Energy Exchange: Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade4
A Metrics Calculator that generates key performance indicators. Energy consumption (source, site, weather normalized, EUI) Water consumption (municipally supplied potable and reclaimed, alternative) Greenhouse gas emissions (indirect, direct, total, avoided) ENERGY STAR 1-to-100 score (available for many building types)
A Management Tool that provides a platform for a strategic energy management Identify high performing facilities for recognition and replicable practices. Prioritize poor performing facilities for immediate improvement. Understand the contribution of energy expenditures to operating costs. Develop a historical perspective and context for future actions and decisions. Establish reference points for measuring and rewarding good performance.
Apply for ENERGY STAR certification

– Property Information• Building type• Name, street address, ZIP/postal code
– Property type data • Gross floor area• Use details (ex. weekly operating hours, number of
computers, number of workers on the main shift, etc)
– Energy consumption data• Property-specific invoice information from all
purchased and on-site generated energy for all fuel types

• Five ways to enter data for your property or portfolio:
1. Enter data manually (best for 1-10 buildings)
2. Upload data using spreadsheet templates (best for 10-100 buildings)
3. Send data from your agency’s utility bill management system to Portfolio Manager via web services
4. Work to authorize utilities who already exchange data with Portfolio Manager to push your agency’s data into the tool
5. Work with 3rd party providers that exchange data directly with Portfolio Manager via web services

Get Data In: Exchange Data via “Web Services”
• Using software to automatically push and pull data from Portfolio Manager is called “exchanging data via web services”
• Each action in Portfolio Manager (creating a property, adding a new meter, entering utility bills) has its own XML “web service” that enables energy service companies and utilities to exchange data with Portfolio Manager to– Manage building and energy data for customers– Access the ENERGY STAR score and other metrics
• Users working with a third party web services provider must “connect” and “share” with their provider’s Portfolio Manager account

Catching Errors in Submissions to FEMP
• Problem: incomplete annual benchmarking reports submitted to FEMP (“N/A” where metrics are expected).
• Goal: help users identify and fix their own errors/omissions BEFORE sending their data to FEMP.
• Solution: new “N/A Screen” alerts users when metrics can’t be calculated in a report preview, highlights data issues, and provides links to screen where issues can be fixed.

Upcoming Additions to Portfolio Manager
• Waste Tracking– Users will be able to track
waste starting Spring 2016– Will calculate waste disposed
and waste diverted from the landfill including volume/weight donated, recycled, and composted
• Changes to the Sustainability Checklist– Planning to update the
Sustainability Checklist available on the Goals tab to reflect revision due to Executive Order 13693
