TASK 3 BOnly one of these emails is a really good answer. Which one is it? ____________

After you finish the tasks, check your answers. Read the problems with each answer.

A

Hello, Pat!How are you? I hope everything is going well with you? Are you going shopping next weekend? I will come with you! We will have a very good time together! Please meet me in Moonbucks at 9.00 and we will talk about what we want to do. I will come and pick you up at your house if you like. Or maybe you can come by taxi. Taxis are very expensive.

B

Hi PatI want to buy a new mobile phone next Saturday, because my phone is seven years old and it’s so ugly and heavy! I want something more modern. Could you please come with me (because you know so much about phones!). How about meeting for coffee in Moonbucks at 9.00? Or is that too early?

C

Hello friendI explain to you why I am going shopping next Saturday. I invite you to join me. I suggest a time and place to meet.

D

Hi PatI am going shopping next weekend. Can you please join me? I will meet you in Moonbucks at 9.00.

1 Email B did all the task. The reason for going shopping is clear (to buy a new mobile phone). The invitation is clear in the language: Could you please come… The writer suggests How about… a time (9.00) and a place (Moonbucks).

2 Email D did some of the task. There is no reason for the shopping trip. There is an invitation (Can you please….). There is no suggestion (I will meet you…)

3 Email C did some of the task There is no reason for the shopping trip. ‘I invite you to join me” is an invitation but the writer almost copies it. “Can

you please me join me” or “How about joining me?” are more friendly invitations. They also show that the writer can make up an invitation, and not just copy it from the exam paper.

‘I suggest a time and place to meet’ also copies from the exam paper. But what is the time? What place? The writer gives no useful information.

4 Email A did none of the task The writer didn’t understand the task at all! Who is going shopping – the

writer or the friend? “Please meet me…” Is this an order? A suggestion? Cancel all the words that are not part of the task in Email A. There are many!
