The mall was originally sched- uled to open at 7:00 but due to tech- nical issues and safety regulations – identified by the City Council’s In- spection it opened hours later. City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Servic- es spokesman Theo Layne says: “There were certain fire specifica- tions that had not been met. They were sup- posed to open at 7:00 but we kept the mall closed to make sure everything was in order.” Mall management then made sure this was sorted. Layne added that things like signage still need to be rectified, like where emergency exits and water supplies were, in case of a fire. They have given man- agement till next week to fix these. The mall’s manage- ment apologised for the delay in a media state- ment later in the day, and thanked shoppers for their patience during the inspection. David Samiels and his wife Joy drove from Malmesbury at 4:00 on Thursday to take advantage of the mall’s opening specials. They were disappointed when, af- ter a three-hour wait, the mall had still not opened. At around 10:00 the couple gave up and returned home. “I am extremely upset because we were looking forward to the spe- cials and to see how the mall looks,” says David. His wife Joy looked for- ward to the opening but was more interested in the clothing stores. Like David and Joy, many people returned home before the mall opened but others waited patiently. “I will not leave because I don’t have taxi fare to drive up and down again. I know they will open today, I have faith in them,” said Lotus River student, Ruwayda Adams. Patricia Dyers, from Retreat, who took the day off from work to be at the opening with her son, Austin, says she is impressed with the new mall. “Despite the glitch this morning, I think the place is fantastic. It was a long wait, but worth it. It is a mas- sive change from the old mall.” Centre Manager, Wendy Redford, says they are thrilled with the re- sponse they are getting despite the initial delay. “It is wonderful to see the re- sponse after four phases and two years of construction. Regarding the delay this morning, it is a brand new building, with new systems and the City had to do the final in- spection to insure the safety of all our customers.” The mall’s bright lights and unique design, offers retail therapy from 9:00 till 19:00 on weekdays, 9:00 till 17:00 on Saturdays and 9:00 till 15:00 on Sundays and public holi- days. SHOPPING HEAVEN: When the doors eventually opened, shoppers were mesmerised by the new stores in Blue Route Mall. JAZZ IT UP: Lauryn Hill set the stage alight at the Cape Town Jazz Festival at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Dear reader,

Thank you for your warm response tomy column.

The first thing you’ll notice this weekis that I have a different picture in my“ConnectED” logo; and you’ll wonderwhy. I can explain.

I’ve learnt fast that when you’re in thepublic eye, albeit as abyline or picture credit, feedback and criticismbecome your second andthird names. You learn to“roll with the punches”,“hit the ground running”and, when warranted,“give as good as you get”.

The strategy, though, should be to extract val-ue from the many noises(often well-meaning) be-ing made, and not to takeeverything personally;easier said than done.

The lesson I learnt from using an“arty” picture is that interpretation issubjective and that often consensus isyour best guide. I still have my ownviews, though, about the perfect picture, based on my negative self-perceptionthat I am not photogenic. In fact, I oftentell people that I look better in person.

That said, having listened well to feed-back from key colleagues, including myboss, and a contact (once a friend) whoreckons I look “worried” in last week’sphoto, I’ve changed my picture.

I may yet change it again...On to more entertaining topics: name-

ly the Cape Town International Jazz Fes-tival, which brought the city to life thisweekend and saw local and internationalacts sharing the stage.

My first time at this, the 13th annual

festival, was made more magical by my“tour guide” and esteemed Media24 col-league, Niel le Roux, who showed me theropes at the festival, taking me to, amongothers, a “jazz rave” outside the CullinanHotel. Niel is a hard act to follow and aswe traipsed around the Cape Town Inter-national Convention Centre, I waspleased I had worn comfortable high

heels – although a dress thatwas deliberately a bit toolong nearly saw me tumblingdown escalators.

I don’t favour crowds andI’m known to walk out of fullsupermarkets despite my“must” shopping list, butconsidering the magnitude ofthe festival and attendance, Idid not feel claustrophobic oruncomfortable while stand-ing shoulder-to-shoulderwith thousands of well-heeled strangers – until somemoron had the audacity to

touch my backside and disappear in aflash before I could turn my rage on him/her. That didn’t ruin my experience, though, nor dilute my appreciation ofCape Town as a truly world class city weare privileged to be citizens of.

We have proven our ability to unite, becreative and work together towards acommon goal. Admittedly, we have ourflaws, like any society, but the countlesspositives and good outweigh the short-comings. I wish you all a blessed and safeEaster. If you’re planning a road trip, please take your vehicle for safety checksbeforehand.

Till next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column, by

Metrorail backtracks on initial price hikeLILLIAN AMOS

SINCE Sunday, Metrorail pas-sengers have been forking out13% more for their tickets. Theinitial price hike was set at 27%when Metrorail announced it afew weeks ago.

The parastatal then had achange of heart after criticismfrom Cosatu, the national trans-port department and the businesscommunity, amongst others.

The rail service is adamant thatthe price hike was inevitable andnecessary due to increasing ener-gy costs, maintenance material, salaries of employees as well asrates and taxes for stations.

“Our current funding pot con-sisting of government subsidy al-lotment and fare box, does not cov-er operational cost”.

According to Metrorail regionalmanager Mthuthuzeli Swartz, commuters most affected by thehike are those who buy weekly

and single tickets.“Monthly ticket buyers will get

a reprieve, for three months,through a 15 percent discount.”

He also assured commuters thatthe decision to raise fares was tak-en with “full cognizance of the factthat rail transports the majority ofpublic transport users.”

Metrorail has also suffered atthe hands of vandals. Since Janu-ary this year 18 train coaches havebeen torched, costing the par-astatal R24 million.

Cosatu’s provincial secretary,Tony Ehrenreich, welcomed therevised price hike.

“It is a great achievement tohave been able to get the percent-age from 27 to 13 percent.

“We welcome any measures thatassist commuters and we as Co-satu will encourage commuters tomake use of the measures.”

Meanwhile, the Cape Chamberof Commerce and Industry wel-comed the concession made byMetrorail saying business was

particularly happy with the re-vised fares. Gordon Metter, Depu-ty President of the Chamber says:“We welcome the revised pricingstructure and believe it to be ofgreat benefit to workers and em-ployers alike.”

Metter however tempered thegoodnewsbyremindingMetrorailthat business was deeply con-cerned about the reliability of theservice and called on labour, busi-ness and Metrorail to join forces tofind a solution.

Celebration of Cape Town arts and cultureTHE Cape Town Festival, thecity’s premier arts and culturefestival, has thrilled audiencesover the past 12 years and the2012 event will be no different.

As a result of a congested calen-dar in the first half of the year, the13th instalment of the Cape TownFestival will move to a later dateon the city’s event calendar and isexpected to take place at the GoodHope Centre in July 2012.

This will support initiatives by

the city’s tourism organisationsto promote major winter events inan attempt to make Cape Town anall-year-round destination.

In keeping with the theme of“Celebrating Cape Town”, the fes-tival, to be held in winter for thefirst time since its inception, willonce again recognize the depth ofCape Town’s diverse cultural her-itage.

The two-day cultural feast willfeature the cream of Cape Town’stalent, reflecting the full spectrum

of musical genres that appeals toa cross-section of the city’s popu-lation.

An exciting youth-focused Hip-Hop Indaba, providing a platformfor cultural expression throughgraffiti, the spoken word and vari-ous other art forms, will be includ-ed in the programme.

Whether it’s koesisters, kofta orkonfyt, festival-goers will experi-ence an authentic culinary jour-ney of the Cape at the “KaapseKombuis”, where locals can enjoy

local fare that is unique to CapeTown’s diverse communities.

“The Cape Town Festival con-tinues to evolve and we remaincommitted to presenting a festivalthat brings communities togeth-er.

“This year’s event will be a cele-bration of everything that makesCape Town great and through thisevent, we intend to acknowledgetheachievements and successes ofour city, ” says Cape Town Festi-val Founder and Chairman, Ry-

land Fisher.The inaugural “Celebrating

Cape Town Awards” will belaunched at the 2012 Cape TownFestival at the Good Hope Centreand accolades will be presented toindividuals, who through theirachievements have become trueambassadors of this great city.

Be safe on the roads this EasterFree roadworthy safety checks this Easterwill be provided by the City of Cape Town’sTraffic Services. It is called “Operation Exo-dus”.

The operation started on Friday and willrun until Monday 9 April, to monitor all vehi-cles leaving Cape Town’s public transport in-terchanges.

Traffic Officers will be dispatched to publictransport interchanges, focusing on Joe Gqa-bi, Mfuleni, Cape Town Station and Bellville,so that they can patrol the areas and preventillegal ranking. Officers will test every vehiclethat leaves Cape Town’s public transport in-terchanges for vehicle fitness. Any vehiclethat is not declared roadworthy will be sus-pended and prohibited from travelling fur-ther. Officers will also check that all driverand vehicle documentation is in order, priorto the vehicle’s departure. Spokesperson forTraffic Services, Chief Inspector Merle Lou-rens, says a record will be kept of all publictransport vehicles leaving public transport in-terchanges and this information will beshared with other departments and key role-players. “Such information-sharing is crucial

because it allows traffic services to keep arecord of the trip schedule and any road-worthy checks that have already been per-formed.

As part of the operation, officers will screenvehicle loads, especially those of trailers. Anyvehicle suspectedof over-loadingwill be takento the nearest weighbridge and goods will beoff-loaded if necessary,” says Lourens.

The period from 2 to 5 April has been identi-fied as the busiest at these public transport in-terchanges and traffic services is therefore of-fering free vehicle roadworthy safety checksas part of the operation. Motorists can visitone of the following roadworthy testing cen-tres to ensure that their motor vehicle is ina roadworthy condition. The centres will beopen from 09:00 to 14:00 Monday to Thursday.

IFYOUareoneof thosepeoplewhocollect5 cent coins in a jar, you should know thatthe coins are now officially off the produc-tion line.

Government announced in Novemberlast year that the coins would be discon-tinued on Sunday (1 April).

The existing ten cent coin will also seesome changes.

It will be the same size, but the metalcontent will change from bronze-platedsteel to copper-plated steel, making itcheaper to produce.

But don’t panic, the mint will still re-main a legal tender and will still be circu-lated, which means that shops and banksare still obliged to continue to accept the5c coins.

The mint will join the one and two centcoins which was was discontinued tenyears ago. The result was that all cashtransactions were rounded off to the near-est five cent. Ina Wilken, a renowned con-

sumer activist and member of the SouthAfrican National Consumer Forum saysthe coin will then automatically bephased out as time progresses. “I am notsure what the rationale was behind thisdecision – it might be very costly to pro-duce 5c coins and a 5c coin cannot buymuch.”

Regarding the 10 cent coin, Wilken con-firmed that the design will not change atall and the size will also remain the same.

“This will also come into effect on Sun-day 1 April but the old coins will definite-ly still be in use.”

Tanya Helling, who collects 5 cent coinswas surprised when she heard about the5 cent not being produced any more.

“I just started keeping the 5 cents’ be-cause everyone was throwing them awaybecause they couldn’t buy anything withit. I was just planning to take them to ashop one day and exchange them, so I amglad shops are still accepting them. Itwould have been a total heart break ifthey didn’t”.

From Russia with loveSTEFNI HERBERT

THEY’VE been partners for lessthan a year and already havetrekked to a foreign country.Kelsey Fransman (14) and GarthRoss (14) are back from Russiawhere they recently competed inthe World Dance Sport Federa-tion’s Junior Two BallroomDancing competition.

In the short space of time theyhave danced together, the pair wonall the important competitions thatlead them to compete for theirSouth African colours, which theywon as well.

Fransman, who is from Craw-ford, attends Belgravia High Schooland is in grade nine, while her part-ner Ross lives in Grassy Park andis in grade eight at Bergvliet HighSchool.

After winning on a national level, they were one of two couples chosento compete in Russia, but due to un-foreseen circumstances, the othercouple withdrew from the competi-tion, leaving Fransman and Rossthe only couple from the WesternCape in the competition.

“We had a great time over there, but we’re really happy about beinghome. Russian people aren’t thatfriendly and it wasn’t easy to com-municate because the majoritydon’t speak a word of English,” saysRoss.

The competition worked in sucha way that the couple danced in“heat stages”, and after a certainnumber of heats they were elimi-nated.

Fransman’s mother, Zelna, says,“The competition is so strong,South Africa is a thousand years be-hind. We didn’t place very well, butI think that it is a good learning ex-

perience for Kelsey and Garth sothat they know what kind of levelthey would be competing at if theywere to compete on an internation-al level again.”

The couple take dancing lessonsat the Afton School of Dancing inWynberg and they have a privatecoach as well.

Unfortunately, because of finan-cial difficulties, their coach couldnot accompany them to Moscow.

Ross’ mother, Janie, says, “It wasreally sad thattheir coachcouldn’t go alongbecause they re-ally needed theguidance. Eventhough Zelnaand I went withour children, wedon’t know howto coach ball-room dancers.

We could havebeen doing moreharm than goodin trying tocoach them.”

Fransman wasintroduced todancing in 2007when her moth-er took her to seea competi-tion.Her motherthen told herthat it would becompletely up toher if she wantedto take up thesport.

Ross starteddancing becausehis older sisters,Sade (23) andMaghan (16),used to take part

in the sport.“Sade doesn’t take part in danc-

ing anymore because she’s focusingon her studies and Maghan is look-ing for a pre-champ partner suita-ble for her height,” says Ross.

The pair says that even thoughthe sport can be expensive, theylove what they do and they like thatit brings opportunities for travel.

“It is also a good way to occupyour time and keep us off the street,”they concluded.

YourSMSesExperience vs age

. I am in my mid-fiftiesand have been struggling tofind a job for the past threeyears. I share “Desperate’s”sentiments (Your SMSes,People’s Post, 27 March). Arethere any companies thatare able to assist in tempo-rary or contract work for“senior teenagers”? Ourcountry needs experiencedpeople. We are reliable, wedon’t have boyfriends, girl-friends or baby problems. We are highly committed, but because of our age weare overlooked. Please help.Desperate 2

. “Desperate”, I can re-late to your SMS. If you areover 40 you can forget aboutfinding employment unlessyou know people in highplaces. I matriculated at 41and spent money on compu-ter courses to empower my-self. Three years down theline I still don’t have a job.Shihaam Wilkinson

Commuter complaints. First class coaches are

empty and third class coach-es are full. Ticket collectorsare rude and dishonest. Theconstant apologies aboutlate trains continue andnow there are plans for aprice hike. They make thetaxi industry look good. From a fed-up latecomer

. I totally agree with thepeople complaining aboutMetroFail – they sure don’t

discriminate.Theydeliver arubbish service to every-one. There’s no security!

In response. Tony Robinson displays

a real battery chicken men-tality in his random viewsdisparaging global warm-ing. Just because he can’tsee it doesn’t mean it’s notreal. Do some real researchsir, and you will see why96% of scientists accept theevidence. And don’t thinkpainting roofs white is ananswer – we need to changethe way we recklessly emitcarbon and waste energy atthe same time. Put your col-umn to good use to questionwhy we don’t all have solarwater-heaters, for example!Peter Johnston

Taxi troubles. Get your facts in order,

Mr Loonat. If you don’t un-derstandhow itworks in thetaxi industry, keep quiet. From a proud permit holder

. Mr Loonat, please don’tinterfere with taxi business. You need to focus on the cur-rent crime in the communi-ty. Leave our livelihoodalone. Stop listening to op-portunists and parasitesand stick to your portfolio.

. I want to remind youthat we as taxi owners havebuilt up these businessesand routes over 120 years al-

ready.We have given blood,

sweat and tears building upthis industry to where it istoday. We have been doingthis without a governmentsubsidy and are currentlytransporting 70% of the pop-ulation, daily. We are incompetition against GoldenArrow that enjoys over R700million per annum, so justimagine if the taxi industrygot that subsidy – we wouldhave given a much betterservice. We could ask ourcustomers if they wantchicken or beef! The newdrivers must not capitaliseon our bread and butter aswe also provide an incometo the drivers, sliding-dooroperators and the rank mar-shals. The Taxi Board is cor-rect in not supplying newpermits on the oversaturat-ed routes, and for those whocame in the taxi industryyesterday, you have nochance to steal our businessfrom us. From the loyal taxiindustry of Mitchell’s Plain

Health project needs support by allI WISH to applaud the Minister of Health,Aaron Motsoaledi, for taking the brave stepof rolling out the NHI pilot project to 10 ofthe most unserved areas of our country inhealthcare delivery.

Extending healthcare to 10 million peoplewho have been denied access to healthcareneeds the entire country’s support. In thepast, far too much emphasis has beenplaced on addressing the needs of people inurban areas, while rural areas were com-pletely neglected. This has caused millionsof rural dwellers an immense amount ofmisery and hardship. Many of them havebeen forced to travel with very meagre re-sources to seek health services in far-awayclinics only to be turned away because ofthe overwhelming numbers seeking help inthese facilities.

The task of running clinics on a smallbudget is by no means an easy one for the

Minister. There are many who are opposedto his radical views and who would like tosee his NHI plan fail, but that must not de-tract him from doing what is right and thatis to deliver healthcare to all.

He is the only person so far to express hisintention to talk to GPs to assist the stateservices. All other senior people headingthe NHI project have ignored the role of theGP as the primary healthcare provider torun the NHI. Experiences in the rest of theworld have shown that GPs are the back-bone of successful NHIs or NHSs. This posi-tive attitude by the Minister towards doc-tors will encourage many of them to remainin this country if there are opportunities forthem to work with or alongside the state. As a nation we must stop looking for faultsand start looking for solutions.DR E V RAPITIMitchells Plain

A tribute to my dadMY dad, Ronald Desmond Miser-oole passed away on Thursday 15March at Victoria hospital inWynberg and believe me, it wasan extraordinary passing for me,because I was there.

I got to the hospital and toldhim I was taking him home. Hetold me that it did not matterwhere I took him, he was readyto go.

My heart was in pieces but I

knew that he made his peace andI had to let him go. Hard as thatwas, he passed away in the wheel-chair whilst I was opening thedoor and as much as it is littlecomfort to me now, I know he isin a better place and that he iswatching over us.

Let me give you a little back-ground about my dad and maybeyou will understand the impor-tance of this article. He was diag-

nosed with lung cancer about twoyears ago and I might have thedates wrong but for the last threemonths he was bedridden andthose three months were the bestI ever had.

My dad lived for his family, ma-terial things were never impor-tant to him. He showered us withlove, taught us to respect otherpeople and their religion, hetaught us to forgive, to live in har-mony with each other.

He left us this legacy and it willbe up to us now to carry on withit and pass it on to our children.

I would visit him and he wouldtell me that he was fine and wouldwave when I left. It broke myheart to see him suffer but hisspirit made up for the pain. Mydad hardly ever complained, hewould rather ask you visiting

him how you are doing. He wasthe most intelligent person Iknow and very encouraging butalso a very private person and I’mpretty sure he wouldn`t havewanted me to send this letter buthe would also have secretly beenvery proud of me.

He had a very different rela-tionship with each of his childrenbut he loved us all the same.

I miss his teasing smile, thelong talks we had about currentaffairs and his waving hand.

He might be gone but he willnever be forgotten. I also want tosalute my mom for being at hisside during this very trying time, she honoured her marriage vowto the end.

God bless her.TANYA MISEROOLEGrassy Park

Jeremy will bepushing himself inhis wheelchair for21km and Andrea willbe pushing 10-year-old son Alex in hiswheelchair for 56km.

Jeremy Hazell andTeam Boettger wereinitially turned downby Old Mutual TwoOceans. However, af-ter pressure from theChaeli Champaign,Alex Boettger Trus-tees and swift actionfrom City of Cape Ex-ecutive Mayor Alder-man Ian Neilson andAmanda Brinkman, disabled athleteswere given the greenlight.

Jeremy has been ina wheelchair for 14years after he wasparalysed in a climbing accident on Ta-ble Mountain when he was 46. Over theyears he has learnt that embracing op-portunities and living a full life are es-sential to inner peace. Doing the TwoOceans is a physical and mental chal-lenge, and with your support, this chal-lenge will benefit disabled people lessfortunate than myself.

Jeremy will be raising funds forSenecio, which is a team of dedicatedoccupational and physiotherapistswho work with many children with se-vere disabilities.

Alex Boettger lives with his motherAndrea and brother Dylan in Sunval-ley. The Alex Boettger Trust was set up

by triathlete friends Marc du Rooy andAli Bell-Leask in 2011. The trusteeswant Alex’s voice to be heard becausealthough Alex’s body is weak his mindis not.

The trustee’s goal this year is to raiseenough money to buy a new car as And-rea, Dylon, service dog Falkor, thewheelchair and Alex battle to fit intoa Golf which is not very reliable! And-rea will be pushing Alex 56 km to raisefunds for a car.

A MAN with a missionwhen it comes to the col-lection of cans. Thiswould best describe Ro-drick Resandt, regionalManager of Collect-a-Canin the Western Cape.

Resandt, who lives inOttery, has been part ofthe Collect-a-Can familyfor the past 17 years, join-ing a mere two years af-ter the company was es-tablished.

Prior to joining Col-lect-a-Can, he spent 18years in the retail indus-try. He recalls, “Chang-ing industries neededquite a paradigm shift; itwas totally differentfrom what I had becomeaccustomed to, but it wasa welcome change.”

For quite some timeResandt had been look-ing for ways to make adifference in others’lives. When the opportu-nity at Collect-a-Cancrossed his path he knew that hehad to grab it with both hands.Through Collect-a-Can’s philoso-phy of empowering those that areless fortunate and providing job op-portunities for budding entrepre-neurs, he knew that he would beable to make a difference and addvalue to other people’s lives.

His passion for what he does isclear, “I love going to bed at nightin the knowledge that someone isable to put bread on the table withthe money they earned from collect-ing cans.”

As a manager and a natural prob-lem solver at heart, he enjoys a chal-lenge and makes it his mission toseek out and tackle new projects. For Resandt, being successfulmeans understanding the clients’needs and providing excellent cus-tomer service; this is paramountand non-negotiable at his branch.

Building and fostering relation-ships is another key contributor tohis success at the branch. This is ev-ident as the metal dealers in theWestern Cape contribute almost40% of the total annual declarationsfor the group. No mean feat for thisWestern Cape operation. Resandthas been instrumental in forming

alliances with the City of CapeTown and key stakeholders of theprovince.

Anotherproject thathe is justifia-bly proud of is Collect-a-Can’s workwith theRecyclingOil Saves theEn-vironment (ROSE) Foundation. To-gether they faced the challenge ofrecovering oil and oil cans; throughCollect-a-Can’s infrastructure Re-sandt found a suitable win-win so-lution for the ROSE Foundation torecover oil, and for Collect-a-Can torecycle the oil cans.

After a six month pilot phase, these methods were rolled out at theother branches. With his roots en-trenched in traditional home val-ues and a heritage that he is excep-tionally proud of, Resandt’s appre-ciation for nature and naturalsurroundings, and more important-ly, the preservation thereof, is veryclosely aligned to his daily missionof recycling, creating job opportu-nities and keeping waste off ourlandfills.

Cycle tour will bringgood news your way

LIAM MOSES

THE southern peninsula is setto receive a wave of good newsin June this year, when the Fu-ture Factory People’s Post GoodNews Cycle Tour travelsthrough the area.

The tour will see Anne Siroky, former South African volleyballplayer, and as many as 10 otherpeople, cycling hundreds of kilo-metres through the southernmetropole of Cape Town and stop-ping in several impoverished are-as to highlight the positiveswhich have occurred amongst allof the negatives.

According to Siroky, her rea-son for drawing attention to thegood things which have occurredin these areas is to try to inspireother people in similar situationsto do the same.

“So if we stop, for example, inOcean View, we don’t want to con-centrate on the bad things thathappen in the place,” said Siroky.

“I think if we start talking topeople about the greatness that ishappening in their area, they willactually realise that they can take

their area back. And the gang-sters and drug lords don’t haveto continue ripping our childrenapart.

“There are people who want tochange their lives, so why can’tthe cycle tour focus on that for achange?”

The tour is being run by FutureFactory, a non-profit organisa-tion started by Siroky in 2001 af-ter she retired from volleyball.

Siroky played both indoor andbeach volleyball during her ca-reer and since her retirement shehas run sport-related communityorientated projects around CapeTown. She was named as the Sho-prite Checkers SABC2 Woman ofthe Year for Sport in 2007, was theWestern Cape winner of the OldMutual Sowetan SABC Commu-nity Builder of the Year awardthat same year, and is also a recip-ient of the Imvusa Foundation’sCommunity Spirit Award.

Siroky came up with the GoodNews Cycle Tour as a way to cele-brate the tenth anniversary of theformation of the Future Factory.

Apart from spreading goodnews, the tour will also aim toraise R1 000 for every one of the

1 600 kilometres that will be cov-ered.The fundswill beused for fu-ture projects for the organisationand possibly to help the areas thetour will pass through.

“We might want to return toOcean View, for example, andtake some equipment to those are-as. Like we know there are someof those schools who play VolleyBall,” said Siroky.

“And also to go and look at theneeds; maybe R1 000 can sort outsomeone’s needs in that area.”

Th Future Factory People’s PostGood News Cycle Tour will startat the College of Cape Town Wyn-berg Campus on Friday 1 Juneand wind its way through thesouthern peninsula before settingoff for Worcester and returning toCape Town.

Siroky added that the CycleTour would be the last majorproject she coordinated with theFuture Factory before embarkingon a new business venture.

Her new business will help tofund further projects for the Fu-ture Factory. To make a donationto the Future Factory People’sPost Good News Cycle Tour, con-tact Siroky on 072 916 3331.

Old Mutual triumphsLIAM MOSES

THE last day of the eleventh annual Ken-sington AFC Youth Cup went right

down to the wire on Sunday as penaltieswere required to find champions in boththe plate and winner’s sections of the Un-der 15 tournament.

The Youth Cup features both an U11 and aU15 competition and started on Friday withthe 16 teams from each age group divided infour groups of four.

The top two finishers in each group ad-vanced to thewinner’s quarterfinals, while thebottom third and fourth placed teams ad-vanced to the plate quarter finals.

In the plate section Gugulethu side ShiningStars won their shoot-out against Mitchell’sPlain team Mr Price Parkhust Academy 2-0 inthe final, while Pinelands-based Old MutualAcademy beat Lucky Stars, also of Gugulethu,4-3 in the winner’s section final.

Roger Links, head of youth development atOld Mutual, said that he was happy with thevictory but admitted that his team were capa-ble of playing better football.

“It’s a final; it’s not what we expect it to bebecause the kids are very tired at this stage. So the quality of the football wasn’t up to whatit’s supposed to be,” said Links.

“I think, all in all, we are happy that we won. It’s always good for the academy to be seen tobe winning. Success always breeds success.”

Shining Stars qualified for the final after

beating Everton United in the quarter-finalsand Vasco da Gama in the semis, whileParkhurst knocked out Norway Park andGeorge United to claim a spot. Lucky Starsmade their way to the final by first beating thetournament hosts and then knocking out FireFighters, and eventual champions Old Mutualfirst beat CPUT in the quarters and then Ajaxin the semis.

According to Links, his team played theirbest football in the knockout stages of the com-petition.

“Our semi-final against Ajax was probablyour best match. I think, football wise, that wasthe best match of our tournament,” said Links.

“We started off very slowly, and I think wegot better as the tournament went on.

“On the last day I think we played our bestfootball.

Friday and Saturday were very mediocre butwe got better.”

In the Under 11 competition, the final of theplate section ended in a 2-1 victory by CPUTover Norway Parks, while the Old Mutual U11salso claimed the winner’s trophy after defeat-ing Fire Fighters 1-0.

The tournament was held at the Royal Roadsportsfields in Maitland.
