    Reading One : ( s . r. 89 )

Global Warming is a term used to descri be an increase in the average sur face temperature of the

Ear th over a period of time . I t can refer to past periods of warming ,such as occurred about 15,000

years ago , towards the end of the last ice Age , but i t is usually used to mean the change in the climate

that it i s thought l ikely will occur as a resul t of thegreenhouse effect, as explained below .

The present average sur face temperature of the Earth i s about 15 C ( 59 F ) and this vari es by few

tenths of a degree each year . Over longer periods of time , the Earths surface has been both cooler

    (perhaps about 11 C or 12 C (between 52 F and 54 F ) dur ing the Ice Age , or glacial ) and warmer

    ( perhaps about 16 C (61 F ) dur ing some per iods between the I ce Ages-the interglacials ) .Over

the past 100 years or so , the average surface temperature has increased by about 0.5 C (1 F)

The most probable explanation for the present global warming is that i t is the resul t of increasing

concentr ations in the atmosphere ofgreenhouse gasessuch as carbon dioxide , methane , and

chlorofluorocarbonswhich all ow energy from the Sun to reach the Earth , but prevent some of i t

from escaping back into space . These gases have been steadily building up for over 100 years , largely

as a result of mankinds use of fossil fuels , such as coal and petroleum , to provide energy . Since we

wil l almost certainl y continue to rely on fossil fuels as our main source of energy for many years to

come , and since the Earths population is expected to have doubled by the year 2100 , the

concentr ations of greenhouse gases wil l continue to rise thr oughout the next centur y . It is estimated

that global warming wil l i ncrease the average sur face temperature of the Ear th by between 1C and

    2 C( 2 F and 4 F ) by the year 2100.

    1. Which is the best definition for global warming ?

    1) An increase in the average surface temperature of the earth over a period of time.

    2) The change in the climate that happens as the Earth grows older .

    3) A collection of different climates around the world .4) The past periods of warming about15,000years ago, towards the end of the last Ice Age .

Speed is important in tr ansporting f ish and many other f resh foods . Food that spoil easi ly must

reach the market and the dinner table as quickly as possible . But now planes , trucks, trains ,

and ships have made thi s transportati on easier . Planes are the fastest way to tr ansport food .

They are especial ly useful in carrying food to people and animals that could not be reached by

trains or trucks . Unless packages of food could be dropped by planes , the people might starve .But there is a disadvantage in using planes : air transportation is usuall y the most expensive way

of carrying f ood . And so with in a country most perishable foods are transported by trucks and

    trains .

BPA is a chemical that put into plastic that are used as food containers . Unfortunately , some of the

BPA passes from the containers into the foods that they are meant to protect . When people and

animals eat those foods , BPA goes into their bodies . There are studies that have found that BPA canincrease our chances of getting a number of serious disease . Many food companies are concerned

about that risk and are starti ng to use containers that contain no BPA.

Thats good right ? Not necessarily . Some scientists say that the other chemicals being used might

tur n out to be dangerous as well . They could possibly be even worse !

    Reading Five : ( e . s . 92 )

To obtain power from the suns rays is to use nuclear power developed at no expense in a

laboratory 93 million miles away . For the bright energy of the sun is maintained by nuclear

transformation of chemical elements occurring in the suns interior at temperatures of many

million degrees , and at pressures of many million atmospheres . The resources of solar power are

enormous . If 100 percent efficiently could be secured in the transformation of radiant solar energy

into mechanical work , a horsepower per square yard of ground surface would be available under

cloudless skies . The expense of collecting solar energy still prevents its competition with the usual

power sources . Yet , unless the vague promise of safe thermonuclear power from oceans becomes

realized , solar power must supply the enormous and growing requirements of children within two

centuries . Because the ground sources ( coal , oil and uranium ) may be used up soon , they will

become more costly than solar power .

1.According to the reading , what do we need to convert sunrays to energy ?

1.Thermonuclear power sources . 2.A constant resource of chemicals .

3.A laboratory millions mile away . 4.A cloudless sky at temperatures of enormous degrees .

2.Which of the following is the best topic for the reading ?

1.solar energy : an impossible energy source 2.Solar energy : facts and realities

3.Expenses of using solar energy 4.Different sources of energy

3.According to the reading , an alternative to solar energy can be .. .

1.ocean thermonuclear power 2.energy from fossils

    3.radiant energy 4.nuclear power

4.The writer points out that solar energy is not used on a large scale.

1.though it is clean and safe

2.because the expense of controlling it is enormous

3.because it can create some dangers to the environment

4.since it is costly and less costeffective than other sources of energy
