Do you need control? Do you have a machineor process to automate, safety features to implement, or a homeproject needing morehands than you have? If so, then Mitsubishi has a “Tiny Giant”α Series Controller for you. Mitsubishi’s α Series Controllers are the Tiny Giants ofautomation, designed to provide easy, flexible, and powerful control, that is rugged enough for the factory floor, and easy enough to use at home.

The Tiny Giants offer anunbeatable combinationof features, includingreal-time clock, high-current output relays, analog inputs, securedaccess, built-in display /programming panel, battery backup, andindustrial ruggednessand reliability.

Tiny Giants offer bothDIN rail and panelmounts for installation in panels, or anywhere asuper compact controlleris needed. However,Mitsubishi’s highly accessible and intuitiveVisual Logic Software(VLS) for Windows provides the key technology that enablesanyone, even those unfamiliar with controlsprogramming, to complete practicalautomation projects in minimum time and with little effort.

VLS uses function blockicons – pictures thatgraphically represent the elements of a controlsystem, such as pushbut-tons, switches, sensors,

lights and others. Userssimply drag and drop, connecting these elements on screen to easily form completesolutions for their projects. More advancedusers can create complex programs thatemploy features more tra-ditional to industrial con-trol. Users can simulate programs on the PC with VLS, soproper functioning is verified, and errors corrected, before a Tiny Giant is ever wired and operational. In addition to program-

ming on a Windows PC, users can make and edit programs, anddisplay messages, onthe controller’s frontpanel display. Super com-pact size and price, pow-erful features that fit theneeds of commonautomation projects, and highly productivedevelopment software, combine in one placewith α Series. Put theMitsubishi Tiny Giantsto work on your controlapplications today.

VLS Software

Visual Logic Software(VLS)

How does VLS make the Tiny Giants easy touse? The VLS softwareuses a simple method of programming calledFunction Block Diagram, that’s as easy as usingbuilding blocks. FunctionBlocks are small prepro-grammed building blocksof software that processinput data and then turnoutputs ON and OFFproviding the control you need. Premadeicons (Inputs, Outputs,Function Blocks, andLogic Blocks) can be placed on screen, connected with the click of a mouse button, and you have a complete program.

The Function BlockDiagram (FBD) Board has squares alreadylabeled in which to placeyour Inputs and Outputswhile the function blockscan be put anywhere on the board. Timer values, ON/OFF patterns, counters, calendar dates, and elapsed times can be combined for specificapplications by simplydouble clicking on theFunction Block and

entering the data in theoption settings. Everypart of your Tiny Giant’sprogram appears onscreen with interconnect-ing lines. The ability tosee the relationshipsbetween the variousparts of your systemmake both programmingand troubleshooting easy to grasp. Since the blocks have predeter-mined functions, anyonecan quickly recognize

what each segment of theprogram is doing.

You can add comments tothe function blocks usingthe VLS software or importselected text of your own. After the program is complete, the VLS software lets you simulatethe program in run modewithout any hardware.Create your program asoutlined above and thenturn on the Simulationmode in the “Controller”pull down menu. Click on inputs to turn them ON and OFF. The wires on the FBD Board lightwhen energized, timer values are displayed onscreen, and Outputs showtheir ON/OFF status. Allthe program debuggingcan be done from yourcomputer, before you even wire up your TinyGiant. VLS also allows you to monitor the Tiny Giant operating after installation. From program initiation to thefinal installation and after, the VLS packageprovides a powerful, intuitive, user friendly programming tool foreveryone.

Analog Inputs:Input your 0-10 volt analog data into as many as eight ofthe α Inputs.

Wide Range AC or DC PowerSupply:The α accepts 100-240 VAC or 24 VDC power supply foruse anywhere in the world.

High Current Relay Outputs:Switch currents up to 10 ampswith α’s heavy duty relays.

Transistor Outputs:Fast switching, long life outputs.

100 Hr Capacitor Backup for Memory and RTC:The α can retain its workingmemory for 20 days after apower outage. Your program is safe in EEPROM. There is no need to lose your programsor information just because thepower goes down.

Security Code Enabled:Only authorized personnel canupdate the a programs with theSecurity Code Enable Feature.

Sink or Source Inputs:The α Series can support your requirements for Sink or Source inputs.

LCD Display:Access your data with the pushof a button or automatically display messages on α’s frontpanel LCD Display. α lets youdisplay up to ten characters on each of four lines directly on the front panel, with program data.

Modem Communications andOpen Network Capabilities:The α Series supports modem dial in for remote communication applicationsand AS-i for sensor level network configurations.

Features

Real Time Clock FunctionsBegin operations based on acalendar date, or on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. The calendar schedule takesprecedence over weekly clockfunctions so that you can program special events withoutreprogramming other routinelyscheduled tasks. The four digit year display is Year 2000 Compliant.

Front Panel ProgrammingDo you need to control the Tiny Giant quickly and simplywith the push of a button? Youcan program, edit, access data,or input data using only thekeys on the front panel – notools or cables are required! This makes your Tiny Giantconvenient to use in applica-tions where a computer is notavailable, for maintenance oper-ations on the shop floor, or to change the temperature in your living room.

Large EEPROM MemoryThe Tiny Giant providesenough memory for the mostadvanced applications. Up to 64 function blocks or 1,500bytes of memory can be programmed. Additional EEPROM memory cassettescan be used to store and run alternate programs. Andbecause it’s EEPROM, you’ll never lose a program when the power fails.

Flicker:Design a series of “ON” and “OFF” output pat-terns. Have the Tiny Giantsound a horn forfour ten second blastswhile your warning lightflashes for sixty seconds.

Counter:Keep track of the numberof times an operation takesplace for information or to control your outputs.Reset the counter with apredetermined signal.

Compare:Compare data, currentelapsed time, analog values, or direct input values for > ,< , = , >=, <=, or not equal to andmanipulate outputs according to the results. The compare function can be turned “ON” and“OFF” with an input.

Zone Compare:Check the same data asthe compare function butthis time check your data to a range of values.

Offset Gain:Adjust the slope and offsetof analog values with the Offset Gain Function.Includes both a high andlow clamp if desired.

Schmitt Trigger:Establish a “window” ofinput values within which a signal is ignored. Usethis as a noise filter to prevent unnecessary operation. Turn the oven“ON” when the tempera-ture reaches 110° C and“OFF” when the tempera-ture reaches 125° C.

Display:Show analog or digitaldata, counter values, function block values, ormessages on your LCDdisplay. The display is enabled via an input signal.
