• Availability of skilled nurses and midwives is critical in ensuring high quality antenatal, delivery, emergency obstetric, and postnatal care services

• Attention to the training of midwives and nurses is essential to attain the Millennium Development Goal for maternal health

Shortage of nurses and midwives in African Countries– Countries train too few nurses and midwives – Appropriate competencies to deliver quality care

at all levels of the health service are needed– Inadequate provision for leadership develop in the

profession
