The Philagram March | 2019 : @PPCMintHill : @PhilaPres : @ppc.minthill Philadelphia Presbyterian Church | Mint Hill, NC From Mark Lee, Interim Senior Pastor: I love this time of the year, the month of March, because baseball is back in season as spring training takes place and then the season opener is not too far behind. It looks like my Phillies are primed for a good season and it could get so much better when the team signs Bryce Harper (as of 2/23, not yet signed). NBA and NHL are in their stretch runs for the playoff and it helps to have your favorite team in the hunt and my Sixers and Flyers are in good position. Hornets are hanging in and hopefully there can be playoff basketball in Charlotte for Kemba’s last season with the team... haha!! Then there is that annual craziness called the “March Mad- ness” where corporate productivity in America suffers great losses because people are fixated on the tournament. According to busi- ness reports from CNBC, corporate losses in work productivity amounted to about $6.3 billion dollars during March of 2018. Yes, that’s a “B” and not millions. Last year, Billionaire investor Warren Buffett, a long-time basketball fan, singlehandedly of- fered Berkshire Hathaway employees $1 million a year for life to anyone who guessed which teams make it to the NCAA men's basketball tournament's "Sweet 16.” Pretty crazy stuff if you asked me. While sporting events in March are wonderful source of en- tertainment, something else occurs in March that is far more meaningful and impactful for our spiritual lives and life in gen- eral. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6. The Lenten season developed as part of the historical Christian calendar and is typi- cally celebrated by following a liturgical calendar. Although its format has varied throughout the centuries and throughout dif- ferent cultures, the basic concept remains the same... to open our hearts to God's refining grace through prayer, confession and fasting as we anticipate the Passion Week. Lent traditionally lasts forty days, modeled after Christ's forty day fast in the desert, and ends on Good Friday. In the Western Church, Lent officially begins with a reminder of our mortality on Ash Wednesday. While sports and other forms of entertainment may provide temporary relief from our daily lives, there is only one source of everlasting joy, peace and life and that is faith in Jesus Christ. As you enjoy cheer- ing for your favorite team in March Madness, I hope you will make it your most important priority to worship and fellowship with Jesus Christ, who brings peace and meaning in the midst of all the madness in this world. Rev. Mark Lee From Katie Sloan, Associate Minister: Everyone has a favorite holiday. For many, it’s Christmas with the presents and family gathering together to celebrate the birth of Jesus. For others, it’s Thanksgiving, the beauty of fall and the feast of the “unlike-any-other” foods. Then, there are those who love the 4th of July because of the summer fun, beach va- cations and patriotic pride. As for me, I love Easter, but the truth is, the season leading up to it (that begins on Ash Wednesday) isn’t one that folks embrace with the same passion as the others. I have never heard anyone say “Woo hoo! Only 3 more days until Ash Wednesday!” and kids never say “mom, is lent here yet?”. The word Lent comes from the Latin root meaning “to lengthen.” During the Lenten season we are reminded that spring is coming and with it, the sun will take a little longer to set beyond the horizon – something that I welcome. Lent is our connecting point to the seasons of life. For my family in the north, it means that the snowy season is finally coming to an end. For us here in Mint Hill, I think we are praying it means the rain will finally stop and some cool spring breezes will blow. As a kid, I grew up always “giving up something for lent”. I didn’t really know the purpose. It was just something we did. Then, there was that time when I attended an Ash Wednesday service. The ashes were smeared across to my head and words were spoken over me, “Re- member you are dust and to dust you shall return.” I was over- whelmed in that moment at the thought of being a mere human, created by the Master. In that moment, something began to grow in my soul. At the same time, it was, for me, a difficult time of coming to grips with my brokenness, staring at my sin and searching my heart. Lent is much less about celebrating the abundance of what we have been given and much more about reflection, penitence, sacrifice, and contemplation. Many people will give up some- thing for lent as a sacrifice and that is great, but the real work of lent comes in when you begin to reflect on what is God revealing to you in that now empty place. As we prepare to enter into the Lenten season, may we re- member we are dust and to dust we shall return. May we ex- amine our frail, flawed soul and, with Jesus, enter the darkness of our sin and death and journey with Him to the Cross. This is what Lent does. It allows us to see the parts of our- selves we’d rather leave covered up. It asks us to drag our full self into the light of day no matter how painful it might be. Easter reminds us that in the in the Kingdom of God, death doesn’t have the last word; life does. Ash Wednesday, Lent and Good Friday teach us the resurrection is something we desper- ately need — for our broken selves and our broken world. Is it Ash Wednesday yet, because I really need to take a little walk with Jesus! The Philagram March 2019 Page 1

News from Presbyterian Women.... Come join us for a service project at Bright Blessings! We have two times reserved in March for workshops at Bright Blessings. On Saturday, March 2, our time is from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., and on Thursday, March 7, our time is from 11:00 a. m. to 1:00 p.m. Your task may be wrapping gifts, packing bags, organizing…whatever needs to be done. The work will be ready for you when you arrive. You don’t have to be active in a circle. This is for all of the ladies at PPC! Mark your calendars for Sunday afternoon, March 24, for Missions Awareness, Series 1 We will have two speakers, one from Servant’s Heart and one from Alexander Youth Network. They will tell us about their or-

ganization, what they do, and how we can help. This will begin at 2:00 in the Kerr Building, and we should be done between 3:30 and 4:00. Each speaker will talk to us for about 25 minutes or so with a few mi-nutes for questions and answers. We will offer refreshments in between speakers.

This will be our first infor-mational event. We will plan a second for sometime in the fall when we will hear from two more of our missions. We are hoping for a good turnout not just from the ladies but men and youth as well. Please join us! It is almost time for Claire’s Army! May 18 is the date for our annual Claire’s Army fundraising event. Be watching for more information coming soon. If you

want to sponsor a table, it’s not too early to start planning! Tickets per seat are still $20, and entertain-ment will be provided by Grey Seal Puppets.
