WHAT’S A PERSUASIVE PARAGRAPH?

Write the parts of a good paragraph.

So , what’s a paragraph?

B. Read the sample persuasive paragraph below.

Circle and label different parts of it. Discuss with a partner.

Topic: Riding a bicycle in cities

I strongly believe that more people in cities should ride bicycles to get from one place to

another. First, bicycles are powered by rider’s muscles so they do not create air pollution. Second, if

more people started using bicycles we would rely less on gasoline and save a lot of money. Finally, riding

a bicycle is a great way to exercise and would improve people’s strength, cardio-vascular condition and

help them lose weight as well. Some people might argue that bicycles are impractical to carry stuff

however by adding baskets and racks, you would be amazed at how much you can carry. As you can see,

bicycling has many benefits on rider’s health and environment so having more people on bicycles in our

cities would be a wise decision.

Now, it’s time to learn some handy tricks to make our persuasive paragraphs better!

7 TRICKS OF PERSUASIVE WRITING

Persuasive writing is all about making someone else agree with your point of view. Trying to persuade someone to

agree with you is exactly like trying to sell a product.

You need to sound positive and certain that you’re right.

Make sure you’ve got enough good reasons to back up your opinion.

Sample Topic: The Environment

Example: Some business people believe we have no responsibility to the environment. They think it

doesn’t matter if we release poisonous gasses into the air. All they care about is making money.

TALK ABOUT “WE” and “US”

WHENEVER YOU CAN

MAKE YOUR OPPONENT’S IDEA

SOUND WEAK

Now, if your topic is “Giving weekend homework”, what is something you can say about your

opponent to make them sound weak? Write at least two sentences below.

Your example: ________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

Not very convincing: More convincing:

1. I think that cruelty to animals Surely we all agree that cruelty to animals is wrong.

is wrong.

2. Pollution is a problem that Pollution is a problem that affects us all.

Discuss: If you want someone to agree with you, it’s a good idea to make them think they have

a lot in common with you. Why?

The trick is to say the question so that there can only be one possible answer.

This kind of question is called a ‘rhetorical question’.

Example: Does anyone really want to live in a

world without clean air to breathe?

No one in their

right minds

would say “YES”

“Fossil fuels are dirty, dangerous and outdated.”

“Renewable energy is clean, safe and efficient.”

Examples:

“Child marriage is ________________ , ________________

and _______________.”

USE RHETORICAL QUESTIONS

USE “MAGIC THREES”

(THREE ADJECTIVES)

“Junk food is __________________ , __________________ and

___________________.”

If your topic was STUDENTS HAVE TOO MUCH HOMEWORK, what is one question you could

ask your readers?

If your reader doesn’t agree with you, being rude to them is not going to help.

It will just annoy them!

“Recycling is very

important. Anybody who

doesn’t recycle is stupid and

selfish.”

This will annoy

your reader and

they won’t listen.

“Recycling is very important.

It’s something every one of us

can do to help our planet.”

People will listen to

this and you might

change their minds.

Here is how you

can show why your

opponent is wrong.

We call this

REFUTATION.

KEEP YOUR WRITING POLITE

REFUTATION ( SAY WHY YOUR

OPPONENT’S VIEW IS WRONG )

For Example:

Topic: Child Marriage

Here is something you should NOT say when trying to persuade your audience:

“This tradition is so STUPID and ABSURD! The people who do this are out of their minds!”

Write in a more polite way to persuade your readers:

________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________

Topic: Schools should only cook healthy food.

Your opponent says: Your refutation can be :

1. Leave the choice to the students Some people say that students should be

left free in their choices however children

are young and can make bad choices that

can damage their health.

2. Fat, sugar, and salt are not ___________________________________

all bad. We also need them. ___________________________________

PARTS OF A PERSUASIVE PARAGRAPH

Topic: Why arranged marriage should be illegal

Can you imagine being forced to spend the rest of your life and start a family with a complete

stranger? This is what arranged marriage does. This practice should be abandoned in favor of ‘love

marriages’ so that children have time to grow up and can get married in their own time to a person that

they are in love with. First of all, because marriage is such an important commitment, people should

decide who to marry for themselves, and wait until they are adults and know what they want out of life.

Additionally, since an arranged marriage may be between two people of very different ages, the younger

person does not have the chance to grow up before being forced into a role that requires a great deal of

maturity;. marriage should be a partnership between two equals, not between an adult and a child.

Ultimately, arranged marriage is problematic because it takes away important freedoms from individuals

and allows other people to organize their adult life. When we are adults, we should be able to make

these decisions for ourselves.

Time to revise our learning now ! Read the sample persuasive paragraph below.

a) Circle the parts of the paragraph and label with different colours.

b) Discuss with a partner - Can you spot any TRICKS used to make the paragraph more persuasive?

your audience to change their minds about something really important. Now that you have had some

practice with organizing a strong persuasive paragraph, you’re ready for the big leagues—it’s time to

try a three paragraph essay! Once you have mastered this writing technique, you will be able to

* The hook consists of one (or more) sentences that make the reader want to

read your essay.

* 1 or 2 transitional sentences connecting the hook to the thesis statement.

* The thesis statement: It is a single sentence that states the main idea or

argument of the essay. It comes at the end of the introductory paragraph.

Watching television is an experience shared by most adults and children. It is cheap, appealing, and within

the reach of the general public. In this way, TV has become an important mass media around the world. Sadly, this

resource isn’t used in a way that people could get the best possible benefits from it. The purpose of this essay is to

persuade the reader that people shouldn’t watch too much television because the content of many TV programs is

not educational; it makes people waste time that could be used in more beneficial activities; and it negatively

affects people’s mental development.

The first reason why people shouldn’t watch too much television is because the content of many TV

programs is not educational. Nowadays, we can see movies, series, and shows that present scenes of violence, sex,

and drugs. This has established wrong concepts among the audience that influence them into having

a negative behavior. Moreover, the impact this tendency has on children is worse because they grow up with the

idea of a world where women must be slender and blonde to stand out, where problems can only be solved with

money and violence, and where wars are inevitable.

The second reason why people shouldn’t watch too much television is because it makes people waste time

that could be used in more beneficial activities. The time we spend watching TV could be applied to useful

activities like exercise, reading, interacting with friends and family, activities that are a crucial for a healthy

lifestyle.

The third reason why people shouldn’t watch too much television is because it negatively affects people’s

mental development. According to several scientific studies, watching TV for prolonged periods of time has a

negative effect over the intellectual development of children and leads to deterioration of the mental capacity in

older people by causing both attention and memory problems in the long term.

In conclusion, people shouldn’t watch too much television because the content of many TV programs is not

educational; it makes people waste time that could be used in more beneficial activities; and it affects people’s

mental development. However, this doesn’t mean that we should ban TV, but if we are going to watch it, we

should do it with moderation. Television is a resource that we should learn to use through the right selection of

programs by taking an active and critical attitude towards it.

3 Parts of Thesis Statement :

Topic + Your position + Main arguements you plan to explain

The thesis statement is usually a single sentence that states the main idea or argument of the essay.

It should present the topic and also make a comment about your position in relation to the topic.

It comes at the end of the introductory paragraph.

Have a look at the examples:

NOT SO GOOD - Air pollution most be stopped. (too general, nothing to debate) X

GOOD - In order to stop the alarming rise in air pollution, at least 25 % of the budget should be spent on limiting

pollution. (more specific, focused, debatable)

What do you think ? Discuss.

Eating junk food is very bad and should be avoided.

People should stop the regular consumption of fast food because it leads to serious and expensive health issues

such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease.

Thesis Statement Checklist:

It has a clear position and focus.

It gives a clue about the organization

of the essay.

It is not a fact! It’s an arguable idea!
