around the corner, we are grateful that you have taken the time to come share your knowledge and enthusiasm.

Building on the momentum of last year’s successful event, the goal of the 2015 Oregon Precision Farming Expo is to deliver some clarity around the rapidly evolving agri-tech movement. We hope that you enjoy all of the expert presentations, Exhibit Hall, interactive forums and festive St. Paddy’s Day Mixer!

We’re pleased to partner with the Salem Convention Center for this gathering of agri-tech innovators. With its strategic location that boasts several nearby colleges and universities, world-renowned wineries and agriculture-focused companies, Salem is not only the state capital but also an important crossroads of agricultural commerce.

Clive Blacker, Precision Decisions

Clive is the CEO of Precision Decisions Ltd, a leading company providing comprehensive precision farming services. Through his consulting services to the world’s largest agri-engineering companies, Clive has gained extensive knowledge of the global market including Africa.

He has been involved with precision agriculture for over 16 years and was one of the pioneers of precision farming technology in the country.

Young Kim, Digital Harvest CEO

Young Kim has over 20 years experience as an entrepreneur and technologist. As an entrepreneur and technologist, his passion for business strategy and the establishment strategic relationships has assured the development of strategic proprietary products and

services for Digital Harvest. He remains active in the unmanned systems industry, is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), currently heads the newly formed AUVSI Precision Agriculture working group, and served on several aerospace and UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) committees and councils.

Wendie Kellington, Law Offices of Wendie L. Kellington, PC

Wendie Kellington is a Martindale Hubble AV rated attorney, practicing law since 1983. She is known in Oregon and nationally for her expertise in administrative law, on topics ranging from land use to the emerging law of unmanned vehicles. She is a member of the Association for Unmanned

Vehicle Systems Inc. (AUVSI), its newly formed Export Controls Committee, and the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA). Ms. Kellington serves on the RTCA SC 228, developing Minimum Operational Performance Standards (MOPS) for UAS airspace integration to recommend to the FAA.

Jan Bontsema, Wageningen University Research Center

Jan received a MSc. degree in Mathematics in 1982 and a PhD. degree in Mathematics and Physics in 1989, both from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. He has held positions at the Universities of Delft, Groningen, and Wageningen, The Netherlands. Since 1997 he has worked as a Senior Scientist with the Business Unit Wageningen UR

Greenhouse Horticulture. His research interests include control engineering, advanced mechanization in agriculture and greenhouse climate control.

Heather Stafford, Sustainable Valley Technology Group

Heather Stafford is Executive Director of Sustainable Valley Technology Group, a business accelerator in Southern Oregon. She is a passionate advocate for diversifying investment strategies and an avid coach for entrepreneurs. Sustainable Valley supports early stage start-up companies toward the successful commercialization of their

innovations in artisan food products, clean tech, ag tech, nano tech, bio tech, mems and other advanced manufacturing industries.

Mr. Ken Giles, UC Davis

Ken Giles works in spray applications and pest control in agriculture, including design and deployment of spraying technology, control systems and vehicles. His research, teaching and outreach programs include engineering design and development. Ken is a Fellow of the American Society of Agricultural & Biological Engineers. His current

projects include design of spray systems for UAV’s and deployment of UAV spray systems for vineyard pest control.

Gretchen West, Drone Deploy

Gretchen West serves as San Francisco start-up DroneDeploy’s Vice President of Business Development and Regulatory Affairs. In her current position, Ms. West oversees the company’s global growth and business development strategy, and positioning in the regulatory environment. Previously, Ms. West served as AUVSI’s

Executive Vice President, overseeing that company’s government relations and advocacy efforts for the unmanned systems industry.

Silvia Rondon, Oregon State University

Silvia is interested in developing an Ecological Based-Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for various crops. Her area of expertise encompasses biological control, insect biology, ecology, and population dynamics; both basic and applied (field and greenhouse production). Silvia has worked with crops including: potato, sweet

potato, asparagus, cotton, corn, soybean, alfalfa, wheat, strawberry, and vegetables. Her major responsibilities as an Extension Entomologist at OSU are to attend emergencies in irrigated crops such as potatoes, grasses, onions, carrots and others in Eastern Oregon.

Matt Weed, Open Photonics, Inc.

Matt Weed earned his Doctorate in Optics from the University of Central Florida and has worked in spectroscopy, imaging, lasers, and drug delivery technology markets. He is the Director of Research & Development at Open Photonics, a product design and development firm dedicated to accelerating the commercialization of optical technologies.

Lisa Ellman, McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP

Lisa Ellman is a Counsel in the Washington, DC office of McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP and serves as co-chair of the firm’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Practice Group. She is also a member of the firm’s Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs practice. Ms. Ellman uses her experience in the Federal government to help bridge the sizable

knowledge gap between government policymaking and business innovation.

Sky Johnson, Borton Fruit

Sky Johnson is responsible for maintaining and growing sales with current and new customers, coordinating, implementing and executing programs identified by Borton & Sons, Inc. as well as formulating alternative wholesaler/retailer specific programs designed for regional specific requirements. He works with key management

on expansion activities through formulating sales growth plans. Included in his responsibilities is traveling to service both existing and new targeted customers.

Craig Pope, Polk County Commissioner

Craig Pope is a Polk County (Oregon) Commissioner since 2010 and has a business and agriculture background. As a County Commissioner, Craig is actively pursuing opportunities for vocational education improvements and workforce initiatives that produce results. His background is mechanical design and manufacturing and owned

Agriweld Inc., a Willamette Valley company for 23 years that produced niche market agricultural solutions that were sold locally and around the world. Commissioner Pope has been involved in automated solutions for industry and has a history that adds credibility to his positions on tech investments in agriculture.

Mr. Eric Wavra, Sitech Oregon

Eric Wavra has been in the precision agriculture industry for nearly 20 years, working with all major brands, technologies and precision concepts starting in Agronomy. Mr. Wavra has been instrumental in developing new concepts and technologies with a wide variety of farming practices and crops. At Sitech-Oregon, Mr. Wavra and his team provide the highest standards and quality for

precision agricultural needs.

Jeff Freeman, Wilco-Winfield

Jeff Freeman is a native of the Willamette Valley with twenty years of experience in the agricultural inputs service business. As the Marketing & Supply manager for Wilco-Winfield he is responsible for providing products and services that add value to members of the cooperative’s base of growers in Western Oregon and

Washington.

Lav Khot, Washington State University

Lav Khot is an agriculture engineer at Washington State University with research interest in applied sensor technologies for precision farming, UAS based crop sensing, spray technology, sensors for food quality and safety. He is an active member of American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) since 2005

and was named ‘Outstanding Reviewer’ for his 2010 peer-review efforts for ASABE journals. Dr. Khot is also an affiliate faculty member of the Center for Precision and Automated Agricultural Systems (CPAAS)-WSU.

Mr. Ryan Jenson, HoneyComb Corp.

Ryan Jenson is CEO and Co-founder of HoneyComb, which specializes in the development and application of drones and data processing for precision agriculture. Over the past decade, he has been involved in research and development with a wide range of institutions including NASA, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation,

Department of Defense, British Royal Navy, Fortune 500 companies, small businesses, and fast-paced startups.

Mr. Stephen Burtt, Aerial Technology International

Stephen Burtt has worked in the Unmanned Aerial Systems industry for the past 7 years. Stephen has served as the founder and lead videographer for Northwest Aero Pix since 2007. In 2012, he formed Aerial Technology International out of a desire to create a company that could support the needs of UAS operators in the rapidly

expanding industry. Mr. Burtt now serves as CEO of ATI, a company that provides turn-key unmanned aerial systems along with the training, support, maintenance and repairs needed by end users.

Mr. Steve Markofski, Yamaha Motor Corp. USA

Steve Markofski is New Business Planner for Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., with headquarters located in Cypress, California. His responsibilities are focused on searching for new business opportunities as well as those in areas related to Yamaha’s current businesses. A certified RMAX pilot, Mr. Markofski is a member of the RMAX remotely piloted helicopter team, whose focus is the introduction

and use of precision agriculture in the United States market. The Yamaha team has been working with U.C. Davis on ongoing research to evaluate use of the remote controlled RMAX helicopter for agricultural use.

Gabriel Torres, MicaSense

Dr. Torres is an expert in unmanned aircraft systems and associated payloads and sensors. Over the span of more than 13 years, he has led the development and transition to production of multiple Unmanned Systems including RQ-11B Raven and RQ-20A Puma AE. As CEO and Co-Founder of MicaSense, Dr. Torres applies his knowledge

of remote sensing to the development of powerful sensor systems and associated processing and analysis capabilities.

Qin Zhang, Washington State University

Qin Zhang is the Director of the Center for Precision and Automated Agricultural Systems, Washington State University, as well as a Professor of Agricultural Automation in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering. Dr. Zhang’s research interests are in the areas of agricultural automation, intelligent off-road equipment, and precision

agriculture. He has authored numerous technical and academic publications, has been awarded nine U.S. patents, and has served as a chair or co-chair for four international conferences or symposiums in the area of agricultural automation.

Dave Nerpel, Agrian

Dave has been involved with precision ag equipment, data management systems, tool development and field delivery for over 30 years. With a background in commodity and specialty crops throughout the US and abroad, current activities with the regulatory, data and technology ventures of Agrian, involves him daily with the challenges

of large scale precision ag service and data management providers and most of the brands of precision ag hardware.

Ben Berry, AirShip Technologies

Ben Berry serves as a strategic technology leader and has led technology for large-scale organizations with diverse missions. He is the Aviation Entrepreneurial CEO and Founder for AirShip Technologies Group’s AirShip Endurance VTOL UAVs and AirScape geo-spatial Agri-Business and Intelligence services. He has held various

senior leadership technology positions serving the Royal Saudi Air Force, Kingdom of Saudi Arabian International Airports, and Hughes Aircraft Company – Los Angeles.

Andrew McCollough, SkyWard

Dr. Andrew McCollough is a neuroscience researcher turned serial entrepreneur, and after leaving academia, he co-founded a software development consultancy to support early-stage startups. Andrew is now a SkyWard Professional Services analyst and engages in account development and regulator engagement across

jurisdictions through documenting regulatory requirements, writing proposals, and assisting SkyWard subscribers with regulatory compliance.

Matt Droter, Autonomous Solutions, Inc.

Matt Droter has more than ten years of automation, research, and sensor development experience. As Product Owner for ASI’s orchard/vineyard projects, he has overseen robotic field trials in California and Texas. Prior to ASI, Matt worked as a principle investigator for an experiment that flew on the Space Shuttle Endeavor STS-77. Matt is

a passionate technologist, is a former standup comedian, and, like you, is experiencing the world of farming technology moving forward at light speed.

Tim Marquis, Weather Decisions Technology

Mr. Marquis is head of Agriculture Business Development at Weather Decision Technologies (WDT). Previously, he was a teaching assistant in 2011/2012 for senior level Synoptic meteorology and Mesoscale meteorology. Tim received coursework with ties to precision agriculture while at Iowa State. His thesis was on investigating the development of

Mesoscale Convective Systems in numerical weather prediction models, a key meteorological phenomenon that supports agriculture across the farm belt of the United States.

John Burt, Farmers Ending Hunger

John is the Executive Director of Farmers Ending Hunger, an Oregon non-profit that seeks donations of high quality food commodities from Oregon farmers and ranchers that are then delivered to the Oregon Food Bank Network. He retired from Oregon State University Extension Service in 2005 after a 33 year career working with farmers in the

Willamette Valley. He began with Farmers Ending Hunger in January 2007 and has seen the donations increase from 173,000 lbs. in 2006 to over 2.5 million lbs. in 2014.
