by means of introspective reflection and openness regarding one’s musicality 4 Course Content The course consists of six sub-courses of which one is offered each term. Each sub-course must be successfully completed before study on the following sub-course can be commenced. The content of the course is based on the needs of the individual student. During the first year of study, emphasis is placed upon technical skills; thereafter the student’s individual voice shall be developed and strengthened.

The student shall, in conjunction with the lecturer in charge, create an individual study plan per school year, wherein emphasis shall be placed upon the student’s needs and vision of his/her musical development and direction. Creative problem solving is a compulsory element of the course during the third year. This course includes instrument-related problem solving, as well as methods applicable to the resolution of physical and psychological obstacles or barriers common to all musicians and not necessarily related to one’s instrument. The course is a part of the main field of the programme, which also includes an individual project comprising 15 higher education credits. 5 Teaching and Assessment 1. Teaching consists of individual classes, individual work (exercises, preparation and a project) and group teaching. Instruction in creative problem solving takes place in group classes and lectures, as well as discussions where the point of departure originates from the students themselves. Practical exercises may also be included. 2. Examination of the course takes the form of continuous assessment and tests. The regulations, such as prerequisites for examination and grades, are given to the students at the start of the course. 3. Re-examination of the course will be available soon following the original examination and have the same requirements. If the student is awarded the grade of Fail twice he/she has the right to request a new examiner. Students are permitted no more than five examination occasions. 6 Grades 1. Students are awarded one of the following grades: Fail or Pass. 2. The grade awarded for the course in its entirety is determined following consideration to grades awarded for the individual sub-courses. 3. Students have the right to supplementary ECTS grading on request. 7 Admission Requirements To be eligible for the course requires the basic eligibility for studies at universities and university colleges in Sweden and successful entrance tests to the Bachelor of Music programme in Performance. 8 Literature Course literature is determined by the individual needs of the student. - have developed a clear artistic personality, musical focus and direction and the ability to navigate within the various musical styles encountered within the scope of improvisation

- have acquired profound insight into the interaction between theoretical and practical studies, and how to use this knowledge to further develop as a musical artist

- have acquired firm knowledge of essential repertoires within the scope of improvisation by means of autonomous in-depth research, based on his/her style preference and artistic decisions

- demonstrate responsibility for continued artistic development, and a complete mastery of factors intrinsic to this goal, such as personal drive and self-discipline

- have acquired the capacity to cultivate and nourish his/her musical inclination and curiosity by means of introspective reflection and openness regarding his/her musicality

4 Course Content The course consists of four sub-courses of which one is offered each term over the programme’s two-year period. Each sub-course must be successfully completed before study on the following sub-course can be commenced. The content of the course is based on the needs of the individual student. The course is part of the main field of study of the programme, which also includes an independent project comprising 30 higher education credits. 5 Teaching and Assessment 1. Teaching consists of individual classes, individual work (exercises, preparation and a project) and group rehearsals. Furthermore, the student shall, in consultation with the lecturer responsible for the course, create an individual study plan per academic year, wherein emphasis is placed upon the student’s needs and vision of his/her musical development and direction. 2. Examination of the course or sub-course takes the form of continuous assessment and assignments. The regulations, such as prerequisites for examination and grades, are given to students at the start of the course. 3. 4 Course Content The course consists of six sub-courses of which one is offered each term over the three-year period of the programme. Each sub-course must be successfully completed before study on the following sub-course can be commenced. During the first two years of study, emphasis is placed upon mechanical skills. Studies during the final year are more focused on how the student, using his/her chosen instrument, can act as an intermediary and communicate through music in an ensemble. The course is a part of the main field of the programme, which also includes an independent project comprising 15 higher education credits. 5 Teaching and Assessment 1. The course consists primarily of group instruction carried out in small and large ensembles. Guest lectures and workshops are regular features. 2. Examination of the course takes the form of continuous assessment, presentations and/or concerts. The regulations, such as prerequisites for examination and grades, are given to students at the start of the course. 3. Re-examination of the course will be available soon following the original examination and have the same requirements. If the student is awarded the grade of Fail twice he/she has the right to request a new examiner. Students are permitted no more than five examination occasions. 6 Grades 1. - have acquired a fundamental knowledge of different arrangement and composition techniques used for various ensemble types, configurations, and sizes

- have a general knowledge of instruments commonly used in jazz music, and insight into the principles and techniques of their instrumentation

- demonstrate fundamental knowledge of harmony/counterpoint and the structural principles of music of different genres and different eras

- have acquired the ability to analyse music using the prevailing analytical system, as well as understand and verbally explain musical forms, structures and contents

- demonstrate the ability to use chord notation in arrangements, piano playing and/or improvisation

- demonstrate the ability to create and realise original artistic thoughts and ideas, and demonstrate the drive necessary to work independently

- demonstrated the preparedness and willingness to meet the many demands placed upon a professional musician

4 Course Content The course consists of four sub-courses of which one is offered each term. Each sub-course must be successfully completed before study on the following sub-course may be commenced. During the first year, the course may include an explanation of incremental theory and chord scales. The student shall analyse compositions of varying tonalities and identify scales. The course continues by covering modern harmonic techniques for jazz composition. Throughout the course, the student is required to write compositions that illustrate the traditional and modern techniques covered by the course. During the second year, the course may include a number of subjects, such as acquiring a knowledge of instruments, different arrangement and composition techniques, assignments in analysis, as well as autonomous work. Emphasis is placed upon the student’s original work, where music’s different parameters (including, but not limited to, arrangement

techniques, composition techniques, form, melody, rhythm, harmony, phrasing, articulation, and dynamics) are illustrated and discussed on the basis of different aesthetical conditions and viewpoints. 5 Teaching and Assessment 1. Teaching consists of individual classes, group classes, lectures/seminars, performances and individual work. 2. Examination of the course or sub-course takes the form of continuous assessment and submitted assignments in the form of written exercises, arrangements and compositions as well as recordings. Examination regulations and a description of the grading system are given to the students at the start of the course. 3. Re-examination of the course will be available soon following the original examination and have the same requirements. If the student is awarded the grade of Fail twice he/she has the right to request a new examiner. Students are permitted no more than five examination occasions. 6 Grades 1. The course consists of four sub-courses of which one is offered each term. Methods of teaching include group instruction, both theoretical and practical, in the form of ensemble playing, lectures, as well as individual work (exercises, preparations, assignments). The course is generally offered during the first and third years of study. 2. Examination of the course takes the form of continuous assessment, assignments and tests. 4 Course Content Optional components are available during the second and third years of this three-year course. The course may include presentations, individual work, guest lectures, field trips and seminars. The optional components are intended to provide the student with fundamental knowledge and skills in those areas that the student deems vital to his/her education and that he/she may not receive in the compulsory courses 5 Teaching and Assessment 1. Teaching consists of projects, individual work and lectures. The lecturer and the student jointly plan optional elements of the course in consultation with the programme director. 2. Examination of the course or sub-course takes the form of presentations and continuous assessment. 4 Course Content The course consists of four sub-courses of which one is offered each term. The course also includes an optional segment aimed to give the student fundamental knowledge and skills in subjects considered vital to the student’s educational profile and his/her execution of projects. Examples of such optional courses include: arrangement, in-depth studies, composition, and counterpoint. 5 Teaching and Assessment 1. Teaching takes place in project form, individual work, lectures and guest lectures. The optional segment of the course is decided upon by the student and lecturer in consultation with the programme director. 2. 4 Course Content The course consists of six sub-courses of which one is offered each term. Each sub-course must be successfully completed before study on the following sub-course may be commenced. The content of the course is decided on by the student and lecturer in consultation with the programme management. The course is a part of the main field of the programme, which also includes an independent project comprising 15 higher education credits. 5 Teaching and Assessment 1. Teaching consists of individual classes and work (exercises, preparations and a project), which can also occur in group form (during e.g. rehearsals). Furthermore, the student shall create an individual study plan per academic year in conjunction with the lecturer in charge, wherein emphasis shall be placed upon the student’s needs and individual vision concerning his/her musical development and direction. 2. Examination of the course takes the form of continuous assessment and tests/assignments. The regulations, such as prerequisites for examination and grades, are given to the students at the start of the course. 3. Re-examination of the course will be available soon following the original examination and have the same requirements. If the student is awarded the grade of Fail twice he/she has the right to request a new examiner. Students are permitted no more than five examination occasions. 6 Grades 1. Students are awarded one of the following grades: Fail or Pass. 2. 4 Course Content The course consists of six sub-courses of which one is offered each term. Each sub-course must be successfully completed before study on the following sub-course may be commenced. The course may include sections on traditional chord accompaniment instruments, e.g. guitar and piano. Here the use of chord notation is emphasised, but the use of sheet music may also occur. 5 Teaching and Assessment 1. Teaching occurs in individual or group form. 2. Examination of the course or sub-course takes the form of continuous assessment and tests/assignments. 4 Course Content The course consists of four sub-courses of which one is offered each term. Each sub-course must be successfully completed before study on the following sub-course may be commenced. The course covers composition and arrangement, and discusses various ways of arranging and orchestrating world and folk music. The course comprises different topics such as knowledge of instruments, different arrangement and composition techniques, assignments in analysis, as well as autonomous work. Emphasis is placed upon the student’s original work, where music’s different parameters (including, but not limited to, arrangement techniques, composition techniques, form, melody, rhythm, harmony, phrasing, articulation, and dynamics) are illustrated and discussed on the basis of different aesthetical conditions and viewpoints. 5 Teaching and Assessment 1. Teaching consists of individual classes, group classes, seminars, and individual work. 2. Examination of the course takes the form of continuous assessment and submitted assignments.
