Purpose: Strategic Project 1998Both US 287 and Interstate 70 have been identified as Colorado Strategic Projects by the Transportation Commission. US 287 is the Transportation Commissions priority corridor through eastern Colorado. US 287 is on the National Highway System and Colorado has already committed significant funds to its improvements.

Purpose: Alternative to Interstate 25The Transportation Commissions Resolution TC-796 states: CDOT is committed to diverting traffic from congested segments of I-25 through infrastructure improvement in eastern Colorado and views the Ports to Plains Program as an opportunity to pursue such goals.
