    First Joyful Mystery The Annunciation

The Third Sorrowful MysteryThe Crowning withThorns

And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak about him.

And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his

head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee

before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, king of the

Jews. And spitting upon him, they took the reed, and

    struck his head. Matthew 27:28-30

PrayerFor me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward

heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial andjoy.

Kneeling before the tabernacle, I can think of only one thing to say toour Lord: My God, you know that I love You. And I feel that myprayer does not weary Jesus; knowing my weakness, He is satisfied with

my good will. St Therese of Liseux

"Prayer is the raising of one's mind and heart to God or the requesting ofgood things from God." St. John Damascene

The wonder of prayer is revealed beside the well where we come seeking

water: there, Christ comes to meet every human being. It is He who firstseeks us and asks us for a drink. Jesus thirsts; His asking arises from thedepths of God's desire for us. Whether we realize it or not, prayer is theencounter of God's thirst with ours. God thirsts that we may thirst forhim. St. Augustine

SacramentalsThese are sacred signs which bear a resemblance tothe sacraments. They signify effects, particularly ofa spiritual nature, which are obtained through theintercession of the Church. By them men aredisposed to receive the chief effect of thesacraments, and various occasions in life are

    rendered holy." CCC 1667

They always include a prayer, often accompanied bya specific sign, such as the laying on of hands, thesign of the cross, or the sprinkling of holy water(which recalls Baptism). CCC 1668

Certain blessings have a lasting importance becausethey consecrate persons to God, or reserve objectsand places for liturgical use.

    Popular Devotions

The religious sense of the Christian people has always foundexpression in various forms of piety surrounding the Church'ssacramental life, such as the veneration of relics, visits to sanctuaries, pilgrimages, processions, the stations of the cross, the rosary, medals

These expressions of piety extend the liturgical life of the Church, but do not replace it. CCC 1674-1675

The greatest concern of theCouncil is two-fold: that the sacreddeposit of Christian doctrine shouldbe both guarded and taught more

efficaciously. The substance ofthe ancient doctrine of the deposit ofthe faith is one thing, and the way inwhich it is presented is another.

    Dual Interpretations

Hermeneutic of Discontinuity or Rupture Sees the Church in terms of pre-conciliar and post-conciliar, as if

the Council gave rise to a new Church Relies not so much on the conciliar documents, but on a so-called

    spirit of the Council

Saw any change in Catholic practice as a license to changeeverything

Hermeneutic of Continuity or Reform Wants to reform the Church within tradition in an organic way

Looks to the actual text of the conciliar documents to understandthe Councils intent

Advocated updating only those things called for by the Counciland retaining those things which the Council said to retain

    Example: Active Participation

Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should beled to that full, conscious and active participation in liturgicalcelebrationsto which the Christian peoplehave a right andobligation by reason of their baptism.

    True Participatio Actuosa

Unfortunately, the word was very quicklymisunderstood to mean something external, entailing a need for general activity, as if asmany people as possible, as often as possible, should be visibly engaged in action. However, the word participation refers to a principal actionin which everyone has a part. And so if wewant to discover the kind of doing that activeparticipation involves, we need, first of all, todetermine what this central actio is in which allthe members of the community are supposed toparticipate. Offering Our Lives

The Second Vatican Council rightlyemphasized the active, full and fruitfulparticipation of the entire People ofGod in the Eucharistic celebrationyet we must not overlook the fact thatsome misunderstanding hasoccasionally arisen concerning theprecise meaning of this participation. It should be make clear that the wordparticipation does not refer to mere

external activity during the celebration. The Churchs great liturgicaltradition teaches us that fruitful participation in the liturgy requires that onebe personally conformed to the mystery being celebrated, offering ones lifeto God in unity with the sacrifice of Christ for the salvation of the wholeworld.

    Reclaiming Our Faith

In the last forty years, we have sometimes lostsight of who we are and what we believe, andtherefore we have little to offer the world that sodesperately needs the Gospel Sometimes we setout to convert the world, but were instead convertedby it We must have a distinctive identity andculture as Catholics, if we would effectivelycommunicate the Gospel to the people of this day.

    Renewed Catechesis

We must strengthen catechesis on everylevel, beginning with and focusing onadults. If we, who are supposed to bemature in faith, do not know the CatholicFaith well, how can we live it and impartit to our children?

The more the Churchgives catechesispriority over other works andundertakings, the results of which wouldbe more spectacular, the more she finds

in catechesis a strengthening of herinternal life as a community of believersand of her external activity as amissionary Church.

    Foster Faithful Families

The first two prioritieswill fosterfaithful families that are the foundationof the Church and the society. We arecalled to protect, build up and foster holyfamilies in our midst, without whom theChurch and the world perish.

    Encourage Vocations

If we renew the Eucharistic, catechetical, and family life, we willsimultaneously foster a culture whereyoung people can more readily respondto the radical calls of ministerialpriesthood and the consecrated life.
