ISO 3166-2 IN-HP Portal: Himachal Pradesh Website Official website of Himachal Pradesh Himachal Pradesh (Hindi: ?????? ?????? [??ma?t??lpr?d?e??] ( listen)) is a state in Northern India. It is spread over 21,495 sq mi (55,673 km),[4] and is bordered by the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Punjab on the west and south-

west, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on the south, Uttarakhand on the south-east and by the Tibet Autonomous Region on the east. The literal meaning of Himachal Pradesh is Region of snowy mountains.[5]

Himachal Pradesh was anciently known as DevBhumi (The Abode of Gods) and is abundance in natural beauty [6] After the Anglo Gorkha War, the British colonial government came into power. It was initially part of Punjab, except the Siba State of Punjab Hills which was under the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh until 1857.[7] In 1950 Himachal was declared as a union territory but after the State of Himachal Pradesh Act 1971, Himachal emerged as the 18th state of the Indian Union. Himachal has many prestigious boarding schools. Hima means snow in Sanskrit. It was named by one of the great Sanskrit scholars of Himachal Pradesh, AcharyaDiwakarDatt Sharma Maharashtra.html Maharashtra (Marathi: ??????????mahara??ra, pronounced [m?hara???r?]( listen)) is a state located in India. The word Maharashtra comes from Sanskrit words Maha meaning Great and Rashtra meaning Nation, thus rendering the name Maharashtra (Great Nation). It is the second most populous after Uttar Pradesh and third largest state by area in India. It is the richest state in India, contributing to 15% of the country's industrial output and 13.2% of its GDP in 2005-06.[4][5][6][7]

Maharashtra is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Gujarat and the Union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli to the northwest, Madhya Pradesh to the northeast, Chhattisgarh to the east, Karnataka to the south, Andhra Pradesh to the southeast, and Goa to the southwest. The state covers an area of 307,731 km2 (118,816 sq mi) or 9.84% of the total geographical area of India. Mumbai, the capital city of the state, is India's largest city and the financial capital of the nation. Marathi is the language of Maharashtra.

In the 17th century, the Marathas rose under the leadership of ChhatrapatiShivaji against the Mughals who were ruling a large part of India. By 1760, Maratha power had reached its zenith with a territory of over 250 million acres (1 million km) or one-third of the Indian sub-continent. After the third Anglo-Maratha war, the empire ended and most of Maharashtra became part of Bombay state under a British Raj. After Indian independence, Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti demanded unification of all Marathi speaking regions under one state. At that time Bharat Ratna Dr. BabasahebAmbedkar was of opinion that linguistic reorganizaion of states should be done with - "One state - One language" principle and not with "One language - One state" principle. He submitted a memorandum to the reorganization commission stating that, " Single Government can not administer such a huge state as United Maharashtra".[8] The first state reorganization committee created the current Maharashtra state on 1 May 1960 (known as Maharashtra Day). The Marathispeaking areas of Bombay state, Deccan states and Vidarbha (which was part of Central Provinces and Berar) united, under the agreement known as Nagpur Pact, to form the current state.

Punjab.html The Punjab (pronounced /'p?nd???b/ ( listen) or /'p?nd?b/; Punjabi: ?????, ?????, Urdu: ?????, Hindi: ?????), also spelled Panjab (Persian: ?????, panj-ab, "five waters"),[1] is a geographical region straddling the border between Pakistan and India which includes Punjab province in Pakistan and the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Delhi in India.

[2] The name of the region is Persian in origin and signifies "(The Land of) Five Waters" referring to the following rivers: the Jhelum, the Chenab, the Ravi, the Sutlej, and the Beas.

All are tributaries of the Indus River, the Jhelum being the largest. Punjab has a long history and rich cultural heritage.

The people of the Punjab are called Punjabis and their language is called Punjabi.

The main religions of the Punjab region are Islam, Sikhism and Hinduism.

The area now known as the Greater Punjab comprises what were once vast territories of West Pakistan and northern western India. The bigger section of the Punjab at about 60% lies within Islamic Republic of Pakistan and 40% within Republic of India where it has been further divided into three states; Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

The region is populated by Indo-Aryan speakers. Of these people there are different religious groups such as Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jains and Buddhists. It has also been inhabited by Greeks, Persians, Arabs, Turks, Mughals, Afghans, Balochis, and British. In 1947, it was partitioned between British India's successor states with three out of the five rivers going to Pakistan and the remaining two rivers were allotted to India.
